Actually, I've signed up to a few Amiga related listservs....but there is=
=20
no activity on them! Actually you're better off going to usenet and=20
entering the Amiga discussion groups there. There is plenty of activity=20
on those.

Most external modems are compatible with any computer with a serial port.=

However the software that comes with them is often only for one computer=20

CP/M does work on the CMD HD. You have to create a CP/M format partition and
copy the system over from the original disks. The HD also came with some CP/M
utilities so you can change partitions on the HD while running CP/M.

Subject: GIF viewer within a term prg
Why couldn't a GIF viewer be built into a simple term program? This
viewer (take vgif, for example) could read the GIF data directly from
the modem. I assume this would work since I can't see why vgif would
prefer data read off of a disk to data coming in through a modem.
It seems like the only thing that would have to happen is that vgif
would have to be modified to "see" the data in this way.
There must be some OBVIOUS reson this cannot be done, because if it
COULD I am certain that someone else would have already done it. :-)
Wadya think, sirs?

your explanations! :-)

There are GIF viewers built into term programs on higher-powered
machines, but it would be tough to do on a C64. Keep in mind that
2400bps is already pushing the limits of the standard 64 hardware (the
CPU is mostly devoted to servicing the user port.) Now you want it to
perform GIF decompression (not a terribly complicated algorithm, but
requires some computation nonetheless), and write to the screen
(bitmap graphics on the 64 require quite a bit of bit twiddling.)
Plus, this adds to the code required for the term program, thus
likely decreasing any space reserved for a scrollback buffer.
It might be possible on a 128, or on a 64 with a Swiftlink or
equivalent, but as I own neither, I can't speculate :)

DavesTerm128, which Loadstar put out has a GIF viewer in it, but it
reads it from disk. It also, BTW --- creates GIFs from other Commodore
format files.
The two major downfalls of DavesTerm is that it doesn't allow high speed
modems, and a real downfall from the point of view of a CMD device owner
is that it doesn't allow for any "manual" DOS commands to be sent.

Err... <grin> ... uh... does the opinion of a woman count? ;-)

With Dave's Term you have to download the file first before you can view
it, but you don't have to go offline to do so.
