- GEOS RTC Night Tuesday
-
- Date: 931221==================================================================
-
- Guest: Jim Collette, programmer
- Host: GEOS-TIM
-
- This is one of a series of conferences with people who have or have had an
- impact on the 64/128 Commodore world. Jim Collette is a programmer that has
- written such programs as GeoWizard, Batch Loader, MiniDesk, and GateWay. The
- Commodore RT felt fortunate to have him in as a guest.
- We are starting the transcripts soon after Jim enters the RTC, and before
- the actual conference starts. The conference is being saved by Cam Stewart,
- THE.OUTLAW, as it progresses. Light editing by Cam Stewart, and Tim Hewelt.

- <JIM.COLLETTE> Cross-examination! no!! please stop!! ack!!
- <GEOS-TIM> We haven't started yet, Jim
- <D.CRIST> Something screws up in the DACC.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> You can't use the 64 and 128 versions in the same partition?!
- <JIM.COLLETTE>
- <GEOS-TIM> But a 9600 baud patch would be nice, as well as a chat mode
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Yeah you will know it when we start. :)
- <D.CRIST> I had to reconfigure the whole sustem.
- <GEOS-TIM> How big of a DACC do you have?
- <D.CRIST> Went back to the regular desktop.
- <D.CRIST> I went up to 2500!

- <GEOS-TIM> geoCnavas needs a pretty big DACC especially if you use Switcher, or
- GeoWizard
- <D.CRIST> They must use the same type of files so that one trashes the other.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Let's do TCP/IP for GEOS! anyone working on any ethernet boards?
- LOL :)
- <D.CRIST> Either is ok, both is a no-no.
- <GEOS-TIM> I never got on an ethernet
- <GEOS-TIM> does it put you to sleep?
- <D.CRIST> I use desktop with 1581 partitions and it is fine.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> LOL Tim!! :)
- <CMD-DOUG> Were you using Native partitions with gateWay?
- <D.CRIST> Yes.
- <CMD-DOUG> That was more likely the problem then.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I still wish I could find the problems with native mode.. :(
- <CMD-DOUG> We think there is a bug that causes errant writes with the Native
- BAM routines.
- <D.CRIST> Now I use My reu for the DACC and 2meg for 2 1581 partitions.
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> Hello everyone
- <D.CRIST> OK. I will buy a copy of the new version if you guys write one.
- <CMD-DOUG> Jim, I'm surprised you're here... won't the folks on INET miss you?
- :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Now now, Doug... :)
- <GEOS-TIM> Jim always arises to the heighth of the Commie community.
- <CMD-DOUG> Heh, okay, okay...
- <GEOS-TIM> That is why he is in the GEOS DEN
- <D.CRIST> Tim, does Davids Topdesk work well on a regular GEOS system?
- <GEOS-TIM> You mean with no REU?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Well, I try to Tim.. I miss the good ole days when we ruled
- supreme!! :)
- <D.CRIST> No, I meant without gateway. Im thinking on getting it.
- <GEOS-TIM> That is what we are starting here, Jim
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Hey Jim, just out of curosity what does your system consist
- of?
- <GEOS-TIM> TopDesk sort of stand alone
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> It is proably huge comparted to mine.
- <GEOS-TIM> Good question.....Dan starts the cross examination
- <GEOS-TIM> Lets see if Jim remembers.LOL
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Hey why not. :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Hmmm, 128, 1571, 1581, FD-2000, RL, HD, SwiftLink, etc..
- <GEOS-TIM> No , I'M serious,,it is a good question
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> How about a modem, Jim??
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Got an old 2400 Supra on the 128.
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Thanks, it is about time I had a good one. :)
- <GEOS-TIM> I have a Supra, myself. Two infact
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> That is what I've got.
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> well, I got ya beat in 1 catagory, anyway...
- <GEOS-TIM> How big is your HD, Jim?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I do some of my development work on the Amiga too. Got a 14.4
- Supra over there.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> a measly 40 megger... :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> but don't get me started on adding up the other computers!!
