  1. ANIMAL_RIGHTS RULES & GENERAL GUIDELINES (Rev. 9-6-97)

  3. PURPOSE: The purpose of the ANIMAL_RIGHTS conference is to educate
  4.         and be a forum for the exchange of ALL viewpoints and opinions
  5.         on the issue of animal rights. All sides of this emotional
  6.         issue will in all probability be represented. Therefore,
  7.         all users, whether pro or con on the animal rights issue
  8.         should feel free to express their opinions. They should
  9.         also expect to be challenged in their beliefs by those in
  10.         the oppositon, perhaps quite strongly.
  11.  
  12. RULES:  The rules for this conference are simple and few.
  13.         If you wish to discuss them, you must use NETMAIL.
  14.         Discussions of the rules within the conference 
  15.         are off-topic.
  16.  
  17.         1) The topic is animal rights.  All viewpoints are
  18.            welcome, but be sure you stay on-topic.  Side-
  19.            issues will be tolerated only if related to the
  20.            animal rights issue.
  21.  
  22.         2) The animal rights issue is an emotional one.
  23.            You are expected to control your anger, and to
  24.            treat all participants of the echo fairly and
  25.            with respect. Remember to attack the issue, and
  26.            not the person. 
  27.  
  28.         3) Quoting messages from others is a vital method
  29.            of ensuring that everyone knows what's being
  30.            discussed.  You are encouraged to quote.  Avoid
  31.            over-quoting at all times (instances in which the
  32.            the message you quote is longer than your reply).
  33.  
  34.            a) As a side-issue, participants are encouraged
  35.               to present information of interest to the
  36.               conference which may come from magazines,
  37.               newspapers, or other sources.  In order to
  38.               avoid deluging the conference with these,
  39.               please summarize the articles and provide an
  40.               electronic reference where they may be found.

  42.            b) It is not acceptable to post disclaimers to
  43.               such posts.  If you post it, you will be ex-
  44.               pected to discuss it if others wish to do so.
  45.  
  46.         4) In general, real names will be used in this con-
  47.            ference, either in the header or body of the message.
  48.  
  49.         5) Anything that has been deemed off-topic either by
  50.            these rules or by a ruling of the moderator will 
  51.            be resisted by all participants. Any off-topic 
  52.            message will be ignored by all participants. If you
  53.            feel a need to reply, use NETMAIL.
  54.  
  55.            a) The in-depth discussion of abortion has been deemed 
  56.               "off-topic."
  57.  
  58.            b) The in-depth discussion of religion has been deemed
  59.               "off-topic."
  60.  
  61.            c) The in-depth discussion of homosexuality has been
  62.               deemed "off-topic."
  63.  
  64.            d) The in-depth discussion of registration of
  65.               shareware has been deemed "off-topic."
  66.  
  67.         6) If you feel insulted, or personally affronted, you
  68.            have two alternatives:
  69.  
  70.            a) Ignore the person.
  71.  
  72.            b) Discuss the problem with the person in NETMAIL.
  73.  
  74.            The moderator does not feel obligated to settle
  75.            petty squabbles, nor should he. He is NOT your mom or
  76.            dad!
  77.  
  78.         7) Any "official" commentary on the part of the moderator
  79.            will have "From: Moderator" in the header. The 
  80.            moderator will disagree with many in the echo on the 
  81.            issues involved. His opinion statements should not be 
  82.            construed as "official" unless the header states the message 
  83.            is from the moderator. Messages from "Dale Anderson"
  84.            are his opinions, only, and not "official."
  85.  
  86. COMPLAINTS: Any complaints should be sent to the Echo Moderator
  87.             via NETMAIL.  Any complaint sent in the echo itself,
  88.             either to the Echo Moderator or to the offending party,
  89.             will be considered as off-topic, and not responded to.
  90.             
  91. DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS: In the best of all possible worlds, we'd
  92.         all get along and be able to discuss anything imaginable
  93.         without things getting out of control.  However, we don't
  94.         live on the best of all possible worlds, and those who
  95.         break the rules may look forward to reprimands, formal
  96.         warnings, and banishment from the conference if such is
  97.         determined necessary by the Moderator.  Severity of the
  98.         punishment will be based on the severity of the trans-
  99.         gression.  Discussions of disciplinary actions will be
  100.         limited to NETMAIL and are off-topic in the conference.
