  22. In my never ending quest for new and better PD/Shareware CD-ROMs, I
  23. recently encountered two more that are certainly worthy of a review.
  24. They are the SIMTEL20 MS-DOS Archive and the GARBO CD-ROM, both from
  25. Walnut Creek CD-ROM.  The way these discs were created is indeed
  26. novel--the manufacturer simply took a "snapshot" of two giant
  27. libraries--the SIMTEL20 archive at the US Army Information Systems
  28. Command (White Sands Missle Range, NM) and the GARBO MS-DOS and MAC
  29. archives at the University of Vaasa, Finland.

  31. By getting these archives intact, you benefit by receiving a wide
  32. assortment of programs, utilities, text files and programming tools with
  33. less duplication.  Also, most of programs seem to be the most recent
  34. versions available, making these CDs far more valuable than other ones I
  35. have seen which are often several versions behind in their offerings
  36. (How would you like version 1.0 of a program which is currently up to
  37. version 5.2?).  Since they are ISO-9660 compatible, you should have no
  38. problem accessing them from any standard CD-ROM drive.  Now, on to
  39. specifics:

  41. SIMTEL20: Alas, the mother of all IBM PD/Shareware CD-ROMs!  With 172
  42. (!) directories full of just about any kind of software available (plus
  43. some very useful document files), this ranks as just about the most
  44. extensive collection you are likely to find.  If it exists, it's
  45. probably here somewhere.  The newest version, now in production, will
  46. reportedly have 560MB of data (vs. 430 on the disc I reviewed), more
  47. categories, and file indexes for selected BBS systems such as Opus, RBBS
  48. and PC Board.  Stick this on your BBS and you'll have busy signals for
  49. years!!  Five Stars *****

  51. GARBO: This archive offers 142 (!) directories of IBM, MAC and WINDOWS
  52. software and text files.  250MB of space is devoted to IBM and Windows
  53. programs and 150MB for the Mac. There is a wide assortment of programs
  54. on this disc, including some not found on SIMTEL20.  The directory
  55. structure makes it easy to find programs for each of the three families
  56. of software.  Even though this archive is from Finland, just about
  57. everything is in English, which is good since I didn't want to learn
  58. another language to write this review!  If you are a IBM power user, Mac
  59. fan or Windows addict, this is the disc for you!!  Five Stars *****

  61. I am really impressed with these discs, which are just two of of the
  62. seven currently offered by Walnut Creek Software.  The best part is the
  63. price - only $24.95 each!  That is half of what I paid for the "So Much
  64. Shareware" disc and about 65% of the cost of the Phoenix disc.  Each
  65. disc offers descriptions in each directory and the SIMTEL20 disc also
  66. offers a comprehensive index in the root directory.

  68. You will need ARC, ZIP, ZOO and LZH unzipping tools to get to the
  69. programs on these discs (The latter format is used on GARBO).  They are
  70. provided on the SIMTEL20 disc.  A good DOS SHELL program will also come
  71. in handy since these discs don't have a software browse/decompression
  72. engine (which would have been a nice touch).  The PC Tools 7.1 shell
  73. works especially well since it allows you to view file contents
  74. (including all the archive formats mentioned above) and copy programs
  75. easy.  PC Tools' Filefind utility is also a life saver when searching
  76. for a certain program.  Even an antique like Dave Rand's wonderful
  77. public domain NSWP (Newsweep) program worked great.  My DOS 4.01 choked
  78. on the SIMTEL20 disc--it said that there were just too many files!

  80. There are more goodies on the way from Walnut Creek which deserve a
  81. mention. A new Desktop Library CD-ROM is in the works which I can't wait
  82. to see ($39.95 - available June 1, 1992).  It includes the complete
  83. works of Shakespeare, Chaucer, Virgil, Dante and Milton plus books by
  84. Whitman, Crane, Melville, Poe, Tolstoy, Verne, Dickens, Doyle and other
  85. goodies like the 1991 CIA World Fact Book (which I bought recently for
  86. $29 at discount), Supreme Court decisions, dictionaries, thesaruses and
  87. word lists.  It looks like it may cover the ground of several CD-ROMs
  88. (like the pricey Library of the Future and Microsoft Bookshelf) at a
  89. bargain price.  A GIF CD-ROM (yes!) is also reportedly in the works.
  90. Walnut Creek is putting out some great stuff at rock bottom prices!!
