  1.       3Com NDIS 2.01 driver installation notes for IBM LAN Server

  4.  This EtherDisk diskette contains Ethernet driver import files for
  5.  IBM LAN Server.
  6.  
  7.  IBM LAN Server 3.0
  8.  
  9.    IBM LAN Server 3.0 contains an installer for both OS/2 (LAPS) and DOS
  10.    (DXMAID).  Both of these installation utilities fully support OEM
  11.    network adapter driver import capability.
  12.  
  13.  DOS Installation
  14.  
  15.    Run the DXMAID installer from the IBM LAN Support diskette.  Use the
  16.    defaults from the first menu.  The second menu prompts you to enter the
  17.    drive and path for the import diskette.  Remove the LAN Support
  18.    diskette, put the 3Com EtherDisk diskette in the drive, and type
  19.    A:\NDIS\DOS for the drive and path.  The installer will pause after it
  20.    copies the files needed from the EtherDisk diskette.  Place the LAN
  21.    Support diskette back in the drive, and continue the installation.

  23.  IBM LAN Server 2.0
  24.  
  25.    LAN Server 2.0 is not as sophisticated as LAN Server 3.0.  Installation
  26.    can be done successfully, but manual intervention is required.  In all
  27.    cases, the user is required to edit files.  Use either EDLIN or EDIT.

  29.  DOS Installation
  30.  
  31.    Run the DXMAID installer from the LAN Support diskette.  Specify the
  32.    Ethernet adapter installation from the menu.  When DXMAID is completed,
  33.    do the following to complete the installation.

  35.    1. Copy the NDIS 2.01 driver to the hard disk.  Type:
  36.  
  37.       COPY A:\NDIS\DOS\EL59X.DOS C:\LANMAN
  38.  
  39.    2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file.
  40.  
  41.       a. Change the line:
  42.  
  43.          device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS
  44.  
  45.          to
  46.  
  47.          device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS /I:\LANMAN
  48.  
  49.       b. Change the line:
  50.  
  51.          device = XX.DOS
  52.  
  53.          to
  54.  
  55.          device = \LANMAN\EL59X.DOS
  56.  
  57.       c. Save the file and exit the editor.
  58.  
  59.    3. Enter the LANMAN subdirectory.  Type:
  60.  
  61.       CD LANMAN
  62.  
  63.    4. Rename the PROTOCOL.INI file to save it.  Type:
  64.  
  65.       REN PROTOCOL.INI PROTOCOL.OLD
  66.  
  67.    5. Append the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from the 3Com EtherDisk diskette.  
  68.       Type:

  70.       COPY PROTOCOL.OLD + A:\NDIS\DOS\PROTOCOL.INI  PROTOCOL.INI

  72.    6. Edit the new PROTOCOL.INI file.

  74.       a. Four lines after the line [ETHERNET], change the line:
  75.  
  76.          Bindings = IBMAC
  77.  
  78.          to
  79.  
  80.          Bindings = EL59X
  81.  
  82.       b. Two lines before the line:
  83.  
  84.          ;3C59X 3Com Fast EtherLink and EtherLink III Bus Master Adapters
  85.  
  86.          change the blank line to
  87.  
  88.          [EL59X]
  89.  
  90.       c. Save the file and exit the editor.
  91.  
  92.    The installation is complete.  The LAN Support program activates the
  93.    next time the machine boots.
