  23. This topic contains information about SID music files, the most common  music
  24. files for the 64 and 128, how to order the program to make them, and how to
  25. order the SID Symphony cartridge allowing 6 voice stereo.

  33. Some of the finest music files made for the 64 have been created with the
  34. SIDplayer program developed by Craig Chamberlain.  These files are often
  35. called "SIDs" for short.  Many of these files are here in the Flagship
  36. library.  You can download them and play them using a suitable player program
  37. such as STEREOPLAYER V10.3 also available here (STEREOSID103.SDA - file
  38. #7987). As the  program' name suggests, there are also stereo files available
  39. but these require the addition of a hardware cartridge to add a second  SID
  40. (Sound Interface Device) chip.  (See message 3 in this topic for  ordering
  41. information).  The STEREOPLAYER is designed to support the second chip if
  42. present, but it is probably ALSO the best player program for conventional
  43. SIDs.

  45. SID music files can be easily recognized by the extensions after the 
  46. filename.  Basicly there are two types of files:
  47.  
  48.    .mus - Music file
  49.    .wds - Words file
  50.  
  51. In the case of stereo SIDs a second music file is added:
  52.  
  53.    .str - Stereo music file 
  54.  
  55.  
  56.  
  57. The program will also display full screen graphics files as the music plays 
  58. such as Koala or Doodle graphics:

  60.    .pic - Picture file
  61.    .pgg - Compressed picture file
  62.  
  63. These files are typically archived in self-dissolving files with some other
  64. special extensions:
  65.  
  66.    .sal - .mus + .wds
  67.    .wpl - .mus + .wds + .pic
  68.    .slr - .mus + .str
  69.    .msw - .mus + .str + .wds
  70.  
  71. Therefore, if you download a file that ends with ".mus" it is ready to be
  72. played on the STEREOPLAYER.  If you download a file that ends with ".sal",
  73. ".slr", ".msw", or ".sda" simply LOAD and RUN them like any BASIC program to
  74. dissolve them into their component files.

  93. The SID Symphony cartridge allows you to hear SIDs in true stereo with 6 
  94. notes, or voices, playing at once!  The SID chip can produce 3 voices at a 
  95. time. The SID Symphony cartridge adds a second SID chip and, consequently, 3
  96. more voices.

  98. You simply insert the cartridge and connect the cart and the computer audio
  99. output to a stereo amplifier system. Then boot up STEREOPLAYER and play back
  100. stereo SIDs in true stereo, and even 3 voice SIDs in "simulated" stereo!

  109.  When you dont have the second sid you really dont know what you are
  110.  missing.  I was floored when I played most of my new sids and discovered
  111.  how awesome they sounded in stereo.
  112.  The classic music stuff seems to be especially good and a tad above the
  113.  rest (as a group).
  114.  I think youare really missing more than 1/2 by not having it.  My favorite
  115.  thingis to load up a 1581 and play it while falling asleep.

  128. I don't know about SID files, but I think there is a Music Shop program that
  129. does output in music notation, tho you may have to use an editor to build the
  130. piece.  This prog may also be a GEOS utility.  Not too sure.

  169.  There is a wonderful sid treat coming to your local library soon :D
  170.  A customer of mine just sent me 13 FULL disks of stereo sids he has
  171.  done over the years (as in 1980 -> ;).   Barbershop style and Jazz 
  172.  (berlin etc.).  A really unique collection.  He wants them only
  173.  distributed as "whole" disks. So, I will either ARC them into one
  174.  file or I will probably just SFX them into 2 smaller files depending
  175.  on how well they compress.

  196. If you would like to hear classical music as done by a true master of SID
  197. music, be sure to download File # 8932, Sellingers.slr and File # 8933, Morley
  198. Almon.slr, both by JABBA!  These stereo files are fine examplesearly classical
  199. music.  Jabba handles sounds wonderfully, never conflicting, always
  200. complementing one another! Don't miss these!!

  230. For those of you who may not know me, my name is Troy Rutter.  I
  231.  have done 100+ SIDs under the name DATASID (some are only in albums).  I am a
  232. QDJ  on Qlink (still..) and also do graphics under LtCmdrData.

