Topic : Guidelines for the Television Echo
Rules : TV.RUL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the TELEVISION echo!
The below guidelines will be familiar to anyone who has dropped by
any of the other echos I am privileged enough to moderate. I have
however, added a "content definition" paragraph because the TV echo
encompasses much more than the specific content of the other echos
I moderate. Everyone should read this at least once. I apologize
for it's length. In the future, you need only read this maybe once
every six months or so, though I'll post it monthly. So with that
said, here's the ol' guidelines.
INTRO:
======
To those new in the echo - and to our echo experts - these are the
guidelines for this echo. I try to keep a very low profile on the echo
in regard to these guidelines, and I usually only speak up when some-
thing really aggrevating comes up. I consider every person who reads or
posts in this echo to be a guest of the echo, and I try to treat all
folks here as such. I always encourage self-monitoring; this has shown
that an echo can be handled lightly be a moderator and still be very
successful and enjoyable to all. Well, on with the guidelines...
DONT'S. (Please)
================
1. Please don't flame. Personal attacks are not suited to this echo.
(and everyone'll hate you if you do it, anyways.) Also, if you are a
multi-echo flame troller and stop by here just to try to incite a
riot, don't bother. All you'll get is ignored by everyone, warned
by the moderator, then be locked out of this echo.
2. No illegal messages (credit card numbers, pyramid schemes, etc)
3. No "general chatter" messages please. General chatter on subjects
other than television is not appropriate to this echo. Such mes-
saging should occur via Email or on any of the dozen "general chat"
Fido echos available.
4. No overtly sexual remarks or messages please...
5. No messages containing blatant racism, sexual harassment, avoca-
tion of violence, threats of harm, or vulgar "four letter words".
This should be considered a family echo.
6. No encrypted gifs or images files. (most people can't decode them).
Also no ansi screens please, as most Fido messaging systems can't
display them properly and such messages just look like "cyberjunk".
(Gifs and ansis can be made available by "freq" though if you are a
sysop.)
7. Please no tagline or signature scripts that are more than 3 lines.
The echo does cost Fido as a whole to distribute; individual sysops
often bear the cost of that. 6 line signatures repeated over and
over in message after message just constitutes more Kbytes that have
to be transmitted, and is unfair to the carriers of this echo. A
name, system origin or E-mail address, and maybe a one line tagline
(there for entertainment value) is all that is needed.
8. When quoting a message from someone else that you wish to respond to,
please quote only the relevant lines of text you want to reply to,
NOT THE WHOLE MESSAGE. Also please do not leave origin lines or
taglines in messages you are quoting from.
DO'S
====
1. Have fun! This echo is here to enhance your enjoyment of the subject
of this echo in all aspects, so have at it. Enjoy yourself!
2. The echo is open to discussion of it's main topic, or any related
topic. Threads exploring related topics are fine, as long as they
continue to relate to back to TV in some aspect or other. Discussion
of TV news, documentaries, and other TV related subjects is also
fine now (a change from the previous moderator's policy).
2(a) Discussion of theatrical films, however, should be handled in
the FILM echo, unless you are discussing something like a
specific TV presentation of some movie. Long discussions about
TV movies also should go into FILM. Of course, mentioning
movies in this echo is fine, but if a long thread looks like it
will develop on a movie, the discussion would best be taken to
FILM.
2(b) This is *not* a rule, but a suggestion. There are some TV shows
which are so popular, they have their own Fido echos. I
encourage those wanting to participate in long threads about
these shows to please use these show-specific echos for their
discussions. Mention of these shows is fine in TV, even light
threads, but long debates and discussions really should be
placed in the shows representative echos.
2(c) These are the shows I know of that have their own echos: Star
Trek, Star Trek TNG, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, (and other Trek
related echos), Babylon-5, X-Files, Sliders, Millennium, Quantum
Leap, Lost In Space, SeaQuest DSV, Rush Limbaugh, The Simpsons,
and the Muppet shows. There are also two echos, Animae and
Toons, for chat about cartoons and animation; "Wrestling", devoted
to WWF, WCW, and other pro-wrestling interests, and "sports" for
those into sports. There is a TVRO echo for those into satel-
lite stuff, a CableTV echo (privately available), FOXSFTV
(another good echo privately available) and Starman, a third
echo privately available. Finally, though not related directly
to TV, here are a few other conferences that those into TV might
enjoy: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Shortwave Radio, Radio Dramas
(like old radio shows), music and music videos, New Wave music,
60's and 70's progressive rock, and a nonsport cards echo for
those interested in collecting trading card sets of their
favorite TV shows. (If you know of any more, please let us know!)
3. Please use English for all messages. Although this echo does reach
other countries, (Germany, Italy, etc), the vast majority of echo
participants using the conference speak and use English as their main
language. Messages in other languages can be read by only a very
few people and interrupt the flow of the echo for those who can't
read these foreign languages. So please, English only.
4. If you post an article, transcript or other interesting thing that
we would all like, please try to give credit to the original pub-
lication or source for what you are posting.
5. The buying, selling, trading, & searching out of collectibles of
television may be a big part of your expression of enjoyment and
love for TV. (TV memorabilia is big these days!) Therefore,
if you collect and are looking for stuff, or have stuff to sell
(related to television of course) those messages are just fine.
Good luck in searching for your holy grails!
6. If you find *any* other media related to this echo that we would find
interesting, please tell us! This includes books on TV, magazine
articles or magazines about TV, conferences on the internet, other
television related Fidonet echos, listings of conventions of popular
TV shows, reference guides to TV or to specific series, episode guides,
or anything else that couch potatoes would find "cool". Cross-posts
from other conferences which you feel would be of interest to readers
of this echo are also fine. Share your info with us, that's what
we're here for!
This echo's purpose is to facilitate communication among TV fans, and
to be an information source for anything that people interested in
television would like. In other words, the echo is here to serve YOU.
Without YOU, this echo would be nothing. So use it and enjoy!
(Note: I post "do" #'s 5 & 6 above specifically because many moderators
of many echos don't allow merchandise-related messages on their echos,
and I wanted you to know such messages are perfectly ok here. Further,
some moderators prohibit, on their echos, even the mere _mention_ of com-
peting echos, conferences or nets relating to the subject matter of the
echos they moderate. (Such as on the "sffan" echo, where your humble
moderator got banned for life for just mentioning the Starman echo).
I feel such restrictions impugn the overall enjoyment folks may derive
from an echo, and moderators that force such policies upon users of an
echo are not acting in the best interests of their echo-guests. There-
fore, no such policies as those will be found here.)
Well, that's about it y'all! Not much in the way of rules I guess;
most everything is actually common sense. I prefer openness and
flexibility and trusting people to be at their best on their own,
as I said before, rather than forcing bureaucracy on everyone, having
zillions of rules, threats for violators, etc. (Although I do reserve
the right to issue warnings and execute feed drops if it becomes
necessary. I'd only do this if the above guidelines are repeatedly
violated by someone and they are causing disharmony in the echo by
their actions.)
Well, thanks for listening....
