-
- Yeah, I know.

- EB>> Adding the time I have spent on BellTerm, Catalog, PCG Term...
-
- Wow, I never used most of those. I downloaded Catalog, but never
- un-archieved it :/
-
- EB>> if we boycott a product on the basis of who sells it, it is not the

-
- Well, I am feeling really terrible about the whole thing. I want to
- purchase RTCM. It's an excellent program. I want to support you. But to do
- that, I have to support JBEE. Should I do that after how he treated me?
- (that's a rhetorical question) I am trying to decide what to do. Right
- now, I am having modem problems as well as trying to find a new term to
- use. I do not want to use RTCM without paying for it if it is unfair to
- you. If RTCM v2.02 was shareware, and just was not properly labeled (IMO),
- I still should pay if I am going to use it. I am certainly not going to
- hold you to something like... "Well, I got it unlabeled, therefore I don't
- have to pay." If you simply MEANT for it to be shareware, that is enough
- for me. I know that you are stuck right in the middle. That's not fair. So
- I really, truely, do not know what to do. If this paragraph seems to be
- going around in circles, that's because that is what I am doing :/ No
- matter what I do, someone is going to be hurt.
-
- EB>> I have always found it VERY distasteful when I see posts and doc
- files FILLED with whining (IMO) about people who use programs but don't
- pay for them.
-
- That's Steve Hudgik's position in his book. He says authors should help
- unregistered users, not scream at them to register first. His basic
- position is that if users don't pay for programs, it is not the user's
- fault, its the programmer's fault. If the programmer does not get $, he is
- not MARKETING himself properly. If you go into the HOSB, or read Steve's
- book, the main emphasis is not on programming, it is on marketing. (BTW,
- the ASP is a private area. But there is another area for non-ASP shareware
- authors.)
-
- EB>> I don't want to get caught up in that. I don't hold it against people
- who use my program and don't register....
-
- Well, in your case, all it would have taken to have gotten you more $ than
- you got on 2.02 would have been to have a "This program is shareware. Send
- $20 to Ed at ---". They ain't gonna send $ if you don't tell them to :D
-
- For the record, I still don't believe I was using a shareware program and
- not registering. If it's not labeled, then the user doesn't know.
-
- EB>> I simply love to program my machine.

- Hi ED
- I have been using 3.0, and except for that one weird thing awhile back
- its been going good. Today I just started using using some of the other mods
- for it besides the stuff for hosting. I am using the copier overlay and the
- archiver. I made a profiles for each but when I load the 2nd one it does not
- effect any of the selected drives. Here is what I am trying to do
-
- 1. using the copier overlay to copy from a 1571 to my
- Ramlink, the 81 is device 19,RL is device 16 going
- to partiton number 2,which is 81 partition.
-
- 2. Using the Archiver overlay to go from the Ramlink
- Partition #2 to my cmd hd partiton number 19 using
- the parallel cable.
-
- What happens is when I switch overlays it uses the previsouly selected drive
- number for source and target,I tried to load the profile before and after
- loading the next overlay that I want to use.
-
- System configuartion:
-
- #8 cmd hd #9 1571 #10 fd-2000 #16 Ramlink
-
- I also have a SL installed connected to a 14,400 modem with a REU install and
- enabled, using port expander. Ramdos is being used and the Ramdisk is enabled.
-
- Is this a known problem,is it being changed in the release you are working on
- now, or operator error? I have been awaitng to test out your lasted release
- but I didn't want to switch untill you finished ironing things out again,
- because I like using rtcm for hosting.

- When you set your drive/device/path stuff in any overlay, that is the

- target. Any such setting made anywhere in RTCM changes that settting for

- is not getting its settings implemented, are you saving changes to that

-
- GN> is it being chaged in the release you are working on now
-
- I am not working on any changes to the device settings in any of the
- overlays. What I am working on is hardware flow control... have it
- pretty well in hand w/the exception of autosaves, tho it works for me
- even there on GEnie... it is just RBBS for now that is causing me
- problems.
-
- I have started work on 3.02. The changes to it are the flow control, as
- I just mentioned, the editing of the ALT menu will be gone too. It is
- duplicated in the defaults menu and I needed the memory. There are some
- new functions added to the pulldown menu now that I have room to add
- them. The dialer routines have been totally rewritten and I'm quite
- happy with them... this also affects the fingertip overlay. I'm having
- some troubles with uploads, tho I hope to find a modem setting that will
- fix that... I think I might have, but I want to concentrate on this
- flow control because I won't have the HS modem too much longer I'm
- afraid....
-
- For Cam, I put in a new switch to turn on and off the 'doorbell' that
- rings when someone enters a room. This will allow you to keep the
- bell on but the greeter off if you wish.
-
- For R.KIRK, I added code to make the scroll key options changeable in
- the buffer viewer. This will be set in defaults... haven't coded the
- latter part of that yet.
-
- I also added a 'modem reset' string to the defaults file as part of the
- new dialer routine which will also need code in defaults and bootset
- to be adjusted.
-
- Am adding a bell or whistle here and there too... o, and added a feature
- that records corrupted files when 'verifying' archives. I wasn't happy
- that rtcm went thru the archive so fast that if bad archives were found
- that might have been missed. Now it will report those at the end of the
- process...
-
- Also removed the prompt from DataMover that GEnie removed from it's
- process...
-
- Also added a menu selection to allow execution of 'superscripts' using
- the RTCM script language (to the autolog menu). You won't be able to
- dial using this technique, but you will be able to construct some
- VERY powerful scripts otherwise if you like.
-
- Did a logon script that navigates the sprintnet logon sequence. It
- now works fine.
-
- I guess if there are any requests/suggestions, now would be a good time
- to make them known.