- <GEOS-TIM> That's forty more than I have.:D
- <GEOS-TIM> What other computers do you have, JIm?
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Hey that is better that what I've got.. ...none! :(
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> Just don't say IBxxx, Jim!!!!
- <JIM.COLLETTE> my dorm room up at school looks like a Hard Drives International
- stockroom...
- <CMD-DOUG> That's right... you converted a cross-assembler to do your GEOS
- programming?
- <GEOS-TIM> Welcome to the Jim Collette conference!
- <D.PARKER36> hiyas :)
- JIM.COLLETTE>.Yep... it's standard C (the cross-assembler), it runs fine on
- Unix too (real fast there).
- <D.PARKER36> well, pleasure to meet you Jim
- <JIM.COLLETTE> ack Eddie, yep I've got a 486 and a 386... but I run GEOS and
- Unix on em... :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Did someone say beer?
- <GEOS-TIM> Don't you have an Amiga, also?
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> How do you run GEOS on a 386?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> yep, the trusty Amiga too! :)
- <D.CRIST> PC GEOS?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> PC GEOS... right.
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> Well, I must confess, I'm saving for a nice 486 system,
- but I still love my commodore 128
- <CMD-DOUG> Jim, are most of your programming projects school assignments now?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Yep, Doug... mostly school stuff... one of our projects was to
- sort of design a CPU and write the microcode for it... that one was
- interesting...
- <JIM.COLLETTE> 486s are fast but 128s are still a lot more fun I think.
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> That does sound intersting.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> DOS is really lame.
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> REALLY REALLY LAME
- <JIM.COLLETTE> So what's been happening in the GEOS world the past few months?
- Someone's gonna have to clue ME in, I've been really out of touch!!!
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> I hate ibm's as well. :p
- <D.CRIST> GeoCanvas is nice!
- <GEOS-TIM> A couple of programmers have come up with some great programs
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> CMD stoped selling RAMDRIVE.
- <GEOS-TIM> geoShell is one of them
- <GEOS-TIM> written by Maurice Randall
- <GEOS-TIM> TopDesk is in the American market....dist. by Quincy Software
- Message sent to Job 10
- <CMD-DOUG> C:\DOS C:\DOS\RUN \RUN\DOS\RUN C:\DOS\CRASH
- <CMD-DOUG> Oops.
- <CMD-DOUG> :)
- <D.CRIST> My opinion exactly!
- <GEOS-TIM> And we have a new Desktop Publishing program for the 128 coming in
- the spring
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Is that the one Maurice is working on?
- <D.CRIST> I will pay ANYTHING for that!
- <D.PARKER36> can I ask an unrelated question here?
- <GEOS-TIM> Yes...I saw it....looks good
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> (A)bort (R)etry (N)uke
- <GEOS-TIM> Go a head, Parker
- <CMD-DOUG> Yeah Jim. And you should check out his geoMorph in the libs if you
- get a chance.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Cool!!
- <D.PARKER36> well Im new at the fido echoes..
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> What is the file name for geomorph?
- <D.PARKER36> been tryin to use qwkrr
- <JIM.COLLETTE> geoMorph?!
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> Is It good, Doug??
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> I mean number.
- <GEOS-TIM>
- <D.PARKER36> the qso on my local board zips the .qwk packets
- <CMD-DOUG> It's pretty neat, yes.
- <CMD-DOUG> GEOMORPH.SFX I think.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Cool!! I'm kinda surprised someone did that!! neat!
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> I was thinking of d/l, but I wanted to get some feedback
- first.
- <D.PARKER36> I cant un-arc the file csxtra42.lzh with lhx under csdos
- <CMD-DOUG> He plans to put a more extensive version of it into his FINALLY!
- program.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> What's that (FINALLY!) supposed to be?
- <D.CRIST> I kinda hope FINALLY! will be able to use color.
- <CMD-DOUG> That's what he calls his 128 Publishing program, Jim.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> (the desktop publisher?)
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> A new desktop publishing program.
