  8.   Overview
  9.   --------

  11.   The configuration portion of the program allows you to change the
  12.   configuration parameters for the adapter to fit the specific
  13.   environment in which the adapter is installed.
  14.  
  15.   The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic Program
  16.   is designed to make sure that the adapter is installed correctly and
  17.   functioning properly in your computer.  The Group 1 tests check the
  18.   physical components, connectors, and circuitry of the adapter and
  19.   require only that the adapter be installed in the computer.  The
  20.   Group 2 tests check the adapter's ability to transmit data on the
  21.   network and require that the adapter be connected to a loopback plug
  22.   or to a network.  The Group 3 tests check the adapter's ability to
  23.   correctly transmit and receive data over the network and require
  24.   that the adapter be connected to a network on which an echo server
  25.   has been set up.

  28.   The computer containing the adapter to be configured or tested must be
  29.   running DOS only.
  30.  
  31.   NOTE:  If this computer is an operating server, notify all users of the
  32.          server to save their work and log out from the network.  The
  33.          Configuration and Diagnostic Program disrupts the normal operation
  34.          of servers and workstations, so work that is not saved may be lost.
  35.  
  36.          Then shut down the server, and reboot with a DOS-only diskette.
  37.          (This way no drivers or TSRs will be running when the program
  38.           is started.)

  40.   Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic Program
  41.   --------------------------------------------------

  43.    There are two ways to start the program:
  44.  
  45.    *  Automatically, from the INSTALL.EXE program, by selecting the options
  46.       in the Configuration and Diagnostic submenu.
  47.  
  48.    *  Manually, from the root directory of the EtherDisk diskette, by typing
  49.       the following command:
  50.  
  51.                  3C59XCFG [command keyword] [parameter list]
  52.  
  53.       3C59XCFG represents the 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic Program name.
  54.       The brackets indicate that the command keyword and parameter list are
  55.       optional.
  56.  
  57.       3C59XCFG without any arguments invokes the program in full windows mode.
  58.       This includes mouse support and context-sensitive help.  Press [F1] for
  59.       help at any time.

  61.       Command Line Keywords:
  62.       ----------------------
  63.  
  64.       You can use the first two characters of any command or parameter
  65.       as a shortcut.  For example, 3C59XCFG HE RU means 3C59XCFG HELP RUN.

  67.       Also, the command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive,
  68.       so CONFIGURE, configure, and Configure, for example, will all work.

  71.       CONFIGURE - Configures an adapter in one of three ways.
  72.                   (1) automatically with /auto parameter
  73.                   (2) using a specified adapter configuration file
  74.                   (3) using command line configuration parameters
  75.  
  76.       ECHOSERVER - Enables a designated adapter to function within the echo
  77.                    server.
  78.  
  79.       HELP - Displays general or command-specific help information.  To get
  80.              command-specific help, enter:
  81.  
  82.                           3C59XCFG HELP [command keyword]
  83.  
  84.       LANGUAGE - Invokes the program in full windows mode using a specified
  85.                  external resource file.  This option provides support for
  86.                  multiple languages via a different resource file for each
  87.                  language supported.
  88.  
  89.       LIST - Displays a list of installed adapters recognized by this program
  90.              and their assigned adapter numbers.
  91.  
  92.       RUN - Executes the diagnostic tests (which can also be specified from a
  93.             file) on a selected adapter and writes the results to the screen,
  94.             a file, or a printer.

  97.   Configuration
  98.   -------------

  100.   The adapter can be configured in one of the following four ways, which
  101.   are described in greater detail below:
  102.  
  103.       *  Full Screen Windows Mode
  104.       *  Command Line with Auto Configuration
  105.       *  Command Line with Explicit Parameters
  106.       *  Command Line with Configuration File
  107.  
  108.      Full screen windows mode
  109.      ------------------------
  110.  
  111.      To configure the adapter using the full screen windowing, type 3C59XCFG
  112.      and [Enter].  Then select the Configure Adapter option in the Install
  113.      pull-down menu.
  114.  
  115.      Command line options
  116.      --------------------
  117.  
  118.      Defaults:  CONFIGURE has /AUTO and /ADAPTERNUM:1 as defaults.  So for
  119.      example, if only  "3c59xcfg configure" is used, adapter number 1 will be
  120.      auto configured.
  121.  
  122.      ADAPTERNUM:N and /SLOT:S parameters can be used with any of the CONFIGURE
  123.      options that follow.  They are both intended for use whenever multiple
  124.      adapters are present in the computer and recognized by the Configuration
  125.      and Diagnostic Program.

