- Personally I think ShareWare is a
- bust, but if you feel an OVERWHELMING
- need to part with something of
- monetary value. I would be more than
- happy to help cure that need by
- taking it off your hands.
- ----
- Who is going to send him any $? First he defines it as freeware, then he
- brings up shareware. So which is it?? Another problem I have with it is
- the wording of the request. Not many people have an "OVERWHELMING need to
- part with something of monetary value". The user would feel like a fool to
- send him $.
-
- BTW, I asked him personally, and he said it was shareware. I tried to
- start a drive on Q-Link to pay him $. I think people thought I was wierd.
-
- EB>> I don't do this for privileges either.
-
- I never thought you did.
-
- EB>> I have to pay every month to be on GEnie, so you can see that
- supporting users actually costs me money.
-
- I realize that. That's why I think some people that would be supporting
- their users aren't on GEnie. They can't afford it.
-
- EB>> All the above in mind, I don't know about shareware status. You have
- an interesting point about when you downloaded the program.
-
- Well, I don't want to get off on technical grounds. My point was that I
- did not know the status of RTCM. My understanding was that that v2.* are
- PD, and v3.* are commercial.
-
- EB>> I hope this explains my impatience with people who get PAID marketing
- stuff for our computers and offer lukewarm support in ANY way.
-
- Who are you referring to?
-
- EB>> No one here can say anything, going back as far as they like, about
- how I've supported the program.
-
- I don't doubt that.
-
- EB>> Everyone can give themselves a bit of credit for making suggestions
- that worked their way into RTCM.
-
- See what a good attitude you have :D
-
- EB>>I have lots to learn and will be learning C starting next week.
-
- Cool.
-
- EB>> My c128 is costing me money now. I have almost virtually stopped
- writing stuff for LoadStar meaning there is no $$$ coming in from that.
-
- Why?
-
- EB>> I am looking to do more on the Internet and GEnie's front end is not
- what I consider ideal.
-
- Cool.
-
- EB>> I want to continue to support RTCM, but more importantly I want to
- continue programming my 128.
-
- I hope we don't lose another programmer.
-
- EB>> I don't want money to intrude on that, but I can see it is
- inevitable. I don't know how to address that right now. I'm going to give
- it some thought.
-
- I can't recommend Steve's book highly enough.
-
- EB>> As for DesTerm/Dialogue/RTCM... RTcm was never meant to compete
- against the others.
-
- If you remember, you started it ;D I just said that I like how Desterm
- scrolled better. Ok, then here is one for RTCM... Desterm's CHAT mode is
- garbage compared to RTCM.
-
- EB>> Lengthy comparisons about what RTCM cannot do are pointless (and
- sometimes premature) but I like discussion.
-
- "and sometimes premature" :D
-
- EB>> I can see how it could get frustrating tho. I've always been unusual
- about what upsets me... I brush off what upsets some and get upset at what
- most people brush off. ::: shrug ::: I'd rather see someone get offended
- than get gone if you know what I mean, though, and shoot back.
-
- What?
-
- EB>> I honestly don't know what to do about the money aspect of things.
- I
- honestly don't.
-
- Thanks for being honest. I've really be noticing lately how most people
- will not admit to anything.
-
- EB>> And the funny thing is, with the new baby and my wife having been off
- work since April, I of all people SHOULD be upset about things and I'm
- not.
-
- How do you manage not to be upset?
-
- EB>> I just redid the dialer code and I think I may try my hand at the
- RTScTS stuff because of the proliferation of faster modems...
- unfortunately I can't test them, but anyway, at least for now I'm going to
- unfortunately I can't test them, but anyway, at least for now I'm going to
- continue to offer the best support I can.
-
- Interesting how programmers don't have as much as their users have.
-
- EB>> I'm not Matt Desmond or Gary Farmaner,
-
- Oh, I don't know about that :)
-
- EB>> but I'm still 'visibly' available and supporting the C128, if that
- counts for anything.
-
- Yes, it counts for a lot!
-
- In closing, (finally :D) I'd just like to say that I am a strong supporter
- of paying authors the $ that they are due. But the users have to be made
- aware of what is expected of them.
-
- The reason I have not sent in $ for v3 is that it is marketed by Parsec.
- So if that means I should stop using v2.02, then I will stop. I haven't
- received a definative answer. JBEE seems to think 2.02 is shareware, but
- Ed is unsure. I want to do what is right, but I don't know what that is.

