How to Get Technical Support
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before attempting to install the Ether16 LAN Card's network software
drivers, you should configure the card's internal settings with the
SETUP utility included on the Ether16 disk. To configure the card:
1. Get to the DOS command prompt (C:\>).
It is important that you have a "clean bootup" with no
network drivers loaded. If possible, bypass all of your
system's startup files and get to a DOS prompt.
If you are using Windows, close it down completely (select
File, then Exit from the Program Manager menu). Do NOT
run the Setup program from within a DOS window.
If you are using Windows 95, restart your PC. Hit the F8 key
when "Starting Windows 95..." appears on your screen. Select
"Command Prompt Only" from the menu that appears. When your
system continues booting again, press the F5 key to bypass all of
your startup files.
2. Insert the Ether16 disk into drive A: or B:. Then, from the
DOS prompt, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP and press the Enter key.
3. Select "Configure the Ether16 LAN Card Hardware" option from
the menu. Configure the card's I/O, IRQ, and connector type
settings (you can use the auto configure function if you want).
When you're finished, restart your computer and follow the
network software driver setup instructions shown below.
Important Note: When you configure the card's hardware, write
down the IRQ and I/O memory address that you use. You'll need
to make sure that your network software is configured so that
it uses these same values before your workstation will be able
to communicate with the network.
4. After the card has been set up, your PC will restart itself.
Connect your network cabling to the card and then run the
Setup program again. Run the Setup program's basic diagnostics
on the card to make sure that the hardware has been installed
correctly.

Installing the Network Drivers for Windows 95
--------------------------------------------------------------------
You can install the Ether16 with either Windows 95's own internal
network drivers, or with the drivers that are supplied on the Ether16
LAN Card disk.
Installing the Network Drivers supplied by Windows 95
-----------------------------------------------------
1. Allow Windows 95 to start up. If 95 displays a "new hardware
detected" message and indicates that it has found an NE2000-compatible
network card, skip to step 3 below. If no message appears, continue
with step 2 instead.
2. Click on Start, followed by Settings, Control Panel, Network, Add,
and Adapter. Pick Linksys from the list of manufacturers. Choose
Linksys Ether16 LAN Card from the list of network adapters.
Click on OK.
3. Highlight the driver (Linksys Ether16 or NE2000 Compatible) in the
"The following components..." box, then click on the Properties
button.
4. Click on the Resources tab. Change the Interrupt (IRQ) and I/O
address values to match the ones chosen in step 3 above ("BEFORE
YOU BEGIN"), then click on OK.
5. Click on OK again. Windows 95 will begin copying the files it needs
from your 95 CD-ROM or installation disks. When the copying is
complete, you will be asked if you want to restart your computer.
Click on Yes. The driver installation is complete.
Installing the Network Drivers supplied on the Diskette
-------------------------------------------------------
Note: If your card is recognized as a NE2000 Compatible card you can not
use the drivers included on the diskette.
1. Start up Windows 95 if you haven't already. Click on Start,
followed by Control Panel, and the Network icon.
2. Click on "Add". You will be asked to select a component type.
Choose "Adapter" or "Network Adapter".
3. A list of network card manufacturers and various adapter models
will appear. Insert the Ether16 disk into drive A. Click on
the "Have Disk" button. When asked for the path of the disk,
type "A:\WIN95" and click on OK. Select the adapter from the list
and click OK.
When the installation of the driver is complete, proceed to the next
section to enable file & printer sharing.

ENABLING FILE & PRINTER SHARING UNDER WINDOWS 95
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The instructions below explain how to turn on file & printer sharing in
Windows 95. Before following them, make sure that you have already
installed & configured your Linksys network adapter(s).
Getting Started
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Start up Windows 95 if you haven't already. Click on the Start button,
followed by Settings, Control Panel, and the Network icon.
2. Click on the Configuration window tab. If you see File and printer
sharing for Microsoft Networks in the list of items that appears,
close the Control Panel and go to Enabling File Sharing or How to
Share Printers below. Otherwise, go to step 3.
3. Click on the File and Print Sharing button.
4. If you want other users to be able to access your files, use your
mouse to put a checkmark next to the I want to be able to give others
access to my files option. If you want others to be able to use
printer(s) that are plugged into your computer, put a checkmark next
to the I want to allow others to print to my printers option.
When you're finished, click on OK. You'll now see a text line that
reads File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks in the
Configuration list box. (If you don't see it, you might need to use
the scroll bars to scroll through the list). Click on OK. When 95
asks if you want to restart your computer, click on Yes.
Enabling File Sharing
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After following steps 1-4 above, double-click on your My Computer icon.
A window of available disk drives will appear. Using your right mouse
button, click once on the drive that you want to make available to other
users. Click on Sharing, followed by the Sharing tab. Click on Share As.
In the Share Name box, give your computer a name (you can call it whatever
you want--Mary's Computer, etc.).
Next, decide on the type of access that you want to give other users.
* Read-Only access lets other users view the files on your PC.
* Full access lets users create, change, or delete files on your system.
* Depends on Password lets users have Read-Only and/or Full access,
depending on the password that you decide to share with them.
Use your mouse to select the type of file sharing access that you want
other users to have. If you want to assign access password(s), type them
into the Password box(es). When you're done, click on the Apply button,
followed by OK. Your drive(s) can now be accessed from other users
whenever they click on their Windows 95 Network Neighborhood icons. If a
user tries to access one of your drives that's password-protected, he or
she will be asked for the appropriate Read-Only or Full access password.
How to Share Printers
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After following steps 1-4 above, double-click on your My Computer icon.
Click on the Printers folder. A window of available printers will appear.
Using your right mouse button, click once on the printer that you want to
share with other users. Click on Sharing, followed by the Sharing tab.
Click on Share As. In the Share Name box, give a name to the printer
you're about to share (Jack's HP4, for example). If you want to assign a
password to the printer so only certain users can access it, type a
password in the Password box. When you're done, click on the Apply
button, followed by OK. Your printer(s) are now shared.
