- Also upon exiting auto dial on busy or no answer via stop/run, the term

- Here's some more answers:
-
- Cheryl - I don't know what I was thinking of when I answered you hang up
- question (those late night sessions are killer's :sigh:). Your 'problem' was
- that you somehow selected the 'hgup on' option from the MODE menu. When this
- option is on geoTerm will automatically hang up the phone after a transfer.
- Let's say you have a long download to make from Genie but you don't want to
- baby-sit the computer. Simply turn the hangup on and let 'er rip. geoTerm will
- hang up the phone when it's through so you won't pay $$$ after the transfer
- waiting for Genie to idle out.
-
- DO-RAE-ME - I'm working on a patch to remove that box. It'll take a few days
- 'cause I've been busy as heck but I'll get it done as soon as I can. -WC

- Yes Bill after reading the Docs. CAREFULLY this time I figured out that I
-
- Must have had Hangup on sorry to bug you the only thing that I find lacking in
- GeoTerm V2.0 is the ability to do Multi-File Punter uploads and downloads. But
- then you can't have everything. One Question for you Bill. I was under the
- impression that YMODEM and XMODEM w/1k blocks were the different names. For
- the same thing. Are the really diferent protocols?

- There is some confusion on the names of those two protocols. GEnie's use is, I

- uses 1k blocks. XMODEM 1K is a single-file protocol.

- The duplex selection won't make a difference -- that's handled in the term
- code, it's completely ignored in the protocols. If you are not getting GOO's
- then of course it won't start -- that's what it's waiting for! Try telling the

- Hmmm... in some respects GEOS 1.2 is just as incompatible as GEOS 128. Things
- didn't really become standardized until 1.3 - a lot of stuff is lacking in 1.2
- (especially relating to disk drivers - and there is no REU support at all).
- Most well-written programs will work with any 1.2 or up system, but there will
- be some that will most likely bomb. I doubt DualTop would work at all, since
- it patches into the Kernal to replace deskTop and that is sure to not work on
- anything except 2.0 (and the possible exception of 1.3 if he allowed for

-
- It's fun to boot now and then to say "my, look how far we've come" but that's

- Here's the story:
-
- I used Maverick to make backup copies GEOS128 V2.0 and I use these disks
- instead of the originals. I also purchased GEOFile128 and used maverick to
- make a backup copy of this also. However, I made the mistake of installing
- Geofile to my maverick copy of the boot disk instead of the original boot
- disk.
-
- Now my dilemma:
-
- I got tired of using the flippy boot disk and swaping disks all the time so
- I used maverick to make a 1571 boot disk. The 1571 boot disks work just
- fine with everything EXCEPT Geofile. I get the "Please Reboot . . . blah,
- blah, blah" message.
- Also found out I get the same message using Geofile with the original boot
- disks. My Geofile will ONLY work with the maverick made copies of the boot
- disk!
-
- Is there any way to fix this so Geofile will work with the original boot
- disk and thereby allow me to make a 1571 boot disk? Besides sending to
- Berkley for a replacement boot disk?
-
- Actually the above also applies to my geowrite dictionary. Installed that
- to the boot disk copy too. Did I make a mess or what? :b
-
- And the solution:
- ???
- I'm all ears! er, , ,eyes!

- I have a Seikosha SP-1200 VC which should be much the same as your 1000.
- Although I haven't used it with GEOS lately, I do remember that it worked well
- with one of the CBM compatable drivers that came with GEOS. If you are getting
- extra linefeeds, you may want to check the setting of the DIP switch for
- carrage returns. If it is ON then switch it to OFF and try it again. I also
- remember having a two pass driver for the Seikosh that is somewhat like those
- enhanced drivers for the Epson compatables. I will check my archive disks and
- if I can find it and it isn't already in the library ( I will let you know if
- it already is there ) I will upload it.
-
- As far as the Epson compatable feature, it is a sometimes thing. I have found
- that it does work with some graphic dumps ( a MacPaint viewer that I have
- comes to mind ), but there are others that just don't function corectly.
- Unfortunately, those enhanced Epson drivers are among those that I didn't have
- any luck with. Although, because I also have a Panisonic 1180, I didn't spend
- all that much time trying to get one of those drivers to work. If you have the
- time to experiment you may be able to get it to work. I would suggest
- downloading the Lasermatrix editor file which would let you modify the escape
- codes of an existing driver. Who knows, you might get it to work.
-
- BTW: your message was quite garbled.

