- Turn off XON/XOFF handshaking. It is known to cause problems with MNP. If at
- all possible, you should CTS/RTS handshaking with MNP modems, though the only
- program I know that is capable of that is Dialogue 128.

- Rose,
-
- Modems running MNP take a bit more time when they first connect, before they
- actually begin talking with a host modem. This is because the two modems are
- trying to reach an understanding as to which protocol they both will use.
-
- As it applies to the HHH prob, I'd suggest a slight delay before sending out
- the HHH. I usually have my script wait one *and* one-half (1 1/2) seconds
- before sending out the HHH, or you might have it wait for a "CONNECT 9600", or
- whatever, before transmitting the HHH.

- I have noticed that when using MNP, data compression MUST be enabled for GEnie
- to let you log on correctly. The modem should be set to reliable mode with
- data compression ON. Then when you call, watch the CD (carrier detect) light
- on the modem... As soon as CD is detected, type the hhh characters. You
- should get the U#= prompt after that.
-
- Even though data compression doesn't improve things much, it still has to be
- enabled for the logon sequence to operate correctly.

- Rose,
-
- Everytime Dialogue dials GEnie, the Supra sets itself to MNP4.
-
- When I want to download with Dialogue, I usually enter an M625;3, to get to
- the Commodore 64/128 Library. I then select the option to download files, and
- enter all the file numbers or names, seperated by comas, and wait for Genie to
- tell me it is ready to send its batch of files.
-
- I then press Comkey D, run/stop, and Dialogue proceeds to download the batch
- of files with its y-modem.
-
- Are you doing something different? :)

- Beginning with the August 1993 issue, BBS Callers Digest will have a Commodore
- computing column called "Commodore Connections". I've watched this magazine

- A couple of quick, and hopefully non-critical questions about this... First,
- where can somebody get a copy of BBS Callers Digest. Is it available in most
- book stores, or mainly subscriptions, or is it in text format? Second, it has
- been my experience that when somebody advertises as having "Commodore
- Support", it usually means Amigas. Is this for sure 8-bits, or just all
- Commies. Tanks...er thanks

- Waldensoftware stores carry BBS Callers Digest, and most bookstores that
- carry computer magazines. It can be ordered from the magazine (you know the
- standard subscription stuff...) Let me get the info out for you.
-
- 1 yr is $30 -- you can call 1-800-822-0437 8am-4pm EST Mon-Fri and charge
- it to your Visa or Mastercard.
-
- The address is: BBS Callers Digest
- 701 Stokes Rd.
- Medford, MJ 08055
-
- Naturally, they have their own BBS, which the number is:
- 1-609-235-5297 - it's an IBM PCBoard BBS called "The Live Wire".
-
- In answer to the question of whether it's just Amiga support,
- the column I write is called Commodore Connections, and it is strictly
- C64/128 stuff, geared towards beginning and intermediate BBS Callers.
- I'm very pleased to be associated with this magazine, because they are
- not in anyway "computer snobs". They also have a MAC column, a senior
- citizens column, and I have seen Amiga columns. They are really trying to
- cover all computer types and all types of BBS callers.

- The following article was taken from the SUNDAY PARADE:
-
- HOT NEWS ON THE INTERNET
-
- Virtually anyone who has logged onto the Internet knows that the hottest
- topics for bulletin boards have to do with sex.
- The bulletin board most used is the rules for new users called
- 'news.announce.newusers', which drew 800,00 readers in a recent month. The
- next most popular bulletin board or newsgroup is the 'alt.sex.stories'.
- Half a million Internet users logged onto that one to write, read or
- download onto their home computers explicit stories about every aspect of sex
- imaginable, according to a newgroup list compiled by Digital Equipment Corp.
- The next most popular category was found by calling up
- 'alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.natch': In this bulletin board, 450,000 readers
- requested the chance to scan or download explicit images. Next on the list was
- 'alt.sex', a discusion group in which people talk about sexual
- issues(440,000). And some 420,000 readers logged onto the 'news.answers'
- bulletin board to learn about frequently asked questions. (Newcomers who ask
- these questions irritate the old timers, who will send them "flames" -
- messages in all capital letters meant as shouts that mean: "Don't waste out
- time!"). Another 380,000 readers wanted jokes through rec.humor.funny, and
- 370,000 wanted more sex stories via 'rec.arts.erotica', which offers literary
- and less graphic fare.
-
- ......PERVERTS!!! - That's was taken from the article :)

- Interesting note: The local board I use to access the newsgroups just dropped
- all the alt.sex and .binaries groups to ward off any future prosecution. It
- appears that, as the Internet grows, more attention is being drawn to such
- areas which can be accessed by someone of ANY AGE... I'm betting there'll be
- lawsuits flying before long.

- When saving the setup, did you have your User device and Desterm Device
- set the same? (the drive the Desterm disk is in) If not this could be your
- problem.
-
- When you save the setup, the 1st window you should see appear is
- FILENAME:des.setup. The next window will say saving BUT NO drive activity.
- The system will see that your replacing the same file name and a window
- will appear asking you to choose either DON'T REPLACE or REPLACE FILE.
- Choose replace file and then you will see drive activity.
-
- Desterm is not crippleware.
- BTW, you will want to choose ASCII for term emulation, not ANSI.

- 12Paws:

-
- Yes, but you aren't going to encounter many here on GEnie, and ANSI
- emulation causes a problem with the delete key. Remember that that
- function sends a sequence of characters to the remote to cause a
- backspace/delete, whereas GEnie, and any non-ANSI board, will require
- only 1 character. What you should do is set up a config file for GEnie
- which is ASCII mode, and an ANSI setup for those boards you call that
- support ANSI graphics.
-
- 12> the carrier detect in the status line is on before I autodial
- 12> and off when I connect
-
- Your modem probably defaults to sensing carrier all the time. You need
- to send the command that forces it to follow the true state of carrier.
- The command is usually something like 'at &c1'. What may also be the
- ccase, tho I don't use Dialogue so I don't know, is that Dialogue may
- need you to tell it if the mask bit is 'on' or 'off'... it may also be
- labelled as 'inverted' or something similar. This would also cause what
- you describe... namely sensing carrier where there is none. If you are
- using a 1670, this is possible... the 1670 recognizes a different bit
- state in terms of carrier detect.... not sure if it expects it to be on
- or off when carrier is present, but whichever, it is exactly the opposite
- of 'Hayes compatible' modems.
