  30. 1) INTRODUCTION

  33.   Xenakis is an 8/16 bit capable sample sequencer/player (ie a tracker). In
  34.   order to take advantage of the 16 bit facilities you will require a 16 bit
  35.   sound card such as the ESP Minnie Audio Card, that uses Acorn's new
  36.   sound DMA software.
  37.   
  38.   This release (Version 1.00ß, release 1) is a free-to-use (see copyright
  39.   file) demo version.

  41. 1.1) Minimum Requirements
  42.  
  43.   This software has been tested on a RiscPC600 and cannot be guaranteed
  44.   to operate correctly on any system with a lower specification. In practice
  45.   it should be reasonably effective on any machine with an ARM3 or better,
  46.   although 4Mb of RAM is probably a sensible minimum.

  48. 1.2) Installation
  49.  
  50.   Read the file README in the disk1 archive for installation details.
  51.   !SparkFS or !SparkPlug will be required to de-archive.

  54. 1.2.1) GETTING THE 16 BIT DEMO SONG LOADED AND PLAYING
  55.  
  56.   As a demonstration of the quality of the 16 bit audio, a 16 bit song is
  57.   supplied in the demo. This song requires 1.7Mb free in Xenakis - that 
  58.   means that you should allow at least 2.1Mb in the NEXT slot before
  59.   loading Xenakis - the program occupies about 400Kb. This also means
  60.   that you require a 16 bit sound card that uses Acorn's new Sound DMA
  61.   software.
  62.   
  63.     Step-by-step:
  64.      
  65.     i)   Ensure you have read and understood the above paragraph, and
  66.          also successfully installed Xenakis from the archive.
  67.     
  68.     ii)  Enter Xenakis by clicking the left mouse button on the icon
  69.          after loading.
  70.     
  71.     iii) Click on the arrow icon facing the song motif in the 'Disc' 
  72.          section of the display. Select the song 'f2' by clicking 
  73.          over it. The song 'f2' should now be highlighted.

  75.     iv)  Click the green tick in the top left of the display.
  76.          The song should now load.
  77.     
  78.     v)   Click the right hand button of the mouse over the play icon.
  79.          The song should now play from the start.

  81.     vi)  To stop the song, click the stop icon.

  83.     vii) To quit back to the desktop, ensure that the song is stopped,
  84.          then click the eject icon with the left hand mouse button.

  87. 1.3) Features and Further Development
  88.  
  89.   This version of Xenakis includes the following features:
  90.     
  91.     • 8 bit and 16 bit sound supported. Output in 16 bits is at 41400Hz (CD
  92.       quality.)
  93.     • Four, eight or sixteen (16 bit only) voice modes.
  94.     • Backwardly compatible to the (old) !Coconizer file format. As the
  95.       !Coconizer format is due to change in the next release, future versions
  96.       of Xenakis may use their own file format.
  97.     • Eight minute (1.8 Meg) 16 bit (F2) and 2½ minute 8 bit
  98.       (Junglistic Stylee) demo tracks.
  99.     • Demosnstrations of new effects.
  100.     • Pattern display during playback including VU meters and sequence
  101.       display.
  102.     • Sample display to facilitate placing of loop points, including zoom in
  103.       and out features.

  105.   Features under development:
  106.   
  107.     • Sample editing features - including cut, paste, mix, amplify, etc.
  108.     • Extended effects.
  109.     • Playback of song from desktop.

  111.   The sample location function had been disabled in this demo version. This
  112.   means that songs may only be written using the samples provided with
  113.   the software in the demo track.

  117. 2) USING XENAKIS
  118.

  120. Note: The following instructions are not to be considered a manual for 
  121. Xenakis - they are an outline of the main operations of the software only.
  122.  
  123. 2.1) Modes of Operation
  124.  
  125.   Xenakis is operated in several modes, the most important of which are
  126.   COMMAND, EDIT and PLAY. Many functions of Xenakis are only accessible
  127.   from particular modes, although these restrictions are minimised as
  128.   much as possible.
  129.   The mode of operation of Xenakis is indicated by the positions of the
  130.   3D buttons relating to that mode. In this respect, the user-interface
  131.   can be considered similar to a piece of hardware.
  132.   
  133. 2.1.1) COMMAND Mode
  134.  
  135.   This is the most important mode from which all other modes are accessed.
  136.   To indicate that Xenakis is in command mode the Xenakis logo in the
  137.   centre of the screen will rotate. If you find that you cannot access
  138.   a function, try exiting modes until the logo spins.
  139.   
  140. 2.1.2) PLAY Mode
  141.  
  142.   This mode is entered by pressing the play button or hotkey. Whilst in play
  143.   mode Xenakis constantly plays-back the current song or pattern. To return
  144.   to command mode you must press the stop button or press Escape.
  145.   
  146. 2.1.3) EDIT Mode
  147.  
  148.   This mode is entered by pressing the record button or hotkey. This mode
  149.   allows you to create or edit the pattern data of a song. To return to
  150.   command mode press the stop button or Escape.
  151.   Whilst in edit mode, if the Audition button is down, then scrolling 
  152.   through the pattern data will sound the notes on every channel 
  153.   accordingly, and produce any effects entered in the pattern also.
  154.   This is a very powerful composition aid, allowing the pattern to
  155.   be heard as notes and effects are entered.

  157. 2.1.4) Other Modes
  158.  
  159.   Other modes include the SEQUENCE EDIT mode and the LOAD SONG mode. These
  160.   are much more restrictive modes in that the mouse is contained within the
  161.   window at the top left of the screen. You may exit these modes by pressing
  162.   either the tick or the cross buttons towards the top of the window.

  234. 3) KNOWN BUGS

  236.   Version 1.00ß, Release 1 is known to have the following bugs:

  238.   i)  Play pattern with the left hand mouse button operates play from
  239.       current sequence position instead.

  241.   ii) Repeat points do not work correctly if value is above 64k in sample.