  294. I recently uploaded some MIDI extensions to Sidplayer to the Dr. Evil library.
  295. These extensions are in the form of documentation on how to use the Sidplayer
  296. editor (or Stereo Editor) to create tunes for playback on a MIDI synthesizer,
  297. plus some player programs.  There are four players in all to meet a variety of
  298. needs.

  355.   SID Classes will be held on Wednsdays, starting Sep 25, 1991.  They will be
  356. held in the !SID! RTC in Room 6, at 9:30 Eastern time.  The classes will last
  357. for about an hour.  There will be 4 classes, forming a basic introduction to 
  358. the use of the SID Editor to create SID music files.  Everyone is welcome to 
  359. attend from folks who have never tried to SID to those accomplished SID      
  360. artists, who might wish to lend a hand to the others.
  361.   If you wish to attend you need to do three things: 
  362.    1. You need to have a copy of "COMPUTE!'s Music 
  363.       System for the Commodore 128 & 64" book and disk.
  364.    2. You also need to have a copy of "Stereo.ARC", file #8027.  You can
  365.       download that here in the Flagship.  Even if you don't wish to do Stereo
  366.       SIDs, the features of this program make it advantageous to use.
  367.    3. Finally, just so I can plan better, if you expect to attend the  
  368.       classes, please add a posting here, or drop me EMAIL (WHOLE.NOTE)
  369.   Although the classes will be covering a host of hints and tricks for using
  370. the Editor to create SIDs, it cannot, and won't even try to, substitute for
  371. the book mentioned above.  The book is more than just program docs, it is an
  372. excellent introduction to music theory, and filled with useful tables, charts,
  373. and supplemental programs.
  374.   If you have heard SIDs and wanted to make your own.. this is a chance to get
  375. a helping hand to get started.  If you start making SID music, you will very
  376. likely find it quite habit-forming... and a lot of FUN!!

  400. "technical" than "musical" however since it describes the use of a rather
  401. sophisticated, albeit user-friendly, music program. :)  (We often call it

  424. I recently DL a GIF file from the Macintish area and tried to convert to GEOS.
  425. I first used GEOGIF and it said that it was not a GIF file. I then used
  426. MACATTACK and it worked but the scan was all just lines of noise like. Is it
  427. possible to DL from the Mac area and convert to GEOS? I hope I explained
  428. enough to get an answer. Thanks, Jerry.

  434.  Ahh, the infamous Mac header.  Some Macintosh GIFs attach a small header
  435.  to the start of the file just because, well, the Macintosh system feels
  436.  like it. :)

  439.  it was hit-and-miss.  Perhaps someone here can offer a program that will
  440.  do this automatically?

  450. If the header is a standard length ( I think it is used to import into
  451. macpaint but i'm not sure), it would be easy to use a pc to hack it off... cbm
  452. dos makes it a pain to do that though :)

  458. The MACBinary header is always 128 bytes.  It would be real easy to write a
  459. BASIC program to kill off the 128 bytes.  In fact, its sooo easy, I can do it
  460. here!

  522.  Yes, download "Autograph".  It will view just about anything in C64 mode
  523.  and is very good!  Also converts some files.

  538.  One thing super about Autograph is it works very well from the CMD products
  539.  and the file conversion is nice if you want to uncompress the files to port

  549.   I've seen several conversion pgms that will convert TO geopaint, but have
  550. not come up with one that will go in the other direction....ie, FROM GEOS to
  551. KOALA, DOODLE, whatever....does such  an animal exist?

  558. I am pretty sure it does.... and incidentally... that would be a very easy
  559. conversion to do.   Koala and Doodle! (IMO) would be much easier to create

  566.  I believe Joe Buckley's program PaintView II will do what you want.  It
  567.  lets you scroll around a geoPaint file (in GEOS), and when you press S,
  568.  it'll save whatever is on the screen in Doodle! format.

  606.  Hi guys!  There is another program for converting Geopaint pix to 
  607.  different formats. I believe a version of it is here on GEnie.
  608.  It's called PICSHOW. I'm not sure if it's the latest version, 
  609.  but I DO have the latest. It's PICSHOW 3.4.  I'll U/L it if it 
  610.  isn't the one already here. It converts between Geopaint, JJ,
  611.  GG,Doodle,Artshow, Koala, Runpaint, Advanced art studio, Artist 64, Blazing
  612. Paddles , and B/W HI-RES. Maybe more,I don't know.  It's a nice program. 
  613.  I would recommend it highly, and it runs FAST too!

