- I would very much doubt that the Hitchhiker's Guide will be uploaded - it
- would all have to be typed in. CMD does have copies of this available for
- sale, though. I have no idea what the price is, but I don't expect it's cheap,
- considering the size.

- Uh, I at one time downloaded the HitchHiker's Guide in electronic form. I have
- no idea where the original files are but I know that they do exist
- (somewhere... actually I may know where...).
-
- I'll check tonight and upload it if I find it. But they do exist in electronic

- That's not the guide that is being referred to Craig. The Hitchhiker's Guide
- to GEOS was released by GeoWorks in it's unfinished form, but nearly complete.
- This was supposed to have been the sequel to the Official GEOS Programmer's
- Reference Manual. For any serious GEOS programming, both of these should be
- had. There is material in one that is not contained in the other. The manual
- you are thinking of I think originally appeared on QLink and was known as the
- GEOS Technical Manual. This was created before Berkeley released their own. It
- was originally in a sequential text format and later someone converted it
- into a GeoWrite format. I think it is still on QLink. I haven't looked to see
- if it is on here.

- He was probably thinking about the bits and pieces of the geoprogrammer 2.0
- Beta info that is in the sfx to the geoprogrammer upgrade pkg.. That wasn't
- the guide itself, just a small piece of it. It was on Q, but is also here,
- just not what they were looking for. It was previously being sent to you Free
- by GeoWorks if you requested it, but not anymore.

- understand a little more about the workings of GeoProgrammer. Thanks for the

- I know which guide you're talking about - R.Knop had it on his FTP site
- (before it got xferred to ccnga.uwaterloo.edu under pub/cbm/geos)... I've
- tried for the last day and a half to get over there and get it but the link to
- the outside world is down at my site and prob. won't be back up until someone
- comes in after the weekend.
-
- The other document you were referring to (Geos Tech Manual) I think is also

- Robert,
-
- You can probably get them by using a fileserver.
-
- Or, more easilly, by asking a Sysop of the INET RT to get it for you. I seem
- to recall seeing their postings that they would be doing this for anyone who
- requested.

- Actually I'll be uploading them to the library later tonight. I checked at the
- FTP site (ccnga.uwaterloo.edu under pub/cbm/os/geos/PROGRAMMING) and found a
- file called: hitchhiker.arc or something similair that was approximately 60k
- arc'd.
-
- I'm not sure if this was the one that was mentioned as being released w/
- GeoProgrammer V2.0 on diskette but regardless, I don't believe it's in the
- library currently and I'll be uploading it.
-
- (As a side note not related to this - I'll also be uploading ACE version 9 -
- but that's another topic area...)
-
- As far as downloading or getting files from FTP sites through the InterNet - I
- need to look into this - I'm blessed with an InterNet account through school
- but I do know there are some sites where you mail them with the site name and
- file and they will automatically grab it for you, uuencode it and send it via
- regular e-mail. Uuencoding is a process whereby binary (executable) files can
- be transferred to text and safely sent through regular e-mail. Running a
- program that "uudecodes" this text (such as ACE or UUXFER) will transform the
- mail back into an executable program.
-
- Someone has already asked me concerning this and I'll send you email regarding
- the correct way to go about this and also update my INETGDV1.DOC that I
- recently uploaded here (an InterNet guide focusing on C= computers...)

- Robert,
-
- I too have FTP access, so have not done much directly with any of the
- several available mail servers. (As an aside, when I perused the Internet
- RoundTable here it seemed pretty apparant that the RT is relying on a
- server to gather INet files for users on GEnie. Not 100% certain since
- the user on GEnie is shielded from much of the system's innards by a user
- friendly menu system, which considering all things is a nifty way of doing
- things.)
-
- As far as speedy access to files, and ease, nothing can beat direct
- downloads from Genie's Libraries. Especially y-modem batch of multiple
- files.
-
- However, if you are still interested in experimenting with the servers
- which Craig referred to, try sending an email over INet as follows:
-
- to: rjc@math.princeton.edu@INET#
- Subject: Command <---type it exactly, capital 'C', rest small case
-
- In the body of the email insert:
-
- send help
- send starter.kit
- send faq.csip
- end
-
- Do _NOT_ add anything after the word 'end'. No signature, nothing!!!
-
- As the message states, this will give you plenty of info, provided that
- this server is still operating...... :/

- Here's a little bit of what is on the first page of the Hitchhiker's
- Guide:

- The Hitchhiker's Guide to GEOS

- a distribution fee for the physical act of transferring a copy.
- Please distribute copies of this work as widely as possible.