- I had a 1000vc for a week and I think why it doesnt work with the
- multi-pass drivers is the fact that it doesn't have the horizontal OR the
- vertical resolution of the Epson (or clones). Which makes the printout
- rougher than that of a Epson.
- I tested it with Pagefox and the quadstrike (240 dpi) is what makes the
- Epson drivers so nice. I don't believe this is supported at all on the
- Seikosha Sp-1xxx VC printers.

- Comparing the manuals for both my Seikosha and Panisonic, I find that they
- both use the same codes for bits per inch, N/216 linefeed, etc.. Although, the
- Seikosha manual said that when set to 240 DPI it would only print every other
- dot and ignore those in between. So, in effect, you only end up with a max of
- 120 DPI, but it should work ( at least this shouldn't be the reason why it

- I'm not sure about the 1000, but from the original question it sounded like it
- had the same Epson FX-80 emulation option as my 1200. There is a DIP switch

- Ok, here's the deal. I just last night got ahold of GeoDebugger 2.0 from a
- fellow called the Smee (don't ask). This gent was kind enough to mail it to me
- right after I asked him for it. After dissolving the archive it was in, I
- booted up GEOS 128 v2.0.
-
- I made a copy of Geodebugger on my ramdisk (Ram 1571 config.), and ran the
- BACKRAM.PATCH program on it. All went well; it said GeoDebugger is pathched!
-
- But the damn thing doesn't work! Just to test it out, I assembled and linked
- the Sample VLIR application that comes with GeoProgrammer and is described in
- the manual. After that I clicked on the SamVlir.DBG file and off I went. The
- debugger said 'Loading super debugger into Back Ram', then went ahead with
- 'Loading symbols' etc...I switched to 40 column mode and everything seemed
- fine. Then I tried to top-step through the SamVLIR program and the system
- died flat out. I couldn't even reboot by pressing the reset switch and waiting
- for the REU to reboot GEOS. Just hit reset and got a madly oscillating screen.
- Totally irrecoverable.
-
- So, I turned things off, waited awhile, turned them back on. Rebooted GEOS.
- Copied my work files back over to the REU. Tried the debugger again. Exact
- same crash every time. It would top-step through the code until it reached the
- part where the main program called InitSwap, a routine to initialize the disk
- for swapping of Vlir modules in and out of memory. And there it sits,
- dead...The debugger is absolutely useless to me if it chokes on even a simple
- example program (written by the AUTHOR of Debugger) from the manual. Anybody
- have any idea what is going on with my system here? I am lost
-
- P.S. I am running Geos 128 v2.0 on a 128-D with a 512k REU and an external
- 1571 drive, mouse, and printer. Never had any weird happenings like this
- before, so I am really baffled. Jim, Bill, anybody! HELP!!!

