- Jon brings up a very good point. With a REU, or better yet a RAMLink or

- Jon: My CATALOG program does something similar to what you want. You

- What sort of hardware do you have that you want to use with a RAMdisk, and
- what software do you want to use a RAMdisk with? The standard RAMdisk for
- 17xx REU's is Commodore's RAMDOS, a version of which does indeed exist in the
- libraries here (do a search on the string "ramdos"). The latest version has
- been modified to support up to 2 Meg REU's (though it still supports the
- normal 128K, 256K, and 512K REU's), and is version 4.5.
-
- The down side is, a _lot_ of software does not work with RAMDOS. Some
- software is written to work with RAMDOS (e.g. Dialogue128, RTCM), and other
- software has its own REU RAMdisk driver built in (e.g. GEOS, Pocket Writer),
- and some software will work with RAMDOS just because you are lucky. However,
- I would expect that the bulk of commercial software will not work with RAMDos.
-
- These days, your best bet for a RAM disk is a RAMLink... if you already have
- an REU, the RAMLink can use the REU's memory, and make a RAMdisk up to the
- size of the REU. This also has the added advantage of a separate power source
- from the computer, so if you keep the RAMLink plugged in, the contents of the
- RAM disk are not lost when you turn off the computer. Unfortunately, a
- RAMLink does involve some financial outlay, and if your budget for this fiscal
- year has already been shot....

- Speaking of ACE, I managed to get my hands on the latest release of ACE,
- Version 8. It came wrapped in ascii as a bunch of uuencoded files. It is
- vastly enhanced with many more modules.
-
- My original intent was to uudecode them, then make an ARC so that it could be
- uploaded here.
-
- Alas, all the resultant PRG files which I made with UUXFER would not run.
- Really has me miffed, since this never happened before.
-
- I quess I could try uudecoding on the Unix, and downloading the PRG files Unix
- makes. Prob is tho, they would be the same which UUXFER makes in any event.
- And then since I have to downlaod with Kermit is a prob. Kermit on a 14.4k
- modem is fast. So speed is not the prob. The prob is that Kermit (at least
- the 64 and 128 versions of Kermit) do not offer batch downloading, and it does
- get tiresome downloading batches of little files.
-
- Thinking about it, I quess this is why ACE comes wrapped in one big ASCII
- file.
-
- Now, if someone can get the parts to run.....

- I know of a good one for the 64. It is called 'Dicsk Catalog

- Message to B.Masse:
-
- I also use DCMR (Disk Cataloger, ManeaManager, Reporter) to print out multiple
- columns, but it handles SIX columns in compressed mode, not just four.
-
- Two limitations. First, if you plan to enter names from directory, not (note)
- that you can only read 145 filenames into memory at a time. This is just
- enough for 1541 disks, but it comes up short for 1571/81. Second, if you try
- to use 1581 sub-partitions, you are out of luck because DCMR always knocks you
- back out to the root directory.
-
- Message to E.G.Bell:
-
- I have tried a number of 128 cataloging programs in the hopes of finding an
- equivalent to DCMR. Some of those 128 programs I tried looked really good, but
- did not allow six-column printing or even manual entry of filenames. Four-
- character ID's were out of the question; only the ID from each disk directory
- qualified. Talk about inflexibility!! Sorry, DCMR - quirky as it is - has no
- peer in 8-bit Commodore!

- I wrote an all ML directory reader for the 128. What it does is store the

- using your own database program. (For example, Superbase.) Should work on 41,
- 71, etc or any CMD device. It does not automatically follow partitions though.
-
- Any interest in this? I don't know how much more work there would be to make
- it stand-alone (ie: work by itself without requiring a database). I've never
- programmed REL or random files. I know I'd have to learn a lot more ML to make

-
- I use it with Superbase. I have 2 databases with over 20,000 records. (That's
- right, twenty thousand!) One is for a user group library, and the other one is

- Seems you missed the point... it does not require Superbase. That is the
- database I choose to use. It should work with any database that allows
- petascii import files. GEOS disks read like garbage though. Will have to learn
- about GEOS format to support that. I said above that it does not automatically
- follow partitions. I meant to say subdirectories. The program has gone through
- beta testing. To be released as commerical I think I would need to make it
- stand-alone. That would take a lot more programming though. It does have some
- bugs I would like to take care of. But it does "work". So would anyone be
- interested in a disk cataloger that read in your disks, but required you to
- use your own database prg to import the data? supports CMD devices, but does
- not automatically follow subdirectories. Does not support GEOS format disks.

-
- No, the filenames are not filed with the disk name, per say. But rest assured
- that you can both sort the filenames AND have them in disk order as well. I
- know a lot of disk catalogers don't let you do that.
-
- So, is there any interest in a disk catalog system that expects you to use

-
- A lot more work would need to go into it to make it a stand-alone database

-
- Let me know what your opinions are.
