- Oh, a bunch of different ones. For example one program helps you reorganize
- your database. Another one helps you to print reports. (There is a report
- generator in Superbase, but my program has features it doesn't have.)
-
- I want to see if there is any interest so that I write what people are
- interested in. I was going to ook at the Superbase programs I have written
- for myself and see if I could spruce them up so other people could use them.
- (Programmer's programs, ya know ;) ) For example, the program that helps with
- reorganization had been a 10 line program. 9 of the 10 lines had been remarks!
- The 10th line contained code I had to modify. I thought, why not make it
- automatically ask the user for everything? Now it is about a 6k program.
- That's not including the menus which are saved on disk as SEQ files instead of
- the program code. This saves memory. I put a lot of work into it, but it is
- kind of silly if no one is interested in Superbase programs.

- I do use superbase programs alot. I am also very familiar with superbase
- programs and would be very interested in seeing/trying the things that you are
- working on. I use superbase to manage my inventory, keep the books. for my
- business. I also have put it to use for design functions. (A cad d program is
- really just a data base and superbase is an excellent database). But of course
- it has no capabilities for ouputting visual images.
-
- Which is the best place to post superbase messages. i hate to see them become
- scattered all over the board.

- I use Superbase to keep track of music albums, disk directories,
- addresses, etc. I've written many support programs but I want to combine
- as many of them as I can. I also want to make them so anyone can use them
- no matter what type of database they have. (Also, it seems as a Superbase
- programmer that I constantly re-write the same program for different
- databases. If it was generic, it would only have to be written once.)
-
- Do you have any programs you want someone else to try out? I'll have to
- get my program together and send it to you. I don't think I've looked at
- it since the last beta tester went over it.
-
- Did you know that the Amiga version of Superbase allows you to display
- graphics? I don't think it can draw, but then I only have Personal 2. (If
- anyone knows how to get Professional 4, let me know.)
-
- About where to post... I suppose a sysop should answer that. The reason I
- started this message when there was a post in the CMD area is the one in
- that area is for the Superbase program itself. This post is for programs
- that run under Superbase. There is another post in this area that seems it
- could go with the post in CMD's area. (ie general Superbase question)
- Also, I kinda felt the need for one here because people will look in
- 64/128 software for info on a program. If they don't know that CMD sells
- Superbase, they will never look in that area.

- LOL! Where to put the Superbase topic? Well, there is one in CMD's
- category since CMD distributes the program. Brenda, you started this
- topic to see if there was any interest in the Superbase programs you
- designed. Now if we get into programming examples for Superbase, well
- that belongs in category #5. Yeah, no 1 good general purpose place to
- put it ;)
-
- Brenda, you mentioned it might be kinda silly to upload your Superbase
- programs if nobody shows an interest. I don't think it would be silly.
- After all, there may be many more like me who have Superbase, but never
- did anything with it. Seeing some of your, or anybody else's, stuff for
- Superbase might get them to try it out. Some of those who *do* use
- Superbase may find possiblities they never dreamed of until they saw
- programming examples done by others. Who knows? ;D

- Yeah, I started the topic to see if there was interest in Superbase
- programs. I see the post in the CMD area as a bit more generic. ie: How
- much does it cost? etc type questions. The reason I started this one was
- because I didn't feel it was appropriate for the CMD area if I was talking
- about programs that I wrote. I did put a reply about programming there and
- felt uncomfortable with it. That's why I started this one. But now it
- seems that the one in the CMD is about to break into programming examples.
- If you want to move it to the Programming area, or tack it on here, it
- would be ok. (I don't understand why people seem to be against new posts
- on GEnie. They say it is ok to start a new topic but it seems to bother
- users when you do. I know you were joking, but its one of my biggest
- gripes about GEnie. Getting off of soap box now :) )
-
- I did not mean it would be silly to upload the programs if no one showed
- interest. I meant that it would be silly to WRITE them in the first place.
- My programs are "programmer's programs" and would require extensive work
- to make them suitable for an end-user. Why waste my time making them
- "finished" if I'm the only one that will end up using them? But you made
- some good points.
-
- Maybe Superbase is too hard for people to set up the first time? Would
- people be interested in "already set up" databases? Or articles on how to
- use Superbase?

- Brenda, I thought you meant your Superbase programs were "already set up"
- programs. Now I know what you mean about 'writing' them ;) Some databases
- already to use might be of use to those first time users, though. After
- looking through the Superbase manual when I purchased my copy I came away
- with the attitude "someday when I have more time". It still sits in the
- box ;>
-
- I guess we can keep the programming tips in the Superbase topic over in
- CMD's category. They were already started there to begin with. Good as
- place as any. Besides that topic has been there for long enough most users
- here are familiar with that one.
-
- Oh, another reason I never got back to trying out Superbase was because
- the initial reason I bought it was to set up a Genealogical database, but
- shortly after got a hold of a copy of Lineages.