- Hey there Smee, left you some mail about it already...
-
- I did download it twice, and have tried it both with and without the patch. It
- crashes and corrupts the REU whether it is running from Back Ram or if it is
- running from the REU. Makes reboot impossible. However, if I don't actually

- if I run them, it is fine. So I ahve found a means of getting valuable use

-
- The Reu corruption on the other hand occurs even if the Debugger doesn't
- crash. I can exit to the Desktop, run other applications, etc. just as always,
- but if I attempt a system reset (thus invoking the Reu's Reboot feature) it
- still goes nuts. Can't figure that one out, but otherwise I am quite content

- geoSHELL, which is a command line interface, is nearing completion. This
- interface is designed to completely replace the DeskTop if so desired. It
- allows the user to enter commands by typing them in rather than clicking on an
- icon or a drop-down menu. Anything that the DeskTop is capable of doing,
- geoSHELL can also do, plus more. Operation of geoSHELL is similar to that of
- AmigaShell on the Amiga. You can do the usual, such as load and run programs,
- copy files or whole disks, display directories (wildcards are allowed). All
- three drives are supported. The function keys are programmable. You can set a
- function key to execute your most used command for instance. There are also
- two-letter hotkey commands for loading and running the popular GEOS software.
- For instance, simply enter 'wr' and GeoWrite will be activated. geoSHELL uses
- a startup file, also. Any time that geoSHELL is activated, it will look for a
- startup file and execute any commands that it finds. The user creates the
- startup file with any version of GeoWrite. This is all I have time to tell
- about geoSHELL right now. I'll be on here from time to time to tell more about

- The release date is not definate yet, perhaps 6-8 weeks. It will be available
- from me, direct. I feel that this is the best way to distribute this program.
- It will not be shareware or public domain. I will be able to give it full
- support this way. It will be supplied with a very complete manual (printed)
- published using GeoPublish. The program is fully self-contained. In other
- words, it is fully memory resident and does not need to be on the disk that is
- in the drive. There will, however, be a routine for executing transient
- commands that reside on the disk. The manual will contain complete information
- for programmers on how to write a command to work with geoSHELL. It will
- describe addresses to access, where the command will load to, and any other
- neccessary info. The program is for the most part finished except for the copy
- routines. I just finished the whole disk copier and am now working on the file
- copy routines. It will contain an especially handy copy command that will copy
- files from one drive to another. Any files on the source disk that have a more
- recent date than the ones on the destination disk will be copied without
- prompting you. It will scratch the old files and copy the newer ones. This is
- handy for copying from the ramdisk onto your storage disk after a session at

- There are several ways to exit geoSHELL and return to the DeskTop. The easiest
- way is to click on the one single icon at the top of the geoSHELL window.
- This will take you straight to the DeskTop. Or you can enter the command
- 'desktop'. Or you can use a hotkey command 'dt'. Now if you entered geoSHELL
- from another interface such as CMD's new gateWay, you would use a different
- command. Enter the command 'exit' followed by the particular interface you
- would like to go to. Example: exit gateWay Example: exit QuickTop
- Example: exit WormDesk
-
- The proposed cost of geoSHELL will be $14.95. Orders are not being taken yet.
- However, in a few weeks, I will be looking for several people interested in
- beta testing the program. I will post a message when I'm ready.

