  4. What is LyX?
  5. ------------

  7. LyX is a free program that provides a more modern approach to writing 
  8. documents with a computer.  Compared to common word processors, LyX will 
  9. increase productivity, since the job of typesetting is done mostly by 
  10. the computer, not the author.
  11.  
  12. Technically, this is done by combining the comfortable interface of a
  13. WYSIWYG word processor with the high quality output of a real typesetting
  14. system.  LyX uses LaTeX, the most popular typesetting system available, 
  15. but no knowledge about LaTeX is required.
  16.  
  17. All in all, LyX is a complete environment for writing documents.  It has
  18. superior support for scientific writing, but works well for any kind of
  19. document.  Several people have reported that they have dropped various
  20. commercial word processors in favour of LyX.

  49. or another, and lots of new features have been added.

  51. If you use LyX version 0.10.x or earlier, we strongly recommend you upgrade.

  53. LyX still can't read LaTeX documents directly, but we provide a perl script 
  54. that converts most LaTeX documents to LyX files.  Of course, LyX can export 
  55. nice LaTeX files.

  57. What are the plans for LyX in the future?
  58. -----------------------------------------

  60. The next major release of LyX will be LyX v1.0.
  61. We plan to use a subset of LaTeX as document format in a brand new and 
  62. more powerful kernel, and thus scrap the current LyX format. We also plan 
  63. to make LyX partially GUI independent, and thereby allow the use of more
  64. toolkits like XForms, Qt, Gtk, etc., with a compile-time switch.

  66. How stable is LyX?
  67. ------------------

  69. LyX is developed in C++ using the XForms library. The source code is
  70. more than 75,000 lines long, and nobody claims that those are bug free.
  71.  
  72. Nevertheless, LyX v0.12 is to be considered stable software. It has
  73. been in extensive beta testing for more than a month and all reported bugs 
  74. were either fixed or documented.
  75.  
  76. No known serious problems are known and LyX supports back-ups, timed back-ups
  77. and emergency saves, but as with any software, you should take appropriate 
  78. back-up steps in a production environment.

  114. It is possible to run LyX in a temporary directory before you install it.

  116. Experience shows that updates to v0.12.0 can be expected in the near
  117. future, so make sure you get the latest version in the v0.12.x series when
  118. you grab it.