- Good thing I posted this. Sounds like I am working in the wrong directio set
- up their applications in the first place.
-
- I'd like to keep this post here, because I really don't feel it is pro be one
- post to one general topic. On every other system I have been on, users start
- their own posts. They don't just chain on to other people's.)
-
- I don't know if I have heard of Lineages or not. Was it reviewed in TC 128/64?
-
- I set up the album database for my sister. I have never used it myself.be
- indexed by. In case you don't know, the Superbase manual tells you to s to use
- a code, such as Joe/01. Fine. But what do you do six months late program and
- entered into the "name" field as "Billy Joel". (My sister did not like last
- name first :) )
-
- By the way, when I mentioned above that Superbase tells you to try to use
- unique fields... anytime the Superbase manual gently hints that you shouldn't
- do something, DON'T DO IT!
-
- I hadn't been thinking about finishing up the album program anytime in thh all
- of my programs and finish each one.
-
- Right now, I am trying to decide how to force the "reorganize your database"
- program into the 64 version. It is too big, there is not enough memory in the
- 64.
-
- >> Would certainly be great to have a *good* database for this and possibly my

-
- What do you mean by a "good database"? What fields (or ?) should it have?
-
- I don't know what a tax deductible expense database would entail. Wouldn't a
- financial program work better?

- Super base is no faster or slower that anyother database for searches on a
- monolithic file. The power of Superbase is in its linking and programming
- capabilities.
-
- If I were to design a database for record albums, I would create a database
- called Music. Within the database I would create files called Albums,
- composers, preformers and selections. This would allow for a keyfield search
- on any criterian I choose. Individual records withing each file would contain
- the keyfield information linking it back to the other files so that a complete
- record could be created. This is a lot of work, but it would allow a serch
- for any item happen as fast for a database of 200 albums as it would for a
- database of 10,000 albums. A structure such as this also reduces redundancy of
- data. Once a composer has been entered into the database, you would simply be
- adding new key fifield information to his or her existing record. Of course
- all information would need to be entered and retreived under program control.
-
- Just a note on the above post. "joe/01" will cause problems as a data in a
- superbase filed because the "/" charqcter is a command character within
- superbase and should never be part of the field information.
-
- It is pleasant to see show much suberbase discussion.

- Did someone ask if Superbase was fast or slow? I must have missed it. I've
- never used another database, so I wouldn't know.
-
- >>The power of Superbase is in its linking and programmng capabilities.
-
- I agree... I have Superbase on the Amiga. I only have Personal 2, which
- doesn't have a programming language. I'm dying to get Professional 4, that
- does have one. A programming language makes a database more flexible. You
- can make it do things more easily. This does not mean you have to be a
- programmer either. Simple commands can be stored and used like you would
- use a macro on another program.
-
- Files within database... my album database is set up as one file. My
- sister only needs to search by performer. There is no room fo
- "selections". (Of course this could be added.) My feeling is, if you are
- going to have thousands of records and want to search them on several
- different fields, get the Amiga or IBM version of Superbase. If you are
- not a programmer, it will be very hard for you to do. Also, it is going to
- quickly run out of room on a 1541 drive. If my sister listed all that data
- on 1,000 albums, she'd need a RAMLink or HD. For me personally, I don't
- feel the need to list each criteria seperately... if you give me a name, I
- can * remember * all the albums and the song titles on each :> (Must be
- wierd, eh?)
-
- On your "Music" database example, I would not make each record in the file
- be partial information. I would have one record contain all the
- information. Your other files would link back to this record. This would
- greatly speed the process. This would mean if you were trying to look up
- album titles, you would go to the "albums" file. Look up your album, and
- with ONE lik, you can have full data. Yes, you can call this full record
- "redundancy of data", but boy will it speed things up and fix a ton of
- headaches!
-
- Yes, making a file for each thing you want to search on will make
- Superbase faster. That is because it is only fast on the key field. You
- can only have one key field per file. To get more than one, you must use
- more than one file. (I'm trying to help the beginners out a little. I'm
- sure this is way over lots of people's heads.)
-
- >>A structure such as this also reduces redundancy of data.
-
- I don't agree with this statement. If you put all your data in one file,
- your key is only there once. To use several files, you must repeat the key
- field in each file. (It would be a "regular" field in the other files.)
- But you must weigh the advantages with the disadvantages. Like you said,
- you can only search quickly on one field.
-
- Using multiple files also causes other problems. I talked about one of the
- problems earlier. Another problem is that this approach requires advanced
- BASIC programming skills. To do it without programming would leave the
- user running and screaming :) Most people probably don't want to program.
- I know that's hard for us Superbase programmers to believe :) The other
- users that have responded haven't even set up a database yet, let alone
- wrote programs to control one.
-
- >>Of course all information would need to be entered and retreived under
- program control.
-
- I know that you probably know the things I am talking about. I'm just
- trying to clarify a little for the beginners. I don't think its going to
- help much, cause its starting in the middle instead of the beginning :)
-
- >>Just a note on the above post. "joe/01" will cause problems as a
- data in a superbase filed because the "/" charqcter is a command
- character within superbase and should never be part of the field
- information.
-
- Oops, you are correct. But check R-22 in the 128 manual. I used their
- example! (Well, it was with the name Smith, but the logic is the same.) By
- the way, you shouldn't use the characters
-
- = # * > < / &
-
- Superbase uses them in its record matching function. When it sees them in
- a field, it can't tell whether these characters are data or commands.
-
- Brenda
- ps: I just marked the "/" as yet another error in the SB manual
- pps: wrote this before I saw the last response. 64 or 128, Mike?
- W.Ove told me in mail he was not interested in reorganizing. I don't know
- if that just meant his own personal database or he meant not for beta testing
- either.
- Here is a question for y'all... on a 64 version, would you rather have to
- copy files to make my program run to both disk drives (if using two drives)
- or would you rather wait while the program loaded in variables? The program
- is too big to fit in the 64's memory.