- <GEOS-TIM> Finally is a DTP that uses 360dpi files
- <JIM.COLLETTE> ah... ok.
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> You should see if you can choose the Archiver that it uses
- to pack the QWK packet. If you can, you should choose ZIP, as there is a
- program here on GEnie that will allow you to unzip IBxxx ZIPed Files.
- <GEOS-TIM> Anyone have an answer for Parkers question?
- <C128-QT.PIE> NO
- <CMD-DOUG> Actually, you can set the resolution of the documents to match your
- printer.
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> I know the wildcat board I call lets you choose what
- format you want
- <GEOS-TIM> Yes...360 dpi the best.
- <D.CRIST> Im waiting for it before I buy a ps lazer.
- <D.PARKER36> the board doesnt give the option of how the packet is arced
- <GEOS-TIM> If you have a bubblejet or laser
- <GEOS-TIM> I have a question, Jim.....How old were you when you wrote your
- first program?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> First program? Hmm, I'm not sure if anything qualified as real
- programs back then!! or do you mean first GEOS program? :)
- <GEOS-TIM> No...just first program...then tell us about your first GEOS program
- <S.EYRSE> Yes but let me check your ID Eddie..
- <JIM.COLLETTE> beer?
- <W.OVE> good evening all
- <JIM.COLLETTE> first program at all? wow, I dunno... 7 or 8 I guess. they were
- nothing back then though! just crummy BASIC stuff.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I think the first GEOS one was Font Editor, I guess I was 13...
- <CMD-DOUG> Hey! I STILL write crummy BASIC stuff! :)
- <CMD-DOUG> ::grin::
- <GEOS-TIM> Font editor is a great program
- <JIM.COLLETTE> LOL Doug!! your crummy BASIC stuff is a [heck] of a lot better
- than mine ever was!!
- <JIM.COLLETTE> ack, got quiet!! (I bet I have bad breath!)
- <GEOS-TIM> Is everyone here familiar with Jim's programs?
- <S.EYRSE> I think messages a flying just not on the "Big Board.".. so how is
- school?
- <D.CRIST> I still use jims programs dayin and day out.
- <D.PARKER36> know of them, just havent bought them yet :)

- <JIM.COLLETTE> School is excellent!! (Christmas break!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
- <D.CRIST> I think I have MOST of jims Geos progs.
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> I think I only have a few
- <GEOS-TIM> How many use GeoWizard?
- <D.CRIST> They are a must!
- <JIM.COLLETTE> only a few! ack!! the horror!!!!
- <D.CRIST>
- <JIM.COLLETTE> (LOL!!!!)
- <D.PARKER36> well I would have bought them all, but I NEEDED an FD4000 first :)
- <D.CRIST> I do.
- <W.OVE> I hear about geo wizard but don't know what it does?
- <D.CRIST> Allows multitasking.
- <GEOS-TIM> Jim...What does GeoWizard do?
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Are they as good as people say (the fd's).
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> Sorry,Jim but I wasn't into GEOS big time, but I am now
- finding myself using it quite a bit
- <D.PARKER36> well I think so, I think its the greatest
- <JIM.COLLETTE> geoWizard is a magical program, it doubles the memory on your
- computer and makes it run 5 times faster, plus it comes with beautiful women as
- well!
- <GEOS-TIM> LOL
- ** <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> is here.
- <GEOS-TIM> Welcome to the Jim Collette conference!
- <JIM.COLLETTE> howdy Wiz!
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Hey if that is true, where can I get it! :))))
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Seriously it just lets you break out of almost any program
- you're running to start up something else, then get back to the first one when
- you're done.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Sorry QT... :)
- <D.PARKER36> well if you want an fd, talk to Doug :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> (I go to Clarkson, where the men look like men and the women
- look like men (and the sheep run like.....)... you have to excuse my warped
- sense of humor :D
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Sounds like gateway's switcher.
- <D.CRIST> Hi Ard!
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Hello Folks I'm back
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Re Ard! :)
- <S.EYRSE> Jim do you remember how you did it. Store the name of the old one
- some where to reload..