-
- BG> EB>> My c128 is costing me money now. I have almost virtuall

-
- BG> Why?
-
- It is because I have changed jobs and schedules... I used to work
- midnight to 8, Sunday through Thursday. Now I work a flex schedule
- Monday through Friday.... usually 6:30 to 3:40... anyway, I'm just
- usually too tired to do anything on my computer when I get home. So
- I didn't want that cryptic remark of mine to be seen by anyone as a
- shot at LoadStar. It was not. It is just a result of less time and
- energy. I did just sell them another utility, but that one has been
- written since last year. I just never got round to sending it to them.
-
- O, one other thing... someone who read my last post kindly offered to loan
- me a USR modem to test with for a few weeks. I accepted.... as soon as I
- get it, I'll get started on the RTS/CTS support for RTCM.
-
-
- IF I continue working on RTCM, I have other projects in various states of
- completion.... one of them is a UUENCODE/DEcODE overlay. Another is
- support for ANSI and probably VT100... those are not as high on my priority
- list because, as I said before, I tend to write those things that are
- useful to the things I do.
-
- I like programming my 128. I will enjoy the PC as well, but I can see a
- glaring problem with it as far as the programs I've acquired (from GEnie,
- etc.).... everyone does their programs for shareware, which is not a bad
- thing, but everything seems to have been done 10+ times... there is just
- not that many things to write programs for.... that is kind of a
- discouragement. But as I said, I won't have the time to crank out the
- number of things I have done in the past. At least, that is what I am
- thinking this week... next week, who knows... :)

- get called in. Also, I'm helping to unionize the Pages at one of libraries

- Seriously! But that is another topic.
-
- EB>> someone who read my last post kindly offered to loan me a USR modem

-
- Cool! I don't have an extra. My 128 gets the 14.4. The Amiga has a 2400.
- (obviously I don't call with the Amiga ;) )
-

-
- Well, if you feel I owe you a shareware fee, let me know. I personally
- don't feel I owe it to JBEE, but then I have not seen the contract (if
- there is one). If there is a way to get v3.* from you, how do I do it? If
- not, I will have to go back to Desterm even though it is inferior to RTCM
- for GEnie. Or I suppose I could use Dialog.
-
- EB>> I have other projects in various states of completion....
-
- Cool. About support for ANSI, etc.. well that would depend how many users
- use RTCM for stuff besides GEnie. I use Desterm other places.
-
- EB>> there is just not that many things to write programs for.... that is

-
- Yeah, but you'll think of something. There will be something that you
- can't do, and you'll want to write a program to do it.
-

- John: You don't have to have anything in your path statements. I just
- (if they are in there) put them in there because of my setup. Remove
- them and the partition number and you should not see any drive access
- before an actual command is sent to the unit.
-
- I got a 'brainstorm' today after I had one or two people tell me that
- following an auto-save, RTcm sometimes misses a prompt that should cause
- a match even when it is on the screen. I checked both of my NMI handlers
- and my RSGET code is the same.... so, I have added code to my new
- AutoLog that, after an autosave, will find the input buffer pointer (which
- is a self-modified pointer) and back it up several bytes. The net
- effect will be that many duplicated bytes in the next buffer. RTCMaster
- does not search for strings byte by byte as they come in... it searches
- for the last character in the expect string... when found it compares
- backward. The reason I did it this way was because I felt that checking
- as they came in would open me to totally missing a match if a partial
- match came along. anyway, this technique, if it works, will cause RTCM,
- after an autosave, to go back and grab the last x characters it
- received.... if it finds the match character, it can start checking
- again. The down side is if a prompt gets garbled... but it would not
- have caught that anyway. And you can, if you are at a prompt you know
- RTCM should be catching, press RETURN to cause GEnie to send it again.
- That would take care of garbled prompts.
-
- I have been tinkering with the overlays this week.... added a directory
- function to the copier overlay, a device change from the defaults main
- menu, and have some more tinkering to do. The AutoLog should be sent
- this week cuz I'd like it to have some live testing. the others I'll
- probably just upload as a collection. Any suggestions while I'm under
- the 'hoods'?