- Actually, it's a bit stickier than that now, Maurice - distribution rights to
- the Hitchhikers Guide To GEOS is now in our hands. And while I haven't been
- instructed to inform anyone NOT to pass it around, I do know that page you're
- quoting from has now been replaced by on without such a statement. I believe
- this is partly for legal reasons, since we have the distribution rights, but
- do not have the right to assign such rights to anyone else.

- Oh, sorry about that Doug. However, the biggest problem is in trying to make
- copies of that big document while keeping the cost within reason. Since CMD
- has the distribution rights to the Hitchhiker's Guide, why not try to obtain
- the rights to the Programmer's Ref Manual (the original) also? A GEOS
- programmer really needs both in order to be productive.

- We've persued that, Maurice. The 'rights' to it are currently in a grey zone.
- Bantam had the rights, but they claim that they sold rights to ALL of their
- computer-related books to another publishing firm several months ago. The
- other publishing firm has no record of obtaining the rights to this specific
- title, though they admitted they may have them but it simply doesn't show up
- in their records because it isn't a title they intend to reprint. Meanwhile,
- the actual copyright would appear to belong to Berkeley Softworks, now known
- as Geoworks. They, however, have no record of this either, and appear to be
- unaware that they even wrote the book (at least our contact there isn't aware
- of it). It all boils down to trying to get distribution rights, when nobody
- wants to claim ownership...

- Not to mention once HP and Novell aquire their equity shares in Geoworks,
- it might be next to impossible to cut the red tape to convince them to
- let the rights go on another product.
-
- If it is not done soon, it probably never will be.

- Gee Guys I don't think that the Hitchickers was EVER "published" I know the
- copy that I got was just zeroxed off by BSW. I sent $25 to a Regina with a
- note and got this box of 8x10 pre-punched sheets. I just looked for the "fly
- sheet", but it is trashed and missing. It seems to me that there was a note
- on it to the effect that one could copy and distribute but ONLY for the cost
- of the copies and postage. Perhaps some one who has a less abused copy could
- verify this. Just went back and read Maurice's note to that effect and Dougs
- responce that the page now hasn't that note on it. But as ours did, Doug,
- would that mean that we Could make copies? BSW hasn't contacted me other
- wise, anymore than they have sent a card saying you now are the company to
- contact for product and help. If that is the case then it would seem that BSW
- has already given up most of the rights to it. Hitchicker is totaly different
- than the Programer Book that was published. It has "confidential" stamps on
- pages that deal with Desktop and Paint information. There are footnotes
- handwritten in as how things don't work the way the printing says it will.
- Then there are huge areas that make reference to appendixes that aren't there.
- While other spots are blank in text, with the information penciled in. Plus
- some pages having the wrong title at the top. Even so it is a grand bit of
- GEos programing information. With the programer ref. out of print it is all
- that is left. For those who want to know more of the inside of Geos the "OLD"
- Geostechman.arc by A. Boyce, while dated will give one a look into the
- workings of Geos. These would be files 2896, 2895, 2894 in our lib# 35.
- Perhaps the answer is to "update" the techman via hitchiker to be correct in
- terms (for that is the area it is off) and information on what is destroyed by
- the various jumps. Would be a place to start.

- Barnes and Noble remaindered the unsold stock from Bantam. As recently as a

- The information that I used to order my copy is:

- Nope, I'm afraid not. Geoworks has pretty much disowned the Apple version, and
- I doubt you'll find anyone there who really knows much about it now. If
- there's an active company in the Apple market, Geoworks would probably be game
- to license distribution, as they did with us and the Commodore versions. But I
- wouldn't expect ANY technical info from them; we didn't even get so much as a
