About Woodland Birds CD-ROM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Woodland Series CD-ROM aims to equip students with a network of
ideas essential to the Life Sciences. By concentrating on one habitat
type, students are able to understand the complex relationship
between species and environment. Familiar species are seen as the
products of millions of years of evolution, precisely adapted to
exploit the resources of woodland habitats.
The Woodland Birds CD examines the wide variety of woodland habitats
that exist in modern Britain, and focuses on the 76 individual species
that make use of them. Over 350 high quality photos show the habitats,
and the birds at every stage of their lives: as eggs, nestlings,
fledglings and adults.
Extensive text covers all aspects of the habitats and species, supported
by over 100 songs and calls, plus maps, graphs and diagrams. The
simplest format: choosing a woodland habitat and then looking at the
birds that live there, will be appreciated by teachers of Key Stage 2
children. Why should one species live in that habitat but not another?
The answers are on the CD-ROM. Older students can conduct in-depth
investigations, suggested by the teacher materials, using extensive
cross-referencing and index facilities. Topics include competition for
resources and territory-holding, the predator/prey relationship and
food chains.