  671. Today I got an SIDsymphony cartridge, the one that adds an extra SID chip to
  672. the computer, for 6-voice stereo sound.

  674. The problem is that the Stereoplayer will play ONLY in 3 voices.  I cannot 
  675. call up the "parameters" menu, which you are supposed to be able to do by
  676. pressing "space".

  678. Well, I thought I might have a bad copy of the program, which I had originally
  679. downloaded months ago, so I downloaded it again tonight.

  681. Still, no luck with the new copy.  I press "space" to call up the parameters
  682. menu and NOTHING happens.

  692.  After SIDplayer 10.3 loads and finds the songs on the disk you will be
  693.  presented with a menu.  On the left will be the songs, on the right the
  694.  options for playing the songs.

  698.  key and the second hidden menu will be displayed on the right hand side of
  699.  the screen. Now hit the
  700.  M
  701.  key to change your "mode" from normal to stereo.  I forget which address
  702.  comes first ($d400?) but I believe you want the second one.  If you don't
  703.  get stereo sound just go back and change the address.
  704.  Now hit the

  706.  key if you want to disable the fastloaders.  On a Ramlink or CMD HD this is
  707.  the option you should pick.  Now hit the
  708.  C=
  709.  key again to get back to the first menu.  If the stereo song plays and sounds
  710.  okay then it is time to save your configuration to disk by hitting the
  711.  backspace key <-

  833. Getting back to the original topic, yes JBEE, I did ask Mark about it. He said
  834. that he had written a new version of "Empire Strikes Back" to go with
  835. Stereoplayer 10.3, and offered that, plus a whole bunch of other SIDs if I
  836. sent him a disk.  I sent him the disk and a shareware donation back in April
  837. of last year.  He cashed the check, but I haven't heard *anything* from him
  838. since.  This correspondence with him was on the C= Fido Echo, and in U.S.
  839. snail mail.

  863. I aked Mark A D a lot on Q-link when a new player would be out last one was
  864. 10.3 He said he was rewiting the program from start because that would be
  865. easyer then trying to modify stereo player 10.3. The last I herd over a year
  866. ago is that if he wanted to he could relees the new vershion but he still was
  867. not satifyed with it. It would do Digiteysed sounds with 5 other SID voices
  868. was the best thing I remember but he was still working on getting it so the
  869. dig. sounds would be at a good speed wile playing other SID sounds and it
  870. would do MIDI too. It sound to me that all he had to do was put the finnishing
  871. tuchis on it but never did. I hope you can read this because I can't speel
  872. good and that's why I don't comment much.

  898.  swap 8 function.. I have not tried it, as I have it on disk and dont
  899.  use it enough to justify tying up my rl space (G).  Give it a try

  907. Yes it works in RAMlink. Do do the Swop 8 and it will work. I just uploaded a
  908. vershion of stereo player 10.3 that auto finds your 2nd SID chip even if it is
  909. addressed at $d700 not just $de00 and $df00. It will all so now go from device
  910. 8 to 29. You can save your configure out with the back arrow and it will save
  911. that device #. So what ever your RAMlink is set the device # in stereo player
  912. to that and save it and you will not have to do the swop 8. If you have your
  913. RAMlink past device 11 you will need to down load the arced stereo player I
  914. uploaded.

  927. I did do the swap 8 originally and all I would get is a blank screen.   So I
  928. went back to my disk version, loaded it and disabled the fastload and then I
  929. saved the configure.  Copied it to my R/L and still no go.  I'll try the new

  936. Well, I d/l the new version and now I can't copy it between partitions on my
  937. ramlink.  I d/l it to my 1581 emu and tried to fcopy it to my 1571 emu. but iI
  938. get a 71, directory error, 36,21.  Looked this up and saw it was a problem
  939. with  the BAM which could be corrected by validating that particular
  940. partition.  It didn't work. Okay, now what?!:)