- <GEOS-TIM> Not quite like Switcher.....
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Oh whats diffent?
- <GEOS-TIM> You can open an application while in an application with geoWiz
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Nope Steve, it just dumps the memory out to the REU and fetches
- it back when it's done.
- <D.CRIST> Switcher is neat, but S L O W!
- <GEOS-TIM> You can open a DA within a DA
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Sorry to have left so quickly--but CAT BARF & Christmas
- tree emergency.
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Where could I get it?
- <GEOS-TIM> Thanks for sharing that with us. LOL
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Cat barf!!! ICK!!! :(
- <GEOS-TIM> It is on the Collette Utilities disk from CMD
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Thanks
- <C128-QT.PIE> LOL, Chuck!
- <D.CRIST> Thats a great disk!
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> What is all on that disk?
- <GEOS-TIM> I think I like your MiniDesk more than anything, Jim.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Switcher is neat too, it's a more generalized switching
- concept... I just wish I could figure out completely how it works!!
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> What is minidesk?
- <GEOS-TIM> And of course GateWay 2.5 was great
- <GEOS-TIM> Go ahead Jim, tell them about MiniDesk.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> There is another Switcher Program too, thAt I don't
- think you created Jim.
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Hello everyone! :)
- <GEOS-TIM> Hi Wiz !
- <W.OVE> Inever had any luck with switcher except it swittched my computer to
- lock up mode.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> MiniDesk was an interesting one, I did it as a freebie
- originally and a lot of people wound up liking it more than geoWiz!! :)
- <S.EYRSE>
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Does geowizard work in gateway?
- <GEOS-TIM> I use it all the time
- <JIM.COLLETTE> (it just lets you copy/delete/rename files as a DA)
- <GEOS-TIM> Yes. it does Dan
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Jim you should see what happens with geoSHELL and
- geoWizard together--or have
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> you?
- <S.EYRSE> Is minidisk here? or still on (that other place) ;)
- <GEOS-TIM> It is on the Utility disk
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I don't think I have the latest version of geoShell... :( (gasp)
- <GEOS-TIM> It isn't PD anymore
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Speaking of that other place---
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> V2.2?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> MiniDesk never was online, it was always on the disk.
- <D.PARKER36> Doug, you guys have the C language disk for 128?
- <CMD-DOUG> Nope. Sure don't. None made anymore that I'm aware of.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I dunno Ard... Maurice sent me a beta version a few years ago
- but I don't think I've got anything more recent. Maybe I do somewhere... I know
- I never ordered it.
- <CMD-DOUG> Other than for CP/M, that is.
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Hey Jim, did you hear about the C65?
- <S.EYRSE> K going to HAVE TO get the disk..;) Yes Ard of that other place.?
- <D.PARKER36> drat, it was from abacas wasnt it?
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> I have Super C, but it's for the 64, not 128
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I've heard bits and rumors, Dan... does anyone actually have one?<[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> We have started having a session on mondays
- again--right Ron?
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> I believe software support still sells Super C 128
- <CMD-DOUG> We're talking now with Abacus about producing some of their
- out-of-print stuff.
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Doug, feeling better today, I hope? :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I just talked to one of my friends (Ray) this afternoon who said
- he was still waiting for his....
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Right, Chuck! Hope it holds out for awhile... :)
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> I don't know. But last I knew, no one I know.
- <GEOS-TIM> What gave you the idea to write Font Editor 2.5?
- <[Eddie] E.BOURDON1> Geez!!!!!!
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> HOT CHOCOLATE!!!!
- <JIM.COLLETTE> heh Tim.... Font Editor 2.4! (sorry.... :)
- <S.EYRSE> Say Doug I don't know if anyone has publicly said THANKS for jumping
- into Geos before it all sorta slipped into the
- <S.EYRSE> S.F. bay..
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Slowly I turned, step by step by step....
- <GEOS-TIM> Ya, what got you into writing the Font Editor?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> It was originally a 1.x version in compiled BASIC (good ole
- Austro-Speed...). then I re-did it in ML for the heck of it.
