- I have been reading old copies of GEOWORLD tonight and really miss it. I came
- too late really. My subscription contained ten issues, basically all the
- supplier had left in stock. I would like to get more of the issues as well
- as talk to people who still like the magazine. Are any of the contributors
- online here? Susan Puhn-Lamb, Peter T. Hughes, Conrad Tillman, Joe Bockley,
- Randy Winchester, or any of the other fine writers? There were a lot of great
- articles and stuff specifically GEOS to be found between the covers. I wonder
- how much ofproducts offered are still available from the creators? So,
- hopefully, here is an entrance ramp onto the information highway! :)

- One of the things I've been doing in my RTC is rounding up some of these
- folks as guest speakers, and have a conference on Tuesday nights. Jim
- Butterfield, my last guest, is an example. Of course, I am also bringing in
- some new names on the scene such as Brian Crosthwaite, the editor of dieHard
- magazine. He will be in on May 31st. from 10 to 11:30 pm EST.
- Keep looking at Topic 50 in this category for upcoming guest speakers. I
- think you'll be pleased. In fact, one of the people you mentioned has
- expressed interest in coming in as guest speaker, but for the sake of
- dramatics, and that it is not confirmed I'll have to keep you in suspense.

-
- to CMD-Doug: Has CMD considered purchasing the rights to the Geoworld disks?

- It was quite a few pages as I recall (the directory); maybe 20 or so. I'll
- have to locate it and check copyright info before committing to making a copy
- for anyone. I haven't talked to Peter or Paul for well over two years; I don't
- believe I have their phone number in any of my current records. It's been
- about the same amount of time since I spoke with Susan as well... folks were
- having a lot of trouble getting anything from her at that point; so I suspect
- her interests were elsewhere. Peter and Paul appeared to pretty much drop out
- of things after a death in the family, as I recall. I believe that was part of

- I believe their father died. Susan, Peter, and Paul were all very much
- envolved with much of Geoworld at that time. One of their main advertisers

- take the soul out of a project in no time.
-
- Do you have any of the disks? I was wondering how they compare to the

-
- I'll write to the address furnished in Geoworld for Sosan and Peter and see

- Here is a way to get a nice Directory
- set up for Geos. You need to DL
- Combiner by Nick Vrtis #13841
- and
- GEOLIST by John F. Howard #6672
- (there is a #13781 for 80clm ONLY that
- some of you might want to try.)
- You use the Geolist to put your
- various Geos disks directory to Disk.
- As with all Geos programs the more you
- can put into REU the better so Geolist
- lets you pick which drive you want it
- to list to. The program will let you
- either make a Disk File or send it to
- the printer. You get besides the
- files names the notes from the info
- box.
- Then use Combiner to make them into One
- big GeoWrite file. You can then use
- GeoWrite's search to find where on
- your disks things are. You might want
- to copy the disks name to the top to
- each of its pages. Geolist will only
- put it at the start of the file it
- makes. Then you can use the Header or
- Footer to put the date you did this to
- keep track of any updates. Dumping
- some files. Just use search to delete
- them. Adding stuff combine it into
- the file. As you can get upto 66
- pages of stuff you have lots of room.
- Try it I think you'll like it.

- The only 2 drawbacks I have found with DirMaster is that (1) you must
- validate the disk when you are finished because sometimes the BAM may be
- damaged and (2) if you have geoSHELL, DirMaster will not read the external
- shell commands on the disk if you select the "view types" menu. As soon as it
- reads the filetype of a geoSHELL command, it crashes the system. I have found
- that the best directory sorter is MoveNSort by Dave Ferguson. It isn't as
- flashy as DirMaster but it works much better and you don't have to validate
- the disk after you use it.
- I believe that CMD has the rights to Dave's programs now, so they would be

- So this raises a Question of who owns what. I purchased a disk from Kent
- long
- before he "retired" from the Commodore world. With it I "got the rights to
- the source code" to many of his programs. Including the source code for the
- final and revised Directory program.
- By that I mean I can include his code into any program that I write. That
- was
- the deal made upon buying the disk.
- So as I "own" large chunks of this code it would seem to me that I could come
- up with "new" programs that worked sorta the same way and post them and they
- would have to be made live as they are Mine not Kents or Parecs.
- I raise this only to start programers to think about what they want the final

- they get has "total" rights.