- I've been considering the GEOS situation. GEOS 2.0 has been very good and was
- a substantial upgrade to GEOS 1.X, but with all the new products from CMD and
- other companies it's time some of GEOS' drawbacks were addressed.
-
- RAMlink has 64K of ROM on board and can access as much as 128K of ROM. That
- leaves 64K of ROM available to developers who want to enhance RAMlink. I can't
- think of a better addition to RAMlink than GEOS built in. But more than just
- building GEOS into ROM in it's current state GEOS should be optimized to take
- full advantage of being on ROM! To explain my ideas on optimization I must
- first discus how RAMlinks ROM works now. This is tricky because I don't know
- everything I need to and can only guess at RAMlinks Architecture.
-
- Ramlink first of all replaces the Kernal in the computer by the same means any
- external ROM is used to replace the one built into the commodore, by pulling
- up certain lines on the Cartidge port depending on 64/128 mode ect. Ramlink
- places a custom version of JiffyDOS in the computer that has added code to
- switch ROM banks at certain times. These times are during RAMlink Access when
- RL-DOS is swaped in, and during Parallel access to the HD. Each bank of ROM
- for those chores must have code that returns it the jiffyDOS default RAMlink
- ROM. There are contiguous 8K block of code for eack major function RAMlink
- does, and versions for 64 or 128 mode. The 128 mode JD is patched to go to the
- corrent bank wich must be accessed through RLink hardware by some kind of
- paging system. This keeps the ROM from accidently accessing the 64 ROM! GEOS
- must have 2 8K banks one for 64 and one for 128 mode set up for initializing
- the computers memory and copying the jump table for the GEOS routines to it's
- current location. But instead of the jump table pointing to the routines in
- memory, it would point to a second jump table, possible in ROM it self, that
- would contain the neccessary code to switch in the bank with the required GEOS
- routine that has been modified to run in the memory loaction of the ROM, when
- finished, it would place it's results in memory where desired and return to
- the ROM. It would bank in the proper ROM bank with the GEOS second jump table
- or perhaps the standard JiffyDOS ROM what ever is default! Since the 64 and
- 128 versions are almost identical right now they should be able to share GEOS
- routines allowing there to be only one version of GEOS in ROM rather than a
- seperate 64 and 128 version. This would require a major rewrite of GEOS
- allowing the author to correct some of GEOS shortcomings. For instance the
- doubling bits could be recognized by GEOS 64 so applications written for the
- 128 would not print at rediculous off screen loaction in 40 column mode. The
- drive swap device number that lets you turn drive C into drive A or B could be
- changes to 31(the highest device accessible on a commodore) instead of device
- number 11 wich prevent a 4th drive from being placed on the system. Kernal
- routines could be added for triangle and Circle drawing. GEOS currently has no
- kernal routine to handle these types of graphics. GEOpaint and publish install
- their own increasing there size and reducing the amount of memory for
- variables. Putting GEOS in ROM could free as much as 20K from within GEOS 64
- without loosing downward compatibility. VLIR routines could be supported from
- with standard Commodore programs. JiffyDOS routines could be used from within
- GEOS without comprimising compatibility. GEOS copyprotection routines could be
- supported by having the GEOS configuration ROM check the RAMlink system
- partition for the copy protection bytes. If it is not found it would ask for
- an offical BSW GEOS boot disk and read that byte from the key disk then copy
- it to RL's system partition. Full commodore support could be included within
- GEOS since all the standard commodore kernal routins would be there in
- JiffyDOS' ROM! I'm sure a simular proccess could be done on RAMdrive, and a
- seperate cartridge could be made for those who don't own RAMlink or RAMdrive.
- The only drawback is that this product has to be developed and BSW/Geoworks
- doesn't seem to want to do it. Maybe together we can convince them.

- Intriguing concept you have here Joe, but I have a few minor qualms...
-
- One major hurdle involved is that Geos 128 and Geos 64 ARE different. They are
- much more similar to each other than say, 64 mode and 128 mode, but as
- different as CP/M 3.0 is from CP/M 2.2! The 128 version of GEOS has a slightly
- different memory map from Geos 64, such the location of the input driver
- routines. It is at the end (Cannot recall the address) of one block of code in
- Geos 64, and at the beginning of the same block of code in the 128. The
- routines and variables supporting the 128's extra keys, the VDC display, these
- are different. Not vastly different, I know, but they sufficiently alter the
- OS to make providing one single version of GEOS a bit tricky. I think what you
- suggest can be done, but I think it would still require 2 different versions
- of the OS. 128 users would need a different GEOS rom than 64 users. Maybe I am
- way off here, I am after all far from an authority on the differences between
- 128 and 64 Geos (Bill C! where are you? This is your specialty!), but I think
- you would need 2 versions of the rom. Maybe not though; maybe it would be
- sufficient to have an area of patch code in the rom routines that would be
- invisible to 64 mode Geos, and swapped in only in 128 mode. Maybe not. Still,
- you are definitely a good ideas man Joe. Glad somebody still has novel ideas
- for the old 8 bitters
-
- As for BSW doing it: FORGET IT! They are into the PC market in a big way now,
- and doing fairly well. No way will any number of C= users convince them to re-
- allocate a part of their resources to developing such an upgrade. To them, it
- would be a waste of resources. After all, why sink the $$$ into developing a
- product that will NOT sell thousands of copies and net them a nice big profit
- like the PC market does? Facts being what they are, I simply do not see that
- enough people will own RamLinks (the only users for whom such an upgrade would
- prove desirable) to justify a new GEOS version of any stripe. Only we hardcore
- loyalists are interested these days, so it seems to me that the upgrade would
- have to be done by those who want it: US. That means reverse-engineering the
- entire Geos OS, making the changes, and then getting BSW's permission to
- distribute it. The programming of such a beast would be a real monster in and
- of itself. And getting BSW to allow you to do it would be plain impossible.
-
- Sorry, I know I am sounding defeatist here, but my experience has been that
- good, even great ideas never are enough to convince a business to do the
- sensible or desirable thing. Sad but true....