  127.      /ADAPTERNUM:N specifies the adapter number to be configured for PCI and
  128.      and EISA computers.  Run the LIST command separately to determine the
  129.      adapter number to use here.

  131.      /SLOT:S specifies the physical slot number of the adapter to be configured
  132.      in EISA computers.

  135.      Command Line with Auto Configuration
  136.      ------------------------------------

  138.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG CONFIGURE  /AUTO
  139.  
  140.      The /AUTO parameter configures the adapter automatically select media
  141.      type. All other option settings are left unchanged.
  142.  
  143.      NOTE:  The program will attempt to detect what media type is being
  144.      used, to set the media type.  Therefore connect to the network
  145.      first, then run /AUTO, and it will configure the media type for you.

  148.      Command Line with Explicit Parameters
  149.      -------------------------------------

  151.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG CONFIGURE  [ /BSIZE:N  /XCVR:N  /TR:N
  152.                       /FULLDUPLEX:N /OPTIMIZE:N  /LINKBEAT:N ]
  153.  
  154.      Command line configuration parameters are used to configure the adapter
  155.      using only the option settings you specify.  Some parameters are for
  156.      all adapters, some are for PCI only.  For example, /BSIZE:N is an
  157.      PCI-only parameter, because with EISA adapters, the computer vendor's
  158.      configuration utility or the opttion diskette handles the setting of
  159.      the Boot PROM size.  In most cases, any combination of parameters can
  160.      be used.  Therefore it is possible to modify only a few settings if
  161.      needed.
  162.  
  163.         /BSIZE - Boot PROM Size  (PCI only)
  164.                Possible values - 8,16,32,64,disabled
  165.  
  166.         /TR (or /XCVR) - Transceiver  (PCI only)
  167.                Possible values - 100BASE-TX, TP, 10BASE-T (same as TP), COAX,
  168.                                  AUI, EXTERNAL (same as AUI)

  170.         /OPTIMIZE - Network Driver Optimization
  171.                Possible values - NORMAL, NETWORK, CPU
  172.  
  173.         /LINKBEAT - Link beat disable/enable  (pre-10BASE-T standard only)
  174.                Possible values - disabled, enabled
  175.  
  176.                NOTE:  Try this setting ONLY if pre-10BASE-T standard hubs
  177.                are in use.
  178.  
  179.         /FULLDUPLEX - Full Duplex disable/enable (For 10Base-T only)
  180.                Possible values - disabled, enabled
  181.  
  182.                NOTE:  Enable this setting ONLY when the adapter is connected
  183.                       to a 10BASE-T repeater supporting full duplex.
  184.                       Otherwise, it will bring down the network.

  186.      Command Line with Configuration File
  187.      ------------------------------------

  189.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG CONFIGURE  /CONFIGFILE:filename
  190.  
  191.      /CONFIGFILE:filename is used to configure an adapter with the settings
  192.      specified in an ASCII configuration file that can be created and modified
  193.      by any text editor.  The filename can be a fully qualified DOS filename
  194.      including a path.  A standard format for the file must be used, as
  195.      follows:
  196.  
  197.         -  Variable names and values match the wording in the full-screen
  198.             configure window in most cases.
  199.  
  200.         -  Begin each variable/value line with an "at" symbol (@), followed by
  201.            a variable name, a colon (:), and the value.
  202.  
  203.                 Example:  @Media type: 100BASE-TX
  204.  
  205.         -  Blank lines and other white spaces are allowed between variable
  206.            lines.
  207.  
  208.         -  Start any comment lines with a semicolon (;).
  209.  
  210.         -  The variable names allowed are:
  211.                 Boot PROM size
  212.                 Media type
  213.                 Network driver optimization
  214.                 Full Duplex
  215.                 Link beat
  216.  
  217.         -  The values allowed are the same as those shown in the full-screen
  218.            configure window.

