- Hello, I am a computer science teacher who collects home computer systems
- cilate and early to mid 80s. I have a number of systems (Adam, AquariusAtari
- 400 & 800, Apple II, Timex, etc.) and have recently acquired a mint Vic 20. My
- kick out of this collecting is to put together a complete system, in mint
- condition, and 100% original. I have a good start with the disk drive (VIC-
- 1541), cassette unit, VICMODEM, RAM cartridge, and various carttridge
- software. I am looking for an original printer that would be authentic for a
- VIC, and some disk based software. Magazines and books would be welcome also.
- If you can give me some tips on locating these items I would appreciate it. My
- name is Ed Snow. Leave me mail as EESnow. This is my first CBM system, as I
- have avoided the CBM 64 because it was in production after my period of
- interest. Also would like to have a PET. I have an 8032 which was the business
- version of the PET. Thanks, and hope to hear from someone soon. Ed Snow

- Hi Ed :)
- The two earliest printers I can think of are the
- MPS-1525 dot matrix printer
- and
- C-1520 plotter that used (four) color pens.
-
- Question is if they were in production before 1985.
-
- Any collector should have at least one Scott Adams game in their collection
- and an original C-1311 (#?) joystick from Commodore.
-
- Early versions of Transactor magazine would be a good catch though you might
- have to kill someone for their's :D
-
- Most software came on ROM or cassette, I can't remember ever seeing
- any on disk though I am sure there is some.

- You know that time frame includes not only the 64, but also the 128,
- unless you are talking computers that went out of production prior to
- 1985?
-
- I have a 1525 that needs cleaned up some. Ribbons might be hard to come
- by, tho Radio Shack used to sell compatibles. If you absolutely can't
- find one, I would be willing to sell mine. I do frequently see these
- sold though. I also have a datasette. BTW, I believe the 1540 was the
- disk drive for the VIC, tho someone will surely say if that is not the
- case.

- Ed is correct on the VIC-1540 being the correct disk drive to use with the
- VIC-20. That would be most fitting as being an original to go with it. But
- everybody is wrong on the 1525 printer. The predecessor to the 1525 is a
- little-known printer called the VIC-1515. It is smaller in size than the 1525,
- just as noisy and clunky. It uses the same ribbon, has the same set of
- commands. It will not use regular paper. It is a pull-type tractor feed, but
- is about an inch narrower. So good luck finding paper to fit it. It prints
- with 60 dpi just like it's bigger brother (that makes the 1525 sound
- important), and can do 80 characters per line. It is brown and tan in color. I
- know all about this printer because I have one. Mine gets used only for single-
- row mailing labels. It is perfect for labels since it isn't any good for
- anything else.
- As for the VIC-20 itself, make sure that it uses the two-prong power supply.
- That would make it an earlier unit. The later ones use the same power supply
- as the 64.

- Thanks for your responses to my Vic20 inquiry. I am not an absolute puris as I
- am satisfied with my Vic20 even if it is a later model of the Vic. also am
- satisfied with my VIC-1541 drive, as it is the Vic beige color and nonot the
- CBM64 grey. I would like to get a Vic beige printer that would fit in with my
- system, so a 1525 in beige would be great. Any ideas (besides flea markets)
- where I could get one? The 1515 interests me. If the guy with one wants to get
- rid of it in the future, let me know. Ed Snow

- The 1541 works fine as device #8 on my stand alone C64. The internal 1571
- drive of the C128D is wired as device#8 also. The problem is that there are no
- dip-switches on the 1541 to allow for device# change. What do I do?

-
- Vorty!
-
- You hit the nail on the head!
-
- You cannot have two drives with the same device number
- on the same system.
-
- There are two ways to change the device number of a drive.
-
- One is to make a temporary switch via direct commands.
-
- I'm assuming that you want a semi-permanent change.
-
- So, here's how you can change your 1541 to Device #9:
-
-
- 1) Unplug the drive!
-
- 2) Gently turn the drive onto it's top and remove the
- four screws in the recessed holes.
-
- 3) Turn the drive right side up and remove the top cover.
-
- 4) You'll see a metal cover with holes in i,
- remove this with two screws along it's side.
-
- 5) Look at the circuit board from the front,
- you'll see two semi-circles on the board
- in the center about 5 cm front the front.
- These are the "switches" to change device #'s.
-
- 6) Cutting the little sliver connecting the two
- semi-circles "opens" the switch, and will
- change your drive to Device #9.
-
- Cutting the back sliver will make your drive
- Device #10, and cutting both #11.
-
- 7) Reassemble your drive, you're done!
-
- If you are handy with a soldering iron,
- you could attach wires and a switch to these "pads",
- and have external control of the drive's device
- number at will!
-
- Important point:
-
- There are a few types of 1541's.
- If you can't match to this description,
- stop! Only cut if you are SURE.
-
- Important point II:
-
- You may want to consider changing the C128D's 1571 to
- device #9, and keeping the 1541 as #8 if you have JiffyDos.
- The C128D 1571 has a rep as being not too durable.
-
- How can you change the 1571 to dev #9?
- I don't know. :)

- While going through a mess of old papers, I found a mailorder catalog
- from J&R Music World dated Fall 1986 with some very interesting computer
- prices and merchandise listed.
- C=128 (flat) $249.95
- C=64C 189.00
- 1541C drive 199.95
- 1571 drive 249.95
- C=1902 monitor 299.95
- C=1660 Modem 300 64.95
- C=1670 Modem 1200 169.95
-
- There was a gawd awful lot of software for the 64/128 including such rare
- and unheard of titles (at least I've never heard of em) as:
-
- Firebird "The ADVANCED Music System" Anyone use this?
- Colossus Chess IV
- Batteries Included "The Consultant" a professional data base manager.
- Frankie Goes to Hollywood?
-
- For comparison, listed in this same catalog:
- General Technologies PC clone-80286 CPU, 640K RAM, One 1.2 Meg floppy
- drive, One 360K floppy drive and a huge 20 Meg hard drive sells for $1,199.95.
- SRP for this was $2,999.95.
-
- Hayes Smartmodem 1200 External $369.95
- Hayes Smartmodem 2400 External 569.95!! OUCH!
-
-
-
- Amiga with the 3.5" drive including monitor was 1,299.95. The picture in
- the catalog is not the A 500.
- Also interesting to note, there were no HD floppy disks in either format
- listed, only SD or DD. When did HD floppies come out?

- Today CMD hard drives hold 70x more data, are probably 100x faster,

- Hi Everyone!
-
- I have a slight problem with the C128 I bought used. You see, it did

- I bought a new C-128D internal power supply from a friend. I thought I
- could hardwire it to the motherboard of the C128, but it turned out to be more
- complicated than I thought!
- I plan to add a CMD RAMLink, CMD SWIFTLink and many other peripherals,

- Has anyone done this before? I'm sure someone must have tried besides

- K.KILL,
- Actually, the C-128D power supply is about 1/2 as strong as the 4.3 amp
- power supply that comes with the flat C-128, not to mention different.
- This is because the C-128D was designed to use a cheaper power supply.
- It has (4) 4464 DRAMs vs (16) 4164s, the SID is low power, etc.
- I think what you are trying to do with that C-128D power supply is very
- dangerou, if you are not sure what you are doing. I have found the book
- "Troubleshooting and Repairing Your Commodore 128" by Margolis one of the
- best books to have for hardware fixing.