- <CMD-DOUG> Thanks RR. :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Howdy Maurice!! LTNS!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Hi Jim.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Hows our favorite Genius?
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> You mean Jim?
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> No you shy guy you.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> LOL Maurice I think it's you!! :D
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Jim isn't around often enough to be a "favorite"
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I just do what I like.
- <GEOS-TIM> No....it was me. LOL
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Hiya, Maurice! :)
- <CMD-DOUG> BRB... I need a stiff drink... or even a wobbly one.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> ACKHPTHHHHHHH
- <JIM.COLLETTE> ::pooh:: (I admit, I'm not around at all!!)
- <W.OVE> Mr. Collette are you doing any geos programing now?
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Let's all go to the Landing Strip. Doug can get a stiff
- one there.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Doug wants a stiff one?
- <D.PARKER36> uh oh, the crowd turns ugly
- <D.PARKER36> :DD
- <JIM.COLLETTE> call me Jimbo!!! I'm not actively doing anything right now,
- although I'm sort of still trying to work on gateWay... Doug is probably ready
- to shoot me in the
- <[dan] J.BARBER9> Hey Maurice how is FINALLY comming?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> back of the head though!!!
- <GEOS-TIM> LOL
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Don't anybody say it!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> It will be appropriately named when it is ready.
- <GEOS-TIM> If he shoots you he won't get it done....by you anyway.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> This is a family network
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> HUHH hehStiff one heh heh
- <GEOS-TIM> JIm you have to tell me now about how you decided to write Font
- Editor.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Maurice did my explination make sense?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> LOL Tim!!!!!!!!!!! Good one.....
- <D.PARKER36> well didnt see super c in the ssi cat
- <[Anthony] A.HELM> Evening, all.
- <GEOS-TIM> I have always wondered about a 13 year old sitting at his computer,
- and coming
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I don't remember exactly why I did it Tim, I think that there
- were a lot of people that wanted one and I don't recall there being any good
- ones available...
- <GEOS-TIM> It is an excellent program
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I know Fran Kostella had started one of his own and he sent me a
- lot of the info he had on the fonts and stuff.. and I put together a BASIC
- version. it was slow
- <JIM.COLLETTE> as heck but it worked for the most part.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> That's the one.
- <S.EYRSE> So Jim when you started doing Geos, was programer and the ref.
- material out there or did you just HACK your way thru?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> oh, heck no!! I had the reference guide. Didn't have
- geoProgrammer though, I used a shareware assembler called geoCope.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I used to read the reference guide all the time, it was my
- favorite book!
- <S.EYRSE> Oh yes from someone in Texas.. I had that first. Never got the guide
- been using hitchicker and mapping the 64 (which
- <S.EYRSE> has a lot of errors)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Hitchhiker's... now there is a neat book... I remember when I
- first got that one... it was like "WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- cool!!"

- <GEOS-TIM> Thank you for your question. :) -Tim
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Hmm... Ah! Here it is! Chat mode! Perfect! :DDD
- <CMD-DOUG> Yes, though we haven't decided what to do with that yet. We don't
- even have a
- <CMD-DOUG> master at this point to produce it.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I think hitchhiker's is practically PD...
- <D.PARKER36> umm...whats hitchhikers?
- <D.PARKER36> guide to the universe?
- <CMD-DOUG> We're looking into that, though, as well as contacting BANTAM about
- the PRG.
- <GEOS-TIM> It is a programming manual for GEOS that has handwritten notes in
- themargins
- <W.OVE> CMD has the right to Berkley's Geos?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Hitchhiker's Guide to GEOS... a big compilation of programming
- info for 64, 128, and Apple GEOS.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I've got a Master if you need one Doug. Right from
- Berkeley.
- <S.EYRSE> Sorta the notes that the OFFICAL prog. ref. guide was writen from.
- <GEOS-TIM> You do?