- startup rtcm loading dflt.71torl loading copier overlay-do my thing loading

-
- That has already been added as a matter of fact... tho it is only
- operative for the string that gets sent when carrier is detected...
- that is, the 'hhhhh' in the case of GEnie... and it is the ',' character.
-
- The function of RTCM and the devices seems to be working correctly for
- you Greg.... and you are just expecting it to do something it is not
- coded to do... one thing... your source device stuff is not saved in the
- dflt. file anywhere.
-
- Let's see if this answers your question....
-
- If you set copier for source 9,1 target 16,1, do your copying, then load
- archiver, your source and target will still be the same. If you load
- dlft.71torl which changes the target to 10,0, your devices should be
- source 9,1 target 10,0. Does that answer your question? Unless I am
- really missing the intent of your question, I'm satisfied that rtcm
- works as it should wrt the device numbers and the overlays and dflt.
- files.
-
- RK: The dialer has been completely rewritten. I do think it will

- Ed,
- Some further light on the situation reported elsewhere:
-
- Bottom line, there needs to be a BRIEF pause after recognizing the
- CONNECT message before sending HHH. If it is sent too quickly, the host
- really isn't ready yet.
-
- The "connect" message is actually coming from the users modem. Depending on
- how the modem itself is configured, this message MAY be delayed for a
- significant period after the actual connection is made. This is
- particularly the case with error correcting modems which have been set up
- to report a whole series of connection information, such as LAP/M, etc.
-
- It SEEMS that the timing on some nodes is more critical than on
- others, and those messages can throw off the timing of the comm program
- sufficiently a that the response from the program may be outside the window
- where the node is willing to accept it.

- No RK. I didn't... I have to try it out myself then. Shouldn't be cuz I did
- not change anything with it. That is what can make things so frustrating....
- and programmer so reluctant to make changes. I'll check it out myself between
- now and the end of the weekend.

- Dick: I know you are going to hate hearing this, but I tried today w/3.01 and
- the REU at 2400 and it worked perfectly... never lost a byte. I used a disk
- Nate O'Neil sent me with that version on it, so it was not even my setup... it
- was Nate's.
-
- I first loaded a file and saved it to bank 0. Then I loaded another one and
- saved it to bank 1. Then I checked both and they were ok. Then I logged onto
- FIDO and let 'er rip.... I downloaded 2.5 buffers... the last 2 days worth of
- info... my buffer is set to auto-save when full.
-
- Now I need more details about what you have set up and just how it is that you
- lost what you lost...
-
-
- Nate: I was able to load and execute the stuff you sent me just fine.. as
- mentioned above I used it to test the DMA autosaves. What this suggests to me
- is that the 'sniff' routine seems not to be resetting your VDC after the test.
- It tests for the 64K vdc... I'm reassembling the program now to fix something
- I did not like about control character stripping... I put in an explicit set
- of bank 15 prior to the call of the reset code. I've had this be a problem
- before I seem to remember... for some reason, it allows the call to be made
- and return ok, but never does the operation. If that is what is happening, it
- *might* explain why your VDC never gets reset with its original values. Let
- me know if the new disk does the same thing, ok! If it does, we'll have to
- disable that test with a poke and try some other tests. That *may* be an easy
- test due to where it happens... in install.obj, which is a small setup file.

- I can't believed V3.01 worked OK for you. You said you tried it in Autosave
- mode which suggests you didn't do what I did. In anycase I saved four buffers
- full of messages which were supposed to go to my REU banks 0-3.
-
- What I got was about a third of the last buffer in every bank of the REU when
- I tried to read them by selecting CTR I via V3.1. When I loaded V2 and tried
- reading the banks I got about a third of what was my original 1st buffer.
-
- I took your brand new V3.01 - loaded and ran it - selected BOOT.OVRL and
- choose 'D' then '3'. Line 135 of the resulting MY.BOOT program comes out - 135
- IO%=68("D") which gives me a syntex error when I try to run it. Changing the
- 68 to ASC gets it going.
-
- When I then run MY.BOOT the 'D' comes up and is selected automatically but
- then a '7' comes up and I change it to a '3' via my keyboard. My script then
- runs- it calls GENIE, logs on, goes to the Roundtables I have programed it to
- do and saves the messages. As the buffer fills it acts as if it use to when
- saving the buffer to the REU banks.
-
- I downloaded the version from the GENIE library and got the same result
- exactly. IN your test did you do the buffer save to disk or REU bank?
-
- Why does it always happen to me?

