- Sub: What does error near $5175 mean?
-
- Applications copied to one 3.5" disk keep locking up Geos and saying there is
- an error near $5175. The copy was made by following the Geos manual. Any
- ideas?

- I'm using a C64 with v2.0, a 1541 for booting, a 1581, and a mouse. The lock-
- ups usually occur when I'm attempting to place or move tabs in GeoWrite and at
- various places in GeoPaint. Although Configure is recognizing drive A (1541
- #8) and B (1581 #9) I also am unable to open a write or paint file by double
- clicking on it while at the desk top. A message appears saying that "the
- application must be on the same disk in a one drive system." Is there
- something I overlooked? Any help is appreciated.
- Thanks,
- Mike

- Well, Mike, when using two drives of different types (like your 41 and 81),
- you do need to have the application on the disk with your data files. If you
- had, say, 2 81's, then you could have a dedicated application disk along with
- a data file disk. gateWay does bypass these problems, btw.

-
- Also, if you use an REU, then GEOS can stash drive information in there, and
- you can without trouble use different drive types.
-
- (Basically, most everything in GEOS is smoother and faster with a RAM device!)

- help. Hovever, I wasn't as clear as I probably need to be about these
- problems. BOTH the application and the files are on the same disk when the
- message telling me that both must be on the same disk appears. Also, the
- error message that locks up Geos only appears on the 1581 disk which I copied
- all of the Geos applications to as suggested by the Geos manual. Is it
- possible that by having all the applications on one disk is causing them to
- wreak havoc with each other? I can't really afford to pick up an REU right
- now but I'd be happy if I could put all of Geos' application on a single 1581
- disk. Is anyone out there running on such a set up? Any hint's?
- Thanks,
- Mike

- Mike, I suggest deprotecting Geos with Maverick and making the 1581 your
- boot disk.
- I am using the C128 but I had all my applications on a 1581 disk and no
- reu and everything worked fine.
- I would also suggest formatting a new disk and try moving all the
- applications over to the new disk again. It might be that some data
- got corrupted.

- Ahhh, Mike. I see! I had the same problems you did, getting the dialog box
- when the application and files were on the same disk. To solve it, I'd just
- open the application and not the data file. But believe it or not, gateWay
- solved the whole thing.
-
- For now, try what JBEE suggested; move your files to a new disk.

- Thank you both for the help. For now I'm going to try re-making a 1581 disk
- but I'm interested in both Maverick and GateWay. I've seen Maverick in passing
- and know where to look for it, but what about GateWay? Are either of these
- programs available for downloading from a BBS or GEnie?
-
- Thanks again,
- Mike

- GateWay is a commercial deskTop replacement from CMD. You'll want to
- check out category 12 for info, Mike.

- You guys forgot one thing you told me a few weeks ago, when I had the same
- problem with my re-furbed 1581 drive..he may be having the same trouble..
- Check the drive controller chip inside the 1581 (now, hope I get these numbers
- right this time) needs to be a 1772, the earlier ones had a problem with GEOS
- recognizing and using the 1581 drive..JBEE; did I get the chip number right
- this time?...:?

- Sub: MPS-803 printer driver???
-
- I've been using Geos v2 for some time, but I'm still having problems using my
- MPS-803 printer. Does anyone know if there were corrections made to the

- I've experimented with all of the Commodore drivers in the original Goes
- software but none seem to be perfect. The closet that I've come is the MPS-801
- driver, but I still have problems with page length and width. If I used the
- MPS-1000 (as directed by the manual) the output really becomes garbled. Is
- there any corrected versions of this driver out? Should I be doing anything
- special to my printer? HELP?
-
- Thanks,

-
- Mike,
-
- The MPS801 and MPS-803, both, have the same dot density, so their printer
- drivers should be interchangeable, as you've found out.
-
- Using an MPS-1000 driver with an MPS-803 would give distored graphics because
- it has a different print density.
-
- Have you done any searches in the Library for alternative printer drivers?
- Perhaps using terms like: MPS803, driver, geos, etc., might turn up a few
- printer driver files that give better results.
-
- Maybe one of our GEOS experts can recommend one?

- Mike, I had the same problem. I'm assuming that you're using GEOS 64 v.2.0,
- no? The MPS-1000 driver did the same for me, i.e., garbage, when I got v.
- 1.3. The MPS-801 driver did a pretty fair job, though.
-
- When I called BSW's customer service line, they sent out a disk with the MPS-
- 1000 driver from v. 1.2! That worked fine until I got a new printer. Later,
- when GEOS 128 2.0 was released, a new MPS-803 driver was included. I haven't
- tried it, but if you know someone with GEOS 128 2.0, ask for a copy of that
- driver.
-
- One other option: the drivers from ALL the BSW programs are available from BSW
- on one disk for $5.00. Ask for the Commodore Printer Drivers disk. The
- address:
-
- Berkeley Softworks Customer Service Department 2150 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley,
- California 94704
-
- Hope this helps!