- <D.PARKER36> oh, thanks
- <CMD-DOUG> Maurice, the kind of 'master' we need to get is film.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Well, as master as they come... LOL :)
- <S.EYRSE> What a one off zerox..:)...I've got that..LOL
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I'll go get 20 rolls of 35 mm then.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I remember having dad run off copies of that for people at work,
- man he didn't like that one bit!!!
- <S.EYRSE> with MY own notes. added..:)
- <CMD-DOUG> We should be getting it soon, though. We've got the film masters to
- most of the
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Gosh this Technical talk is amazing.
- <CMD-DOUG> manuals now.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Really Doug? Cool, I didn't know you had them!
- <GEOS-TIM> Welcome to the Jim Collette conference!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Too bad you can't also get the rights from Bantam on the
- original one.
- <D.PARKER36> well with all this geos wizardry here, I wanna know something
- <CMD-DOUG> We're working on that, Maurice.
- <GEOS-TIM> Alright Parker?
- <A.FRANCHI1> Hey, Tim. I'm considering moving up to GEOS - honest!!
- <D.PARKER36> will geoProgammer work with geos128 in 40 col mode?
- <GEOS-TIM> Great!!!
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Yep!!!
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> yep
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Even in 80 with the patches.
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> and 80 too
- <A.FRANCHI1> Anyone have one for sale - cheap?
- <W.OVE> except for debugger.
- <GEOS-TIM> Where are the patches?
- <D.PARKER36> it will? great, Doug expect a call first payday after Christmas :)
- <GEOS-TIM> Have what for sale?
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Over in the other place Tim
- <CMD-DOUG> The patches will be in the libs soon.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> They're online... I imagine they should be in the libs here
- somewhere...
- <S.EYRSE> I've posted this before but did Programer V2.0, other than Debugger
- EVER come out?
- <GEOS-TIM> I suppose they are.....
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I know they are on the "other" (dead) system...
- <CMD-DOUG> No Steve.
- <GEOS-TIM> No Programmer 2
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> That's where I got them anyway.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Doug, you should get Jim to finish GeoProgrammer 2.0
- <GEOS-TIM> Yes Wiz
- <JIM.COLLETTE> LOL Maurice!!!!
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Except the "documentation for 2.0 was uploaded
- <CMD-DOUG> Just to each other, Wiz. Not 'real' mail.
- <GEOS-TIM> Well at least from folks in the room
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Oh well, just wishing.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> i'm not even sure what the benefits to Assembler/Linker 2.0 were
- supposed to be, other than working in 80 columns...
- <CMD-DOUG> I'd like him to finish gateWay, first, if that's okay? :)
- <[Ardmore855] C.GRIFOR> Maurice why don't you do it???
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Is there a mail command, or do you use "/sen"?
- <GEOS-TIM> Well, when Finally finally comes..than you can tackle that,
- Maruice.:D
- <S.EYRSE> to bad I just read a file that I.Cobb put here that talked about what
- it was goning to be like..
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I need more labels and more source code files in the
- linker.
- <GEOS-TIM> I would like him to do that too....gosh....such demands on his time.
- <CMD-DOUG> Maurice, get Jim's version for the Amiga. :)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Was it going to support more labels? hmmm... you got an Amiga? :)
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I'm on one right now.
- <S.EYRSE> It was written by DeSoto one of the BSW programers and explained
- where they were going with vrs 2.0
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I've got the both 128 running next to me working on
- the...
- <W.OVE> I want a really good geos database..(superbase kinda thing).
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> ...geoSHELL Programmer's Development Package.
- <A.FRANCHI1> I can't find it. A friend sent me a GEOS disk, but it keeps
- telling me I can't do that from the desktop, so I ...
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I'll have to send you the cross-assembler, Maurice... what CPU
- in the Amiga?
- <A.FRANCHI1> don't know what good it is - to me!!