- My contract with Kent stated he was the sole owner of all his programs

- GEOS 64 occasionally but not as much as I used to. Jim, it would definite- ly
- be interesting if you tried my configuration. Please if you can, try it and
- let me know what happens.
- From what I understand when Nate released GeoCanvas, there were supposed to
- be different variations depending on the type of equipment one had. Maybe I
- got a version that work with a RAMLink or something.
- Thanks for the help everyone!! When I finish playing with geoShell I will
- get back to you on what happened.

- Well I sat down and reconfigured my BBG RAM as 2-RAM 1581's. GeoCanvas seems
- to work fine with no corruption of files under this configuration. I would
- still prefer to have it set up as 5-RAM 1571's so I can easily switch between
- GEOS 64 and 128 with a minimal loss of files.

- Does geoCanvas 128 fully replace geoPaint 128?

- Are graphics backwards compatible?

- Graphics are compatible either way. geoCanvas does not "fully" replace gp 128
- or 64 for that matter. GeoCanvas does not have the text scrap handling
- capability that gp has. I do not know if this was intentional or not, you may
- not need it. But I like to import text scraps into my paint documents at
- times. Except for that, gc can fully replace gp! :) Tom

- I don't have GeoCanvas and have never seen it in person, but I might be
- able to provide a little insight here as to what is happening with the
- BBG rams and it might also pertain to other applications that operate
- in a similar manner and also on other devices other than the BBG.
- I do know that GeoCanvas needs 64K of memory from you ram device to work
- with. So, it looks in the kernal at some pointers and finds your ramdisk
- and the location in the REU, or in this case the BBG, where it begins.
- GEOS itself, always uses the first 64K. A RAM1571 normally begins at the
- second 64K and requires 6 of these 64K blocks to operate in. The 6th block
- actually is not completely used. This leaves the 8th 64K block free.
- GeoCanvas looks for a free block and tries to determine what is being used.
- The problem you have here is that when you are using partitions B, C, D, or
- E on the BBG ram, this pointer is pointing at a location higher up in the
- BBG. So GeoCanvas thinks that some of these lower 64K blocks are not being
- used. So, what does it do? It makes use of the second block. Well, the
- 1571 drivers begin saving data to track 1 and work their way on up. This
- means that when partition A is being used, the first 64K block gets filled
- first. So, the first few files that are saved to this partition will
- inevitably get trashed. If a RAM1581 is getting used, it starts saving its
- files closer to the middle of the area. So, the first 64K block won't get
- used until you get the partition nearly full. This explains why a RAM1581
- might not seem to be bothered.
- One trick you could pull here with the RAM1571s is to copy some dead weight
- into the partition first, after beginning with a completely empty
- partition. Be sure to copy about 64K worth of files or more. True, you will
- lose some space, but you are going to lose some stuff anyway. You will
- not be able to run GeoCanvas from partition A due to this. It will look
- above the first 8 64K blocks and might do something you won't want done.
- Another cure and until a patch is written to do this for you, geoSHELL users
- can fix the problem right now. All that has to be done is to move all
- 5 partitions up by one 64K block. This way, nothing is using the second
- block and GeoCanvas will always have this for itself. One of the members
- of my local user group has a BBG ram. I will test the method I have in
- mind and then post the info here for you after I know that it works. It
- would basically involve using the 'mem' command to move the pointers in
- memory, reformat the partition and then save it in the form of a geoSHELL
- command using the 'learn' command. You would do this with each partition.
- Then you would rename each of these new commands with a name that stands
- for the partition it goes with such as parta, partb, partc, etc. Then you
- use geoSHELL to change partitions instead of the utility that came with
- the BBG since it would put these ram pointers back to the original
- locations.

- You can use geoCanvas on a Ramlink, but....you need to have a big enough DACC
- partition. That size is dependent on whether you have the first version or
- the second version of geoCanvas. The second version 1.02 I think, needed a
- larger DACC. I don't know off hand what it is right now, but mine is 1024
- blocks. :) -Tim

- Increase your DACC. Go to 2048 and Gateway, Switcher and geoCanvas can
