- Ed would have to verify this for me, but I am pretty sure as long
- as you do not send GEnie a carriage return in a RTC, GEnie allows
- you to send up to 255 characters before sending your message

- JB> as long as you do not send GEnie a carriage return in a RTC,
- JB> GEnie allows you to send up to 255 characters before sending
- JB> your message to the room
-
- I think it is even higher than that... may be up to 512 characters...
- But the thing is you should be able to send long messages with a buffer
- smaller than the total size of the message by using GEnie's buffer in
- this manner.... just type the first part of your message and press
- shift-return, then the next part, etc. When done, press RETURN. Now,
- keep in mind when you press SHFT-RTRN that your message is not going to be
- displayed by GEnie in chat.... you will only see the message when you
- finally press RETURN. The *only* snag in this scenario is if NovaTerm
- will not allow you to use a shift-return. The way I do it in RTCMaster:
- once my 160 character 'chat' buffer fills up, it is automatically sent
- to GEnie, but without a carriage return (or you can press shift-return
- at any time to do this also) and the buffer clears and you can resume
- typing... at the end you press RETURN. I suppose now you will have to
- wait to hear from Nick to see if this is possible, the shift-return that
- is.
-
- Even on local boards, this works for me nicely because their message
- editors format it correctly similar to the way chat does...

- Hmm. I think you will get a carriage return even if you press shift-return.
- I wasn't aware that shift-return had that effect. I'll keep that in mind.
- Perhaps I can post a simple fix here, so that if you press return, a return
- gets sent with the line, and if you press shift-return, everything EXCEPT the
- return is sent.

- Nick, I found out one problem that I was having which was with the RTS/CTS
- problem when using disk commands. It seems that I set my baud rate too high.
- It was at 38.4k. But I've lowered it to 19.2k and I haven't had any problems
- since. I think you mentioned in your 9.5 manual to set the baud rates to 19.2k
- but when I received 9.5 I automatically switched to 9.5 from 9.4 without
- thinking of checking the manual just in case I have any difficulties. So if
- anyone reading thi had trouble getting a modem connection after doing a disk
- command with the flow control being set to RTS/CTS, be sure that your modem
- rate is set at no higher than 19.2k. However, I still have one problem which
- has to do with saving buffer files when using the scripts (although this could
- be the computer at fault). When the buffer saves a file to disk with a script
- running, the program will crash after incoming text is executed. Is there any
- way I could avoid this such as writing an extra script command?
- Thanks.

-
- Number: 6717 Name: NOVATERM2.0.SDA Address: CHANTECLER Date:

- Description: This is the final version of Novaterm. This version supports
- 2400 baud operation. It does not have multifile transfer. The 40 column mode
- has been changed to a RGB emulation mode. The buffer can now load and
- transmit a text file.Other improvements have been made. This release is

- Just read on Fido that Nick Rossi said on another network that he plans to
- release NT 9.6 which will be a shareware version of the program and NT 10.0, a
- commercial version. He has put in a lot of features in and the 9.6 upgrade

- This, in my opinion, is all fine and dandy but I have one question: Is true?

- hand sources, especially the first hand source is right here on GEnie. By the

- before the end oof the first half of '95'. This will be a commercial pgm.
- 10.0 will be a complete re-write of NT. He wasn't sure whether he would
- implement all the changes at once or a little at a time. I can't see him
- writting a commercial pgm. then upgrading a little at a time. When he was
- asked about 9.6 he said there wouldn't be a 9.6, that the next release would
- be 10.0 (if I remember correctly). But I think something was said about
- some upgrades to 9.5. But if he's going to release a commercial pgm. I
- would imagine all the goodies going into it. Some of the goodies being
- the REU being used as buffer space and 'fax-send' capability. Tried getting a

- About the break command, do you mean GEnie doesn't reset after you issue a few
- breaks or just doesn't respond to a break. If it's the latter (another
- instance when GEnie won't respond to a break is when you try to halt the
- listing of text, such as a library listing.
-
- If it's that, then you have to go to the setup menu and adjust the break
- setting. I forgot what the number is for it though. Anyway, this would replace
- the disable the COntrol-C on your keyboard but will let you use Novaterm's
- break command (C= X).
-
- If it['s the former then what I THINK it is is GEnie itself. In that
- situation, you would have to hang up.
-
- When you say the password do you mean the HHH command or your password? If
- it's the former, then I don't know what to say since even I have had trouble
- there. If it's the latter, then I'm not really sure on what you mean.
-
- However, there is a better way to sign on to GEnie and that is using a script
- to call the service. Here's the script I use:
-
- .opt ansi check 1 "CONNECT" wait output "HHH" check 2 "U" wait output "<your
- password info>" output "^m"
-
- This is assuming you're calling GEnie using Novaterm's ANSI terminal mode.
-
- I've been meaning to upload some Novaterm scripts one of these days (if it's
- all right to Nick<G>).
-
- Oh, I almost forgot. The above script will take you to the opening menu.