- <S.EYRSE> Yes Geo calc is very lacking in what it will do and how BIG a file it
- will work with.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> 68000 with 2.5 megs and hard drive (2.5 inch inside the
- 500)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> ah... hmm, it won't be too bad, not blazingly fast but still
- probably faster than the 128. The only drawback is that it's just an assembler,
- no linker... so you
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> How do you get the files transferred quickly to the 128
- for testing though?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> have to do everything each time you assemble. But on mine (with
- the 030) it's still far faster than the 128.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> I have a FAST cable run between them, and the assembler outputs
- files in "converted" format.. so I just send em over to the 128 and convert
- them.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I'll send you the latest geoSHELL. It now has a convert
- command.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> It took me a while to get used to the system but I really like
- it now, the text editors on the Amiga are so much nicer to use for programming
- work, it speeds things up a lot.
- ** <[Anthony] A.TOLLE> is here.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Especially being able to look at multiple source files at one
- time, while the 128 is running... etc.
- <GEOS-TIM> Hi Anthony
- <GEOS-TIM> Welcome to the Jim Collette conference!
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Convert built in? that's cool!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> No, it's an external command but works quickly.
- <CMD-DOUG> geoShell really has a lot of great features now.
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Well folks, since this is my first night on GEnie, I
- guess I'd better go look
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> around a bit.... <GEOS-TIM> Thanks for coming in Wiz
- <S.EYRSE> REALLY.. well welcome aboard..
- <JIM.COLLETTE> First night? Wow! Have fun exploring!!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Wait till you see this new package that I will upload
- sometime during the holidays.
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Take care, and we'll see you next week. :)
- <CMD-DOUG> Nice seeing you Ron... it is Ron, right?
- <GEOS-TIM> Okay...be looking forward to it....Ron
- <GEOS-TIM> If Doug is right
- <[Wizardry] R.ROSENLOF> Itis, Doug. :)
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Only programmers will be interested in it though.
- <CMD-DOUG> BTW, if you type /NAM Ron you could let us know that! :)
- <S.EYRSE> Oh sure putting your trust in Doug..:)
- <JIM.COLLETTE> What's that, Maurice? The geoShell dev pak?
- ** <[Dave] D.PARKER36> was <D.PARKER36>.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Yes, it's about 200 pages.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Wow!!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> It details all the routines that are accessible plus
- sample source code.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> Wow... you really went all-out!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Laid out like the Hitchiker's Guide.
- <GEOS-TIM> Sounds great.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> There are 101 routines in the jump table.
- <JIM.COLLETTE> sheesh!!!
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> No dalmations?
- <JIM.COLLETTE> LOL!!!!!
- <GEOS-TIM> Night Amirtra
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Night Anitra!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> What platforms are you working on mostly now Jim?
- ** <[Bill] S.EYRSE> was <[Steve] S.EYRSE>.
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> Hi R.Boyles.
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> Welcome to the Jim Collette conference!
- <R.BOYLES2> evening.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Not really anything as we speak, but in general still a
- little CBM GEOS and trying to get into PC GEOS. And I do a little generic
- (unix) C stuff here and there.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I'm sure I missed some stuff here, but what besides
- gateWay are you doing in GEOS?
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> well, that's basically it... although I can't even seem
- to get that one done!!
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> LOL
- <[Tony] A.TOLLE> Re's... :)
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Can I put in some suggestions?
- ** <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> SUGGESTION HOUR
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Heh, he can send you the source and you can, sure. :)
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> I'm always open to suggestions!
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> Yes you can jump in Tony
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> ROFL Doug!!!!!!
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> (how true...)
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Allow GEOS filetypes up to #99...
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> ...keep gateWay from trashing drive D...
- <[Tony] A.TOLLE> he he he... I don't know if people
- want
- me to jump in
- though... :)
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Filetypes to 99? not sure I understand that one...
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> They probably won't listen...I had to put it in listen mode.
- LOL^=
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> ...don't move the subdir pointers in the disk drivers,
- please!
- ** <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> TECHNICAL TALK!!!!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> geoSHELL transient commands are filetype 21...
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> gateWay only recognizes up to #17
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> oh, you mean the physical locations of the subdir ptr?
- (like $9060 or whatever)?
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Yes, leave em where they are.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> What does gateWay do with the geoShell commands?
