I have ordered a Toshiba XM-3401B (internal model) CD-ROM drive. I
haven't received it yet, but I got a glossy piece of paper with a
photograph of the drive on one side and some technical details on the
other. Questions about these details are often posed here, so I
thought I would take the trouble to type them in and post them ...

Some other features listed in the text on the paper are, and I quote,
"CD-DA transfer through SCSI bus"
"Use of 12 cm and 8 cm CD's"
"Software volume control (L/R channel independent)"
"Closed enclosure" [eh?]
"Emergency eject for caddy"
"Media removal prevent function"
"High MTBF 50,000 power-on hours"
"Multi-media PC compliant" [obviously!]
"Kodak Photo CD compliant (multisession)"
"With all of the above features and more you have the ability to read
CD's for CD-ROM XA, CD-DA, CD-I, CD-I bridge plus headphone and line
out connector for audio."
I accept no responsibility for any typos.
OK, now I have some questions.
CD-DA means CD digital audio, right? The stuff that's found on
ordinary music CD's that you buy in record stores?
And "CD-DA transfer through SCSI bus" means that you could use the
3401 to read CD-DA data as raw binary data? (Save it to the hard
disk and convert it to a .WAV file?)
I understand that I may have some problems with drivers for the thing
when I connect it to my Adaptec AHA-1742A SCSI controller. Any info
on this would be greatly appreciated. Is it Toshiba or Adaptec that
is supposed to (is likely to?) release a driver for this setup?
So far I have ordered one CD-ROM: the Windows NT SDK beta. What are
the chances that I'll get anywhere with this?
