  7. the Advanced Installation Options section at the end of this file.

  9. Windows NT 4.0 Installation Instructions
  10. ----------------------------------------
  11. The following steps describe how to install your 3Com network NIC in a
  12. computer running Windows NT 4.0. 
  13.  
  14. 1.  Start Windows NT.
  15.  
  16. 2.  Click the start menu in the lower right corner of the screen.  Choose
  17.     Settings, Control Panel.  In the Control Panel, double-click the Network 
  18.     icon.
  19.  
  20. 3.  Click the Adapters tab in the Network Control Panel.
  21.  
  22. Note:  If Networking has not been installed in your system before, 
  23.        when you open the Network control panel Windows NT will ask 
  24.        you if you want to install networking.  Click Yes and refer 
  25.        to the Windows NT Documentation for instructions. If you have
  26.        previously installed a Windows NT service pack, you need to
  27.        reinstall the service pack after the network installation is 
  28.        complete to insure the Windows NT network components are
  29.        updated to the level of the service pack.
  30.  
  31. 4.  Click Add...
  32.  
  33. 5.  In the Select Network Adapter window, Click Have Disk.
  34.  
  35. 6.  Insert the EtherDisk #1 diskette into drive A: and press
  36.     Enter.
  37.  
  38. 7.  In the Select OEM Option box, select the entry that matches the
  39.     3Com XL NIC you are installing.
  40.  
  41. 8.  Click the OK button. Files are read from EtherDisk 1, and the 3Com
  42.     GUI installer runs.
  43.  
  44. 9.  On the first menu, choose Express Installation and click OK.  The
  45.     program will test the NIC and test the NICs connection to the
  46.     network.  If any tests fail, and error box appears with a message
  47.     about the failure.  Click the help button for help on how to fix
  48.     the problem.  If no computer name or workgroup name is present, the
  49.     GUI will request these names.  Seek help from your network 
  50.     administrator if you don't know what to enter.

  52. 10. Click the Finish button to complete the GUI.  Windows NT will prompt
  53.     for diskette #2.  Place EtherDisk #2 in diskette drive A: and click
  54.     OK.  Files are copied from EtherDisk #2.
  55.  
  56. 11. You may be prompted for network configuration information by Windows
  57.     NT.  Seek help from your network administrator if you don't know what
  58.     to enter.

  60. 12. In the Network Settings Change window, click Yes to restart 
  61.     your computer.

  64. Windows NT 3.51 Installation Instructions
  65. -----------------------------------------
  66. The following steps describe how to install your 3Com network NIC in a
  67. computer running Windows NT 3.51. 
  68.  
  69. 1.  Start Windows NT.
  70.  
  71. 2.  In the Control panel, double-click the Network icon.
  72.  
  73. 3.  In the Network Settings window, select the existing 3Com driver in    
  74.     the Installed adapters group (if present).
  75.  
  76. 4.  Click Remove.
  77.  
  78. 5.  Click Yes in the Network Settings dialog box.
  79.  
  80. 6.  In the Network Settings window, click Add Adapter.
  81.  
  82. 7.  In the Add Network adapter window, press and hold the down arrow until
  83.     <Other> Requires Disk from Manufacturer appears.
  84.  
  85.     NOTE: This requires the 3Com EtherDisk #1 diskette.     
  86.  
  87. 8.  Click Continue.
  88.  
  89. 9.  Insert the EtherDisk #1 diskette into drive A: and press
  90.     enter.
  91.  
  92. 10. In the Select OEM Option box, select the entry that matches the
  93.     3Com XL NIC you are installing.
  94.  
  95. 11. Click the OK button.
  96.  
  97. 12. Click Close in the Welcome screen that appears.
  98.  
  99. 13. In the Network Settings window, click OK.
  100.  
  101.     If you are prompted for network information, contact your system     
  102.     administrator for information unique to your network.
  103.  
  104. 14. In the Network Settings Change window, click Restart to restart 
  105.     your computer.

