- 1. Computer
- A Computer is a device for transforming boring clerical operations into
- boring manual operations.

- 2. Program
- A sequence of instructions telling the computer how to loop and then halt
- unexpectedly.

- 3. System
- A collection of mutually incompatible programs.

- 4. Compiler
- A program that translates errors into machine code.

- 5. Parameter
- A device for introducing an element of uncertainity into logical process.

- 6. Debugging
- The process of replacing one error with another.

- 7. Working Program
- Program from which all minor errors have been removed.

- 8. Enhancement
- A means of introducing errors into a working program.

- 9. Validation Program
- A means of ensuring that incorrect values are placed in the right format.

- 10. Sort
- Program that allows you to hold randomly accessed files serially.

- 11. Operator
- Person employed to slow down the computer to a manageable speed.

- 12. Security Dump
- Something you didn't have time to do because of all the disk crashes.

- 13. Flowchart
- Historical representation of logical errors.

- 14. Implementation
- Name given to the process of re-writing systems in a hurry.

- 15. Turnaround
- The delay between submitting your input to the computer and receiving
- back their remains.

- 16. Test Data
- A means of ensuring that the errors will occour in the correct sequence
- when a program is run live.

- 17. System Evaluation
- The process of assertaining just what went wrong so that next time you'll
- know what has happened and can apportion the blame.

- 18. Warranty.
- The thing that runs out the day before the system dies.

- 19. Product support
- A department which talks the customer into believing that
- the fault is minor and will be rectified within the hour.

- 20. Mean Time Between Failre
- A number which is calculated to make the system look reliable.

- 21. Mean Time To Repair
- Another number which does not include the time taken to obtain
- that one little part from the obscure Taiwanese manufacturer.

- 22. Availability
- Yet another number, calculated from the above two, which gives you a
- good idea what percentage of the time the system will be operational
- .... this may be quoted as a double figure, 10% !!!

- 23. Pilot installation.
- The best way to lose an order.

- 24. Pre-production model
- The one made before the major problems were cured,
- .... usually the one that you have installed in your premises.

- 25. Upgrade.
- A method by which new faults can be installed into mature products.

- 26. On-site maintenance
- NO WAY DO WE WANT THAT THING BACK IN HERE!!

- 27. Mature product.
- A product with bugs that even the best of us can't find,
- .... but the customer always does.

- 28. THEORY is when you understand completely how your computer system
- should work (but it doesn't)

- 29. PRACTICE is when your computer works (but you don't know why)
- The best combination, of course, is a mixture of THEORY and PRACTICE:
- (your computer doesn't work, and still you don't know why) .......

- A Guru is someone who communicates with Unix .......
- ..... as if it were an operating system .....
