Walnut Creek CD-ROM's
CICA Windows CD-ROM
July 1992 Edition
Reviewed by Tony Thomas
Windows lovers often have a hard time getting hold of vital Windows
information, resources and device drivers. The CICA (Center for
Innovative Computing Applications) Windows archive at Indiana University
is one of the best repositories of Windows applications, utilities and
resources available. Walnut Creek Software, in their fine tradition of
making great archives available on CD-ROM, distributes the CICA Windows
archives on a quarterly basis on disc.
The archives are divided into 15 categories:
Demos
Desktop
Drivers
Fonts
Games
Icons
Misc
Programmer
Supplemental Development Libraries
Sounds
Toolbook
Utilities
WinWord
Word Perfect for Windows
Windows Resource Kit
With this layout, it is generally easy to find what you are looking for.
I wish that the Desktop and Utilities directories were divided into
subcategories by function, though.
There are numerous gems on this disk, like Reversi (a classic Windows
game) and MS Executive (a fast and easy to use file
manager)--applications available in earlier versions of Windows, but
omitted in v 3.1. Hard to find drivers (like MS CD-ROM Extensions and
numerous video and printer drivers) are also on this disk. Don't count
on getting the very latest versions of these drivers, however. There
seems to be a considerable lag between their release and their inclusion
in major archives like CICA.
ATM and Truetype fontmongers will find megabytes of new fonts to add to
their collections. Programmers will find utilities, documentation and
source code for Borland C++, Turbo Pascal, Visual Basic and more. An
array of desktop applications and utilities is also included, but don't
expect the variety or plentitude that you'll find on a DOS shareware
disk. The Windows shareware market is still in its infancy. A nice
collection of games is also on the disc, including Checkers, Chess,
Poker, Pong, Blackjack, Tetris, Backgammon and much more. The Windows
Resource Kit is a valuable addition since it provides a wealth of
undocumented or underdocumented information about Windows.
My main complaint with the CICA arhive disc is that it only weighs in at
a a bit over 140 megabytes--about a quarter of the capacity of the
CD-ROM. Perhaps Walnut Creek should consider adding the Windows
portions of the SIMTEL20 and Garbo discs to their CICA Windows disc to
fill the empty space and add a bit more variety. Considering its low
price and what you get, I think that the CICA archive would be a
valuable addition to any Windows lover's CD-ROM library.
