  3. To create a submarine involves 10 basic stages:

  5. ΓÇó KEEL LAYING
  6. ΓÇó BUILD
  7. ΓÇó ADVANCED OUTFITTING
  8. ΓÇó LAUNCH
  9. ΓÇó FINAL OUTFITTING
  10. ΓÇó SYSTEMS TESTING AND HARBOUR ACCEPTANCE TRIALS
  11. ΓÇó CONTRACTORS' SEA TRIALS
  12. ΓÇó COMMISSIONING
  13. ΓÇó ACCEPTANCE AND HANDOVER
  14.  
  15. DESIGN
  16. This has three phases (Conceptual, Preliminary and Final);
  17.  
  18. KEEL LAYING (or laying down the first hull section);
  19.  
  20. BUILD (now often called Modular Build) 
  21. Since 1993, all submarines have been built as hull units undercover at Barrow and welded together to form the hull, supported on stands in the covered Build Hall;
  22.  
  23. ADVANCED OUTFITTING
  24. In modern submarine building, as much outfitting as possible and some systems testing is actually completed before the hull units are welded together (closed up);