-
- I'm going to upload a new AutoLog for version 3.01 later tonight. To
- use it, you will have to make 1 change to your boot program. In the
- line that loads 'ovrl.autolog' you have to add a ',b0'. This is
- because the file has increased a lot in size. The line that must change
- looks like this:
-
- 250 f$="ovrl.autolog":bload(f$),u(dv),b0
-
- NOte that your line number may be different. Just find the line that
- loads "ovrl.autolog" and add the ',b0' as in the example above.
- Future versions of the boot programs and BootSet will handle this
- automatically.
-
- AutoLog is a lot bigger now, tho the coding was not totally
- responsible. I had to make a change in the autosave routines for
- the superscript function, which is the script language. It is a lot more
- than I want to explain right here, but under the right situation, a
- script with a 'subscript' batch file that did an autosave of incoming
- data would be hosed after the autosave. This bug would **NOT** affect
- the logon scripts made with ScriptMaker ***UNLESS*** they called a
- superscript that used a subscript.... I know that sounds complicated.
- The new version of AutoLog is designed to make SuperScripts easier to
- use. Bottom line is that this new AutoLog recognizes the potential and
- addresses it... at the cost of a lot of real estate. The size increase
- means the overlay is loading over the $D000-$DFFF block, meaning that it
- absolutely has to go into RAM 0, which is why the change to the boot file.
- If you understood all of that, make the change before you try to use the
- new version. If you did not understand it, make the change anyway. It
- won't work unless you do. The change in the dialer routines alone are
- worth using the new version.
-
- bTW, rename your current autolog overlay so that you have a backoff version
- in case anything would happen.
-
- Watch for the upload later tonight.

- FWIW, when I do uploads like you are talking about, I use a char delay and
- everything works fine. GEnie doesn't keep proper pace with the screen

-
- Sometimes I use a prompted transfer too... using the '>' character as a
- 'pace' character. You can do the whole thing w/o a delay if you do that.
- GEnie controls the pace.
-
- I have done the '*u' (or is it '*b') successfully too, spanning several

- It was easy to find... the code was there to test for it but it was not

-
- For those of you who log on to GEnie at 9600, what do you have to do?
- I am using a loaner modem but cannot get it to logon over 2400. I have
- tried the &n8 string. No good. What kills me is that Aladdin logs on
- the same number at 9600 w/o any effort at all.
-
- Now a status report.... I have had some success w/hardware flow control.
- On DLG. On RbbS it does not work properly, but on DLG, at 14.4, I don't
- lose a thing. Of course, I could not get transfers to work there. So it
- is going to be awhile before I get everything working properly. I also
- don't understand why it works on DLG and not on RbbS. I tried NovaTerm
- and it worked on Rbbs. Didn't bother with it on DLG cuz RTCM worked there
- so I figured it was moot.
-
- O, another up side is that the dialer routine works great at 14.4 on
- everything I call. Had some early problems but got them figured out and
- it may also prove to resolve the line noise I was suffering. As I had
- suspected earlier, the problems seem to have been the modem on my PC
- upstairs. Let me know if my messages are still garbled after this. I
- unplugged the modem upstairs for now.
-
- For anyone using 3.01 at high speeds, if you are losing characters, try
- turning off your screen display during buffering. I did this with the
- regular version of RTcm and it didn't lose characters for me. From your
- main screen, press c=d. You'll see the 'S' next to the system drive
- number on your status line turn to a '*'. From within a script, I believe
- the keys you must press are ALT-V. This is a toggle, so if you do it
- once, make sure you do it a second time in your script so that display
- comes back on when the script is finished... or you can press c=d to bring
- it back. This should serve as an interim solution until I can get what
- I'm working on completed.

