  2.                    EtherDisk (R) Diskette for the
  3.           3C90X EtherLink XL 10/100 / EtherLink XL NIC Family
  4.   Microsoft Windows 95 with Microsoft's Client for NetWare Networks
  5.  
  6. To install the Windows 95 driver to support Microsoft's client for NetWare 
  7. networks, follow these steps.
  8.  
  9. NOTE:  It is assumed that Windows 95 has already been installed.
  10.  
  11. First-Time Installation
  12. ------------------------
  13.  
  14. The 3Com EtherDisk diskette #3 and the Windows 95 installation files will
  15. be needed during the installation.
  16.  
  17. 1.  After installing the NIC as described in the user guide, start your
  18.     computer.  When Windows 95 starts, it acknowledges the NIC, and the
  19.     following message appears on the screen:
  20.  
  21.     Windows has found new hardware and is installing software for it.
  22.     
  23.     NOTE: If Windows 95 Recognizes the NIC and starts copying files right
  24.           away then you have an existing version of the installation.  
  25.           To update your installation and the driver reboot your system
  26.           and then follow the instructions in the Updating Your Driver
  27.           section below.  If Windows does not detect new hardware, the
  28.           system may have installed a generic PCI Ethernet driver.  Refer
  29.           to the hint section for details.
  30.     
  31.     If the message above does not appear, it is likely that Plug and Play
  32.     mode has been disabled.  In this case, proceed as follows:
  33.     a.  Click the Add New Hardware icon on the control panel screen.  
  34.     b.  Continue to click next until Windows 95 asks if you want it to 
  35.         search for new hardware.  
  36.     c.  Click no and then click next.  
  37.     d.  Choose Network Adapters in the Hardware Types menu and then 
  38.         click next.  
  39.     e.  Click Have Disk... and then skip to step 3.
  40.     
  41. 2.  Select Driver from Disk Provided by Hardware Manufacturer and click OK.    
  42.  
  43. 3.  Insert the EtherDisk 1 diskette in the A: drive and click OK.
  44.  
  45. 4.  Select the NIC that you installed in your computer from the list that 
  46.     appears; then click next.  
  47.  
  48. 5.  If this is the first time you have installed a NIC on your computer,
  49.     Windows 95 may ask you to supply the computer name and workgroup
  50.     name.  If your system administrator has supplied you with this
  51.     information, use it.  If not, you can supply your own computer name and
  52.     workgroup name.
  53.  
  54. 6.  Windows now requires files from the Windows 95 installation media.
  55.     Enter the location of the media.  For example, if the
  56.     Windows 95 CD-ROM is in drive E, type:
  57.  
  58.     E:\WIN95
  59.     
  60. 7.  Click No if you are asked whether you want to reboot.
  61.  
  62. 8.  When you return to the desktop, double-click the My Computer icon, then 
  63.     Control Panel, and then Network.
  64.     
  65. 9.  You must now change the Configuration.  
  66.     The default network setup for Windows 95 Consists of the following 
  67.     five components:
  68.  
  69.     Client for Microsoft Network
  70.     Client for NetWare Networks
  71.     3Com Fast EtherLink XL 10/100Mb Ethernet NIC
  72.     IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
  73.     NetBEUI
  74.  
  75.     Remove these two components by clicking the item and then clicking 
  76.     the Remove button. 
  77.  
  78.     Client for Microsoft Network
  79.     NetBEUI
  80.     
  81.     The network components should now only include:
  82.     
  83.     Client for NetWare Networks
  84.     3Com Fast EtherLink XL 10/100Mb Ethernet NIC
  85.     IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
  86.  
  87. 10. If any of these components are missing and are required for your
  88.     network, add them by clicking the Add button.  
  89.     Add protocols by choosing the protocol and clicking the Add button.  
  90.     In the Select Network Protocol window, choose vendor in the left 
  91.     pane,  in the right pane, select the protocol and click OK.  
  92.     Add clients by choosing the client and clicking the Add button.  In 
  93.     the Select Network Client window, choose Microsoft in the left pane, 
  94.     choose the client in the right pane, and click the OK button.  
  95.  
  96. 11. Click Client for NetWare Networks and then the Properties button.
  97.  
  98. 12. Under the General tab, set your Preferred Server and the First Network 
  99.     Drive.  When you have finished, click OK.
  100.     
  101. 13. Set the primary network logon to Client for NetWare Networks and click
  102.     OK.    
  103.     
  104. 14. When prompted, restart your computer.    
  105.      
  106. Hints
  107. -----
  108. 1.  If an error message appears, saying that the .INF file cannot be found
  109.     in the specified location, verify that Windows 95 is looking at the
  110.     correct location. The file should be in the root directory of the
  111.     3Com EtherDisk diskette #1.  The filename is W95EL90X.INF.
  112.  
  113.     If it is missing, download the file from 3Com's download sites, and
  114.     make sure you expand it properly. Refer to the SUPPORT.TXT file on this
  115.     diskette for more information.
  116.  
  117. 2.  To verify that the actual NetWare driver was copied to your Windows 95
  118.     system, compare the date of the driver .SYS file in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  119.     directory of your hard drive with the date of the one in the root
  120.     directory of the 3Com EtherDisk 2 diskette. The dates should be the same.
  121.  
  122. 3.  If Windows 95 does not detect new hardware, then the system may
  123.     have installed a generic PCI Ethernet driver.  In this case:
  124.  
  125.     a. Double-click on the System icon in the Control Panel.
  126.     b. Change to the Device Manager tab.
  127.     c. Under the Network Adapter section, the 3Com driver will be listed
  128.        with a yellow exclamation in front of it.
  129.     d. Under the Other Devices section, there will be a PCI Ethernet
  130.        Controller listed with a question mark in front of it.
  131.     e. Highlight the PCI Ethernet Controller under Other Devices and click
  132.        on the Remove button.  Select Yes if asked to confirm removal of
  133.        this device.  Select No if asked to restart the computer.
  134.     f. Highlight the 3Com Fast EtherLink/EtherLink XL driver under Network
  135.        Adapters and click on the Remove button.  Select Yes if asked to
  136.        confirm removal of this device.  Select No if asked to restart the
  137.        computer.
  138.     g. Click OK to save all changes.  Restart the computer.
  139.  
  140. Updating Your Driver
  141. --------------------
  142.  To update the driver and the support files follow the following 
  143.  instructions:
  144.  
  145. 1.  Open the Network Control Panel.
  146.  
  147. 2.  Click Add..
  148.  
  149. 3.  Select Adapter and Click Add.. 
  150.  
  151. 4.  Click Have Disk..
  152.  
  153. 5.  Insert the EtherDisk 1 Diskette into the A drive and click OK.
  154.  
  155. 6.  Select the NIC you have and click OK.
  156.  
  157. 7.  Remove all EtherLink XL adapters from the control panel by selecting
  158.     them one at a time and clicking Remove.
  159.     
  160. 8.  Click OK 
  161.  
  162. 9.  When Windows 95 asks the question Do you wish to reboot the system
  163.     Click YES.
  164.     
  165. 10. Go to step one of the First-Time Installation section, but when 
  166.     Windows 95 starts copying files right away do not be alarmed it
  167.     is copying the updated versions.