- ID & PW. After you get the Connect 2400 you will type the HHH and then press
- your F1 key to send your ID & PW.
-
- To correct your Break key, go to the SETTINGS page (Type SETTINGS at any main

- the
- key that you select as your break key. I use the pound key as my break key,
- so
- I enter The ASCII value (92) at that option. To send the password that you
- entered in the autodial menu press the 'F1' key. Your p/w is assoigned to
- that
- key. You can save a few keystrokes by assigning 'hhh' to your 'F2' key (or

- By all means, post your scripts! It would be nice to have a GEnie login
- script available for download. I could include it in the next release. One
- thing people sometimes don't realize is that you have to COMPILE the script
- before trying to execute it. In older versions, you need to use the "Script
- compiler" program to compile the script into a form Novaterm can interpret.
- Starting with version 9.4 (is that right?) the script compiler is built into
- the text editor, so you can type in a script and compile it directly by
- pressing RUN/STOP in the editor.

- script files and how do I set them up. Any help will be appreciated. I am now
- using WIZARD 64 with GENIE
- ------------
-
- OK. From what I understand, you have Novaterm reconizing the SwiftLink
- cartridge but haven't chosen the modem driver. To chose the modem driver, to
- to the "Terminal params" selection of the Novaterm main menu and press return.
- Next, you will see a list of options headed by the title, "Terminal
- parameters." At the top of the list is "Modem type." Press return and scroll
- down to where it says, "Hayes 38.4k." Press return and then the modem driver
- will be installed into the program. To see if you've done this right, go into
- terminal mode. If you do not see a highlighted "C" at the top, then Novaterm
- is ready to telecommunicate. (By the way, on the second page of the "terminal
- parameters" menu, you will see the option "Flow control." Press return until
- you see "RTS/CTS" for best high speed performance.
-
- When done with the changes, select "save config file" in the "terminal param"
- and press return for a permanent configuration of Novaterm. (That is, making
- the default settings for Novaterm so everytime you load NT you won't have to
- worry about the settings again.)
-
- Script files are those that make your telecomm sessions easier. Recently, I've
- loaded a few NT GEnie scripts to the libraries. For example, I have a script
- that when executed signs onto GEnie, goes to the Commodore RT, and then comes
- into this BB, opens the buffer to capture new messages, closes the buffer,
- logs off GEnie and then saves the buffer.
-
- Before you execute a script file, it must be compiled. To do this, load the
- text of the script you want to use into NT's Text Editor. Now press the Run-
- stop key and at the top of the screen you should see the message
- "Compiling..." which last for about a couple of seconds. Next you will see the
- line "Object file:" Enter the name of the compiled script that you want to
- use. For example, I named the script I use to capture new messages from this
- BB as, "sc.commodore bb." Be sure to have the script as the same disk as your
- NT program disk. Press return and your script has been saved. Now go back to
- the Novaterm program.
-
- So you won't have to remember the name of the script program each time you
- want to sign on to GEnie, you might want to go to the autodial menu and type
- in the name of the script in the appropriate phone book entry (which is
- accessable from the autodial menu by pressing "f2"; when you do this, cursor
- down to whre it says script and press return; type in the name of the compiled
- script). For example, I have a seperate phone book for my GEnie entries (to
- seperate them from the BBSs I call). One entry I have is Commodore BB. To
- enter the script name, I press F2 at the Commodore BB entry, scroll down to
- "script" and type in the name of my compiled script.
-
- Some tips: At the C= BB menu, type pro non for no menus and go to the GEnie
- setup menu and type in 0 and the scroll/page lenght prompt for permanent no
- scrolling.

- About the driver, I assume you have your 2400 hooked up to the SwiftLink? [C