  220.                 Example 1:  @Network driver optimization:Normal
  221.                 Example 2:  @Media type:On-board Coax

  223.   Diagnostic
  224.   ----------

  226.   *  Full screen windows mode
  227.  
  228.      To run the diagnostic tests using the full screen windowing, type
  229.      "3C59XCFG" and ENTER.  Then select the Run Tests option in the Tests
  230.      pull-down menu.

  232.   *  Command line option - "Run"
  233.  
  234.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG RUN  [/TESTFILE:filename] [/RESULTS:[filename
  235.                       | PRN | PRNHP]] [/ADAPTERNUM:N | /SLOT:S]

  237.      The RUN parameter executes the diagnostic tests on a selected adapter
  238.      and displays the results on the screen.  The defaults are adapter number 1
  239.      and Group 1 tests.  The parameters below are all optional.
  240.  
  241.      /TESTFILE:filename specifies a test file that contains a specific test
  242.      setup description.
  243.  
  244.      /RESULTS:[filename or PRN or PRNHP] specifies an alternative location to
  245.      store the test results.  This location can be a DOS path and filename,
  246.      PRN printer port (same as LPT1), or PRNHP, which is an HP LaserJet printer
  247.      connected to LPT1.
  248.  
  249.      /ADAPTERNUM:N specifies the adapter number to be tested, in the case of
  250.      multiple adapters installed in the computer and recognized by this
  251.      program.  Run the LIST command separately (see LIST below) to determine
  252.      the adapter number to use.

  254.      /SLOT:S specifies the physical slot number of the adapter to be tested
  255.      when multiple adapters are installed in EISA computers.

  258.   Other Command Line Options
  259.   --------------------------

  261.   *  HELP
  262.  
  263.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG HELP  [Command Keyword]
  264.  
  265.      HELP is an on-line summary of commands.  Without a command keyword,
  266.      it gives a summary of the command keywords.  With a command keyword
  267.      specified, it gives the parameter choices for that particular command.
  268.      For example, "3C59XCFG HELP CONFIGURE" gives details about the parameter
  269.      options for the CONFIGURE command.

  271.   *  LANGUAGE
  272.  
  273.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG LANGUAGE  /LANGFILE:filename
  274.  
  275.      LANGUAGE invokes the program in full windows mode using a specified
  276.      external resource file.  This option provides support for multiple
  277.      languages via a different resource file for each language supported.
  278.  
  279.      /LANGFILE:filename is a required parameter with this command.
  280.      The filename is the name of the resource file that is loaded by the
  281.      program.  The filename can be a fully qualified DOS filename.
  282.  
  283.      NOTE: At this time, there are no alternate resource files included on
  284.      the EtherDisk diskette.

  286.   *  LIST
  287.  
  288.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG LIST
  289.  
  290.      LIST displays a list of currently installed adapters (and their assigned
  291.      adapter numbers) that are recognized by this program. The adapter number
  292.      is then used as the N value for the /ADAPTERNUM:N parameter when multiple
  293.      adapters are installed.  There are no parameters associated with the LIST
  294.      command keyword.

  296.   *  ECHOSERVER
  297.  
  298.      Command syntax:  3C59XCFG ECHOSERVER  [/ADAPTERNUM:N | /SLOT:S]
  299.  
  300.      ECHOSERVER enables an adapter to function within an echo server.
  301.      /ADAPTERNUM:N specifies the adapter number to be configured in the echo
  302.      server, in the case of multiple adapters.  /SLOT:S is available only on
  303.      EISA computers, and refers to the physical slot in the echo server
  304.      where the adapter is located.

  307.   Further Assistance

  310.   If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file
  311.   in the \DIAG directory on the EtherDisk diskette for troubleshooting
  312.   procedures.

  314.   The SUPPORT.TXT file in the \INFO subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette
  315.   provides information about obtaining product support for the adapter.