- I think if you approached BSW in the right way they would be more than
- willing to help. I don't really fault BSW (except for the disk protection)
- about not pushing the C= market heavily anymore. I don't think they could
- really sell that many more copies of anything. They have pretty much
- filled the market with GEOS, enough so that it is really about the only
- standard we have. I do agree, it is up to US, but, I look at it more as
- a pleasure vs a chore :)
- Anyways, what fun is a challenge if it isnt tough :)

- Right, you pretty much would need two separate versions of the GEOS KERNAL for
- 64 and 128... while GEOS makes things quite computer-independent to the
- application, it's not quite the same within the Kernal itself... stuff like
- D.BURR mentioned with the input driver (and the whole Bank 0 block of the 128
- version) would be a real pain with one version.
-
- You guys are basically right, you never will see this come from BSW. BUT I
- think John is right... while they wouldn't do it themselves, I have a good
- feeling they would help us out if we tried to do it. Frankly I don't think
- it's posible without source code anyway (reverse-engineering it is possible,
- but heh you can do it, not me...) and I doubt they would go that far... but
- they haven't forgotten about the 8-bit users, there could still be hope.

- I know full well about the differences between the 64 and 128 version of GEOS.
- But alot of the routines are, I beilieve, Identical. By making the 64 version
- understand doubling bits you can canablize gode for the 128 version and run it
- on a 64. Ramlink gives you 64K of ROM to do everything in! I broke this up in
- my head as follows.
- 8K Initialize GEOS 64
- 8K Initialize GEOS 128
- 8K Secondary Jump table for Banking GEOS ROM BANKS and jumping to proper
- routine.
- 8K Specific Patching for 128 optimization (VDC routines, Burst serial, Bank
- 1)
- 32K Common GEOS Routines, Graphics, Menus, Dialog Boxs, VLIR access.
-
- Under normal circumstances you would need to sqeeze GEOS down to 32K anyway.
- This way you have resonably generic version of GEOS in the 32K and the proper
- support code for eack version. Part of the 8K 128 version would be to put the
- input drivers at the proper address. Remember, you'll have 8K of RAM that can
- only be accessed by flipping out the ROM. Room enough to put routines
- dedicated to 64 or 128 mode! It will take some work, but there is no reason it
- can't be done. Also, BSW might not want to turn over GEOS to us. But if there
- is enough interest, perhaps CMD can buy the right to put GEOS on ROM from BSW!
- RAMlink sales are doing stupendously well according to Charly Jr. at CMD. And
- even Hard drives are back odered. BSW's Copy protection could be supported
- making the GEOS routines only really usefull to GEOS owners. The information
- could be stored in RAMlinks system partition. A stand alone cartidge is not
- impossible either! In fact I'm going to attept to develop this on a Quick
- Brown Box! All it takes is interst!