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Ah.. gotcha on the drivers... that stuff is all staying
- the same.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> It doesn't hurt them, it just says they are hard drive
- or something.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> hmm... should it recognize them as geoShell?
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Maybe you can just identify them as not recognized.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> .... or that would work too
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Probably lobbing off the bits it isn't concerned with and
- falling through.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> geoSHELL will say ??? in the directory listing for
- anything it doesn't know.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> I didn't realize it was turning up false types... guess
- I've just never seen anything other than the known ones before.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Must be it indexes past a certain point.
- <[Dave] D.PARKER36> gotta run all, thanks for all the info
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Yep... that one doesn't sound too hard.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> If a stray file with a weird filetype of around 50 or so
- pops up...
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> Night Dave
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> Thanks for coming....stop in again
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Take care Dave!
- ** <[Dave] D.PARKER36> has left.
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> you could have a big crash when GEOS tries to print some
- strange byte.
- <[steve] S.EYRSE> That is the hang up with not haveing a clearing house that
- WORKED till now I was working on a NLQ driver and almost
- <[steve] S.EYRSE> had it changing the code in GeosWrite but only for the 64
- this would have screwed it up for the 128..
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> ack!! that would have been ugly!!
- <[steve] S.EYRSE> But colorfull ::: ;)
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> yeah... how true.... some crashes are kinda pretty
- sometimes!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Also, with four drives running, users have to switch
- drive D out before going to gateWay.
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> LOL
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> On another subject...
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Jim, would a SwiftLink driver for laser printers be
- possible?
- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> Thank you for your question. :) -Tim
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> 4 drives... yeah, that's something I've never really
- tried before.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> just a generic RS-232 you mean? as a printer driver or
- like in geoPubLaser/etc/?
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Right.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> I would think so...
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> You'd have to use a null-modem cable, though, right?
- <[steve] S.EYRSE> four drives is the deal.. TopDesk from Gem.. is slick for
- that..
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> hmm... not if you hooked it right up to the printer...
- <[Tony] A.TOLLE> I think a regular RS-232 cable would probably be fine, since
- those type of printers use standard RS-232 (like a modem) anyway, right?
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Seems to me that the printers require different line
- settings... DCE instead
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> of DTE or the opposite...
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> You must be talking about LaserWriters?
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Really? Hmm... I'm not sure about that, dunno what sort
- of handshaking they use.
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Thinking of the OMNITRONIX DELUXE RS-232, which has
- switches to change it from
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> modem to printer setting...
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> I'll have to check the manual on mine sometime, I've
- never used the serial port on it though...
- <[Tony] A.TOLLE> Well.. if the printer is actually the device, it should accept
- the signals as a RS-232 device and not a terminal... well, it seems it should
- be that way...
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> I'll have to tear apart my Omintronix sometime and see
- what they do.
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Yeah, i'd be curious to see just what they change... I
- don't think I've ever heard of them being treated differently... ?
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> I've got an RS-232 book at work, which probably has it
- documented.
- <[steve] S.EYRSE> I just grabed the HP book for the wifes Lazer 4 what should I
- look for?
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> I'll check that.
- <[Tony] A.TOLLE> RS-232 pin outs.
- <[GUOD-DMC] CMD-DOUG> Anything about the RS-232. :)
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Just look for stuff on the serial interface...

- <[Tim] GEOS-TIM> You like it eh?
- <[Jimbo] JIM.COLLETTE> Man I wonder what the 5 will be like!! prolly 1200 dpi!!
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> Here it is...
- <[steve] S.EYRSE> the default confign for the serial port on the HP is for
- RS-232C serial comm. I would work with RS-422 if needed/
- <[Tony] A.TOLLE> RS-232"C".. maybe thats the secret...
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> If a computer port is configured to emulate DCE...
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> or provide the RS232 signals normally provided by a
- modem,...
- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> then a terminal (DTE) could be directly connected to the

- <[Maurice] M.RANDALL2> I just typed that in from a book I've got here.
- <[steve] S.EYRSE> default baud rate is 9600