- My last message was for you E.G. - dumb me forgot the address I see. Its
- probably something as simple I did incorrectly with V3.1

- I just uploaded a number of small files to the library as tests. They
- can be deleted. I was testing a new version of DataMover to be released
- with 3.02. This version allows you to upload your files from any drive
- on your system. Instead of typing in the names in your batches, you will
- point and click to select them now and you can change drive/path settings
- each time. I wasn't going to do this, but the way I did it kind of
- overcame my objections.
-
- I have to test this at 14.4... my tests right now were at 2400... had to
- make sure when it wasn't working that it was my code and not something to
- do with the driver.

- RK: You were posting while I was posting that last message...
-
- RK> you tried it in Autosave mode which suggests you didn't do what
- RK> I did. In anycase I saved four buffers full of messages which
- RK> were supposed to go to my REU banks 0-3
-
- I said I first did the cTRL-I and CTRl-O to make sure the DMA code was
- still ok... it was. I then called a FIDO board and let it run... it
- autosaved twice and I purged the third buffer to empty it. It worked
- just fine tho.
-
- RK> Line 135 of the resulting MY.BOOT program comes out - 135
- RK> IO%=68("D") which gives me a syntex error when I try to run
- RK> it. Changing the 68 to ASC gets it going
-
- I'll have to take a look at that. You are right... it should either be
- io%=68: or io% = asc("d"). Either one will work. It looks like what
- you posted is a corruption by BOOTSET. I'll look into that immed.
-
- RK> IN your test did you do the buffer save to disk or REU bank?
-
- To rEU bank RK... my tests before your post were exclusively to disk.
- I never did anything at all to the dma code, which is why I was surprised
- you had a problem. You do seem to be a lightning bolt when it comes to
- troubles w/the REU and RTCM.
-
- Do you have another bbs you can call to test on? Somewhere other than
- GEnie? In my tests, the autosave happened so fast I was concerned that
- it did not work. I can see why you prefer dma. but mine did work.

- RK:
- I did a test on BOOTSET, specifying reu and dma... here is what I got...
-
- I just went to find the test boot file I created and I must have deleted
- it during the general housecleaning I've been doing on my disks....
- anyway, I got 'io%=68:rem.....' where '.....' is the rest of the line,
- which is just comment data. At any rate, the results were ok for me.
- asc("d") is
- *8,asc("d") is 68.
-
- I may need to see the boot you created as it was created. also, just for
- curiosity's sake, what page do you have your autosave set at. Ideally,
- for DmA, it should be set at the maximum setting.
-
- another test you might try, offline, is to load a buffer and do the ^o to
- save it, then load another, and do ^o again to another bank, etc. then
- load them back in and see if they are the same as what you saved. The
- routines you will be testing are the ones autosave uses. This is not
- 100% the same as autosave only in that you are not online and not
- autosaving, but the routines that do the stashing and fetching are
- exactly the same.
-
- btw, in 3.02, I put in code to allow you to select different key
- presses to scroll the buffer up and down. those are the only two you can
- change, but I did try to address your concern about that.

-
- You Said:
- I may need to see the boot you created as it was created. also, just for
- curiosity's sake, what page do you have your autosave set at. Ideally,
- for DmA, it should be set at the maximum setting.
-
-
- I tried both your original and the version of V3.1 in the GENIE library and
- both BOOT.OVRL cause the MY.BOOT program to have an eroneous line 135. You
- must be using a different version than what you released.
-
- OK - On the buffer being lost - I think I found the problem. I used CTRL V to
- try and view the buffer instead of C= V (I found you changed the command after
- looking at the help file). That gave me a good buffer view from a load. I
- haven't tried a buffer capture yet but believ it will now work OK if I can
- just remember C= V.
-
- You should get rid of that CTRL V result. Try it - it seems to make the buffer
- go into a continuous loop when I try and view it.
-
- Another problem. While viewing the buffer I pressed the M key to mark a spot
- (is that still the correct way?). Then I escaped and did a C= X and later a C=
- K to delete portions of the buffer. Both commands semed to put it into a loop
- as the CTRL V did.
-
- Thanks for the help. You should let me be a Beta tester- if there is a way to
- mess it up I am sure I will find it.

- What did you mean by: what page do you have your autosave set at. Ideally,
- for DmA, it should be set at the maximum setting.
-
- I have been selecting- 3] 1750 [512 K] during the boot up if that is what
- you are talking about. If not please explain.
-
- Should I be selecting for the REU SIZE:
-
- 7] AUTO [Data will be lost] for instance with DMA mode?
