  12. Those looking through the latest Walnut Creek Catalog (which is pretty
  13. spiffy looking, by the way, especially when compared to past issues) may
  14. have noticed the Libris Brittania CD-ROM (correct spelling).  As it
  15. costs more than double the price of other popular discs such as
  16. SIMTEL20, Garbo and CICA, you may have wondered: "What's the Big Deal?"
  17. Libris Brittania, according to the Walnut Creek catalog is: "from the
  18. best British shareware library, over 600 megabytes of superb public
  19. domain and shareware for the IBM-PC."  Hmmmm.... Let's see if LB lives
  20. up to the hype.

  22. After giving it a spin, I was impressed with the selection and diversity
  23. of the software on the disc.  In fact, I found it to be quite similar to
  24. the software libraries that you can buy at a computer show or swap meet
  25. for $3-5 a disc.  Unlike SIMTEL, the disc contains mostly shareware with
  26. very little in the way of escoterica or exotica.  The disc is divided
  27. into directories by category.  The only down side is that the zip files
  28. are identified by a number (presumably corresponding to a disk number).
  29. Fortunately, each directory has a text file containing a description of
  30. its contents.  Also, the disc comes with a well organized book which
  31. describes each file in detail.  Categories include: Business Software,
  32. Communications, Database Systems, Desktop Publishing, Education,
  33. Electronics, Games, Graphics, Hobbies/Activities, Programming, Religion,
  34. Scientific, Utilities, Windows Support, Word Processing/Editing and much
  35. more.  Also, unlike many shareware CDs, the latest versions of each
  36. program seem to be included.

  38. Even though the disc may seem a bit pricey (at least by Walnut Creek
  39. standards), it is a bargain considering that its is the equivalent of
  40. at least 3500 5.25" double-density floppies.  If purchased at computer
  41. show prices, that stack of floppies would cost you over $10,000.  So,
  42. to get access to all those programs (and we are talking about *access*,
  43. since most of the discs are shareware and require that a registration
  44. fee be paid), you would have to lay out a bunch of cash and find a
  45. convenient place to store 3500 floppies!