-
- Really? That's hard to believe when there are dozens here, in New
- York.
-
- While this may be a sort of catch-22, have you tried:
- -----------------------------------------------------
-
- http://thelist.com/###.html Replace "###" with your area
- code for list of INet providers.
-
- This brings up pages and pages of listings in the 212 area. Give
- it a try for yours!

- I *think* I have it! I just did a test at 14.4 on a FIDO RBBS board
- and it succeeded perfectly... I just read all messages here in cat 8
- topic 18 and it succeeded perfectly... I have a bit more testing I want
- to do and some things to consider... if all goes well I may have something
- to upload for beta testing this weekend. I'm REALLY pleased tho!
- The only problem I was having yesterday is gone and, tho I was afraid I
- was going to have to change things, RTCMaster still has its large input
- buffer... that was kind of important to me!

- I just logged on here at 14.4 and read in all messages in this cat and
- topic.... worked very well... found another thing as well...
-
- as I told the guy from GEnie, when we are working with customers of our
- bank trying to dial in on an async line, they dial through sprint, but
- when connected, they only tupe '@'.... not '@h' or '@H'.... and it
- works for them. I just proved to myself that I am correct about this
- for my home link up too... I got in and got a genie logon screen ONLY
- after typing the '@' w/o the 'h'. Bill O... you *might* want to give
- that a try.... I will do some more testing with this too... and I'll
- work up a script to get logged on thru sprint when I'm done w/my testing.
- but I'm *starting* to feel like I might have this thing nailed....
- not quite cocky enuf to say it very loud... :)

- JB>> The only reason people such as yourself have gotten away with talking
- trash about GEnie, Parsec, and myself is I am not allowed as a sysop to
- respond.
-
- I didn't realize you were restricted. I'd love to see your responses, but
- I am not going to be part of you breaking the rules. I won't comment
- further so you do not feel you have to comment back. (Actually, I'm
- suprised that you are willing to break the rules.)
-
- I have to comment on these 3 items however...
-
- JB>> Consider your license to use any version of RTCM suspended until
- payment is recieved
-
- You have not proven to me that I have an unregistered version. But anyway,
- I have been using my Amiga to call. Even though I do not agree with you
- that 2.02 is shareware, I am trying to find another term to use.
-
- JB>> and forget trying to use those silly tactics to drive a wedge between
- Ed and myself. It will not work.
-
- I am definitely NOT trying to do that. I am sorry if I have caused any
- problems between you and Ed. I am just stating what I feel.
-
- JB>> Though I will make an exception in your case as long as you agree not
- to go crying to FEEDBACK about the responses. As such, I invite you to
-
- Well, I am not afraid of your responses, but I think FEEDBACK should be
- made aware of what is going on here. Even if I am totally, 100% wrong, I
- feel I am being treated disrespectfully. I am very offended that you feel
- I am someone that would not register shareware, talk trash about things,
- try to break up friends, etc. :'''(

- Ed...
-
- I am sorry if I caused bad feelings between you and JBEE. The only reason
- I brought up the fact that I would not purchase version 3.01 of RTCM is
- because I wanted you to know that it was not the quality of the program
- that was stopping me.
-
- I'm not sure if 3.01 is available for public download. If so, I never
- downloaded it because of the above problem.
-
- I honestly thought RTCM 2.02 was PD. That is why I did not register it.
- I do not know what to do now, because JBEE says it is shareware, and you
- say you are not sure. What I have been doing is using my Amiga. I'd rather
- be using RTCM! :)
-
- On the topic of dropping chars, I just called with the Amiga and it did it
- too! So I will see if it is the modem.
-
- Now on the topic of shareware... The place on line is the Home
- Office/Small Business area (HOSB). The organization I mentioned is the
- Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). I just downloaded some .zip
- files of messages from the shareware topics. (unzipped them on the Amiga.)
- Boy, are they good!