  108. Troubleshooting 
  109. ---------------
  110. If  a message appears, stating that Windows NT networking is not installed, 
  111. either it has not been installed or a problem has occurred in changing the 
  112. network settings.  If you have never installed networking on this system, 
  113. proceed to the next section, "Installing Windows NT Networking for the 
  114. First Time." Otherwise, follow the steps here to reinstall Windows NT 
  115. networking.

  117.     Reinstalling Windows NT Networking
  118.     ----------------------------------
  119.     NOTE:  This procedure requires Windows NT installation media.
  120.  
  121.     WARNING:  You will lose all network settings when you perform this 
  122.               procedure.
  123.     
  124.     1.  Click No when asked if you wish to install networking.
  125.     
  126.     2.  In the Network Settings window, select each installed component 
  127.         one after the other, and click Remove after each one to uninstall 
  128.         all NICs and software listed in the window.
  129.     
  130.     3.  Click OK after you have been removed all items.
  131.     
  132.     4.  When asked if you want to reboot, click Restart Now.
  133.     
  134.     5.  When Windows NT restarts, go to the Network Control Panel.
  135.         You will  be asked again if you want to install networking.
  136.     
  137.     6.  In the Network Settings box, click Yes to begin installing 
  138.         Windows NT networking.
  139.     
  140.     7.  Enter the location of the Windows NT installation media.  For 
  141.         example, if your CD-ROM drive is E:, type:
  142.     
  143.         E:\i386
  144.     
  145.     8.  In the NIC Card Detection window, click Do Not Detect.  
  146.     
  147.     9.  In the Add Network NIC window, press and hold the down arrow key 
  148.         until the option <Other> Requires Disk from Manufacturer appears.
  149.     
  150.     10. Insert the EtherDisk 1 diskette into drive A: and press
  151.         enter.
  152.     
  153.     11. In the Select OEM Option box, select the entry that matches the
  154.         3Com XL NIC you are installing.
  155.     
  156.     12. Click the OK button.
  157.     
  158.     13. Select the network protocols you will be using on the network and 
  159.         then click Continue.
  160.     
  161.         Consult your system administrator to find out which protocols to 
  162.         select.
  163.     
  164.     14. Click OK in the Network Settings window to accept the choices you 
  165.         have made.
  166.      
  167.     15. Provide additional information, as required, during the network 
  168.         installation process.
  169.     
  170.         Your computer can auto detect the frame type if needed, but you 
  171.         must obtain IP address and gateway information from your system 
  172.         administrator.
  173.         
  174.     16. Enter the workgroup name or the domain name in the Domain/Workgroup 
  175.         Settings window and click OK.
  176.     
  177.     17. When prompted, press the Restart button on your computer to finish 
  178.         the installation.
  179.  
  180.     18. If you have installed an NT service pack, you will need to reinstall
  181.         the service pack to make sure the Microsoft network components are
  182.         upgraded to the level of the service pack.

  185.     Installing Windows NT Networking for the First Time
  186.     ---------------------------------------------------
  187.     If you have never installed networking on this computer, begin at step
  188.     5 in Reinstalling Windows NT Networking.

  191. ADVANCED INTALLATION OPTIONS
  192. ----------------------------
  193.  
  194.     Running Windows NT on a Non-Intel Processor
  195.     -----------------------------------------
  196.  
  197.     If your system cannot run the Configuration and Diagnostic 
  198.     program, you may need to set the speed and duplex level of the NIC in 
  199.     the Windows NT registry.  The speed and duplex value of the NIC can be 
  200.     set manually by using the MEDIA keyword.  To set the MEDIA keyword, add 
  201.     the key MEDIA to the registry in the subkey:    
  202.                     
  203.     \\HKEY_lOCAL_NACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\El90x?\Parameters
  204.  
  205.     NOTE: Multiple subkeys that look like El90x appear right next to 
  206.           each other.  The correct one has a digit in place of the ? 
  207.           in the above expression to represent which NIC it is (for 
  208.           example El90x1).  The incorrect one simply reads El90x.

  211.     The value for the MEDIA keyword should be one from the list below.  The 
  212.     default is NotPresent.