-
- I don't know... Probably... I uploaded a 3.00 which turned up some
- problems.... so I fixed the problems, resulting mainly from changes
- I made in the way I assembled the code, not the code itself... and
- that is where the 3.01 came from... I would be inclined to think it
- is what you are receiving.
-
- The changes I have been talking about wrt flow control are only to the
- SwiftLink module, not the main program. this means that when I upload it
- it will not require a whole new version, but rather a very small file.
- Of course, I'll be uploading a new version of autolog too soon that
- includes a nice upgrade to the dialer routines... but again, that is
- an overlay upgrade, not a version upgrade.
-
- If you have a 9600 or faster modem, you will like the new stuff! I have
- a wrinkle to iron out yet... on RbbS and GEnie, it works great... for
- some reason, the last edit I did to get things to work properly have
- caused DLG to lock me up after I connect... I have to find that, but I
- am starting a long weekend tonight, so I'm very optimistic that i can
- get things working, tested, uploaded, and beta tested... so that I can
- get this USR modem back to my benefactor...
-
- If I get time, I'll try to do a hack for you to change your keystrokes
- to do the buffer scroll... o, and that reminds me.... we had discussed
- the speed differential between RTcm and DesTerm in scrolling... I think
- I may know the reason for that.... RTCM uses a full screen width
- light bar cursor.... that adds time to each line printed.... and an easy
- adjustment would be to change it to a narrow cursor in the defaults/
- profile section...

- BG> I am sorry if I caused bad feelings between you and JBEE
-
- You didn't... I don't have any bad feelings... even if I did, it would
- not be because of external things... I think everyone has to stand on
- their own merit (or fall).
-
- The only person I *do* have hard feelings toward on GEnie, and always
- will, is DEB, and she did that on her own.
-
- Some people send their correspondence with me in Email, some here. I
- answer everyone usually within hours of the original post. I
- understand your situation w/RTCM... I'm not the most mercenary person
- you'll ever meet, and don't get bogged down in the money end of things.
- there is a guy local to me for whom I wrote an accounts receivable
- program about 10 years ago for his PC.... I have maintained it and
- done 2 major upgrades... the latest one since I got my own PC. He is
- very pleased, and I have him 'beta' testing it for the last 2 or 3
- months... fixing what he wants fixed, adding things he asks for or that
- I find convenient during my testing.... he has been bugging me for the
- past 2 months to bill him.... that is not my forte. It is the hardest
- part of programming... as anyone who writes code will tell you, it is
- a consuming thing.... thousands of hours on jobs that never get
- finished... Adding the time I have spent on BellTerm, Catalog, PCG Term,
- Indexer 64, Indexer 128, TotalRecall, Matrix, Sentinel, MagniPrint,
- StepTracer, GraphIt, SideWinder 64, SideWinder 128, TapePool, Equations,
- EGads, Splifix, UserConventions, etc., etc., etc. have easily
- consumed very nearly a life... and are not even the whole catalog of
- stuff I've written. Your reason for not buying RTCM is not unique to
- you. I have heard it before. I am going to allow myself this once
- to comment on this in a roundabout way.... if we boycott a product on the
- basis of who sells it, it is not the marketer who gets hurt, or who gets
- hurt worst. I have always found it VERY distasteful when I see posts and
- doc files FILLED with whining (IMO) about people who use programs but
- don't pay for them. I don't want to get caught up in that. I don
