- Sub: prg file #9657: IBM HD DRV w/ c64-128?
-
- A program in library gives me the impression that IBM compatible HARD DRIV ES
- can be accessed with C64/128's. Could it BE? It seems to want a DRV # and
- then tries to access one. Any docs or info out there anyone????

- That program is in Creative Micro Designs "public" library and is a tool
- meant to be used with CMD's own Hard Drives.
- It will seek out other SCSI HDs hooked up to the CMD Hard Drives and provide
- their ID numbers.
-
- It is only useful if you own a CMD HD and you have connected other external
- SCSI Ds up to the CMD HD.

- BBR 128 will use the REU for fast copying (most other programs don't).
- BBR 128 will copy whole disks at once.
- BBR 128 has no file length limit, most terms are 64k or the CP/M stuff has
- a 44k limit when copying from one type of disk to another.
- BBR 128 will easily copy between CBM, MS-DOS, or CP/M formatted 5.25
- (140K-360k) and 3.25 (720K) disks without any hassles in one swoop.
-
- Plus perform automatic conversions and filename prompts.
-
- BBR 128 runs in native mode vs. Format Executive's CP/M mode.
-
- BBR 128 is very expensive!
- You really have a need for it. Like I did, I had ten MS-DOS disks stuffed
- with GIFs and to use anything other than BBR128 to transfer some files
- 300K or bigger would have been a real hassle.

- Mike,
-
- Adding to JBEE's already long list, include:
-
- Reading CMD's HD and RAMLink's Real Time Clock at boot, and automatically
- display the correct time and date in its menu screen. More important, it
- will time/date stamp files as it writes them over to a ms/dos formatted
- disk.
-
- And...
-
- It will properly format that ms/dos disk in case an already formatted
- one isn't handy. Trust me on this! I just recently did this for a
- club member with a 386 LapTop and the CP/M program and its related data
- files ran superbly.
-
- Huh?
-
- A 128 formatting and writing to an ms/dos disk so a 386 can run CP/M?
-
- Yup! The 386 was running 22NICE, using the ms/dos disk formatted on
- my 128, along with the CP/M program and data BBR wrote to that disk.
-
- Seems 22NICE on the 386 choked when it came to running SuperCalc2.
- Since the version of SC2 that I use on the 128 is as close to generic
- as can be, we figured to give it a try. And, it ran exactly as it does
- on my 128, accessing the spreadsheets BBR also wrote to the disk.
-
- Nothing mysterious about this... The 386 will only read ms/dos
- formatted disks. However, the program 22NICE will let the 386 take
- CP/M programs from the ms/dos disk and then run them.
-
- BBR made the entire process possible, and simple. :)

- Almost all these replies about BBR128 apply to BBR64 too!
- As long as you own a C-1571 or C-1581 you will be all set!
-
- Sorry about the C-128 slant. C-64 owners greatly outnumber C-128 owners.
- It is just that most of the active BB users happen to own C-128s.
- Feel free ANY time to post C64 questions or topics. One of the main reasons
- for owning a C-128 is because it is 100% C-64 compatible.

- You have to have a 1571 or 1581 disk drive to read or write to the original
- IBM formatted disks.
-
- If you already have the IBM disks and just need someone to transfer the
- data leave me email and we can work out something.
-
- If you are going to be doing it on a regular basis your best bet is to
- buy a 1581 from Software Hut and BBR64 and you will have an excellent
- system for transfering IBM disks to your C-64.

- The C-1581s sell for less than the C-1571 now. Since he already owns a
- Ramlink and will probably be transfering large files the C-1581 makes
- good sense.
-
- Note:if you have anyway to hook up your C-64 to the IBM this is the best
- and cheapest way to go. You can also make your own cable (see library #1
- for more details).
- Also, if both machines have fast modems (2400 baud or faster) and the calls
- are local you could transfer files this way.

- I transfer files like this:
-
- 1. Boot up a BBS or Host on the IBM.
-
- 2. On the commodore, load desterm. Enter "ATDT xxx xxxx" ( xxx = my phone
- number).
-
- 3. When the busy signal appears, hold for 3 seconds and hit enter to hang up
- the line.
-
- 4. When the modem says RING, the bbs will answer. On DESTERM, enter the
- command
-
- ATXD
- in terminal mode. This will connect the systems together. I can then logon to
- the IBM bbs...

- Actually, this program doesn't have any documentation as it is a simplier
- program than most of them. The trick is to "add" people to the index

- Mark: I stumbled onto that printer driver error earlier than your post (see

- I'm pretty sure I wouldn't spend $30 on it.

- A few things I figured out about ROOTS V2.0; first off, when you run it
- don't bother creating a data disk. You'll save yourself grief later on.
- The program will crash if the ROOTS program files are not found on disk
- so use your program disk as the data disk too.
-
- Always, exit the program when you are done by selecting item #12 from
- the main menu. An index type file of whats on disk will be written to
- the data disk and MUST be there when you re-load&run ROOTS next time.
- If it's not, ROOTS can't find what is on disk.
-
- To enter data:
- Select #7 (Name Index) from the main menu. A list of names will come up
- which will be empty the first time. Enter the number of an empty slot
- and you'll be back at the main menu. Now select #5 (Add Name...) from the
- main menu. Enter all the info the program asks for about the individual.
- Just press return if you don't have anything to enter at a particular time.
- When all the info is entered you'll be taken back to the main menu. To
- enter another name select #7 from the main menu again and pick a empty
- slot again. Again, back to the main menu; select #5 and enter the info about
- the new individual. Follow the same pattern for each name to be entered:
-
- #7 main menu, pick empty slot, #5 main menu, enter info, back to #7 main
- menu.
-
- Names are stored on disk as charts which are groups of individuals but I
- have no idea how MANY individuals can be in a chart. There is one of two
- ways to save a group(chart) to disk. One is to select #8 from the main menu
- and pick and empty slot. The chart of individuals currently in memory will
- be saved to disk and the empty slot will now be in memory for you to work on.
- This is also how you can move from chart to chart, by selecting not an empty
- chart but by selecting a listed (on disk) chart. Let me WARN you, I had
- this fail once when I wanted to have the current chart in memory saved to
- disk and I selected a listed chart. Don't know why but the chart in memory
- was only erased and the new one loaded. Old one with my changes was not
- saved to disk first.
- The other way your chart in memory is saved to disk is when you exit by
- selecting #12 from the main menu. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU SHOULD EXIT!!
-
- The reason I suggest you use the program disk as the data disk too, is
- because if you are going to send anything to the printer you are not
- warned or prompted to insert the program disk at all. More than likely
- you'll have the separate data disk (if that's how you do it) in the drive
- instead; ROOTS will crash if the printer file is not found. All the unsaved
- changes you made will be lost!
-
- Of the printers supported, I don't have any. So I chose printer file#2 for
- "other 132 col printers". No, mine isn't 132 col only 80 but I set the pitch
- swicth to compressed. Mine is a Panasonic1091i with Xetec SG interface set
- to Super Graphics mode. When asked for the printer codes I just pressed
- return and used the default settings. Printouts were surprisingly good!
-
- I think I have enough here for you to get started. If not, just holler ;)

- You DEFINITELY do nice work Mark. I found out a lot of that but did not
- express it any way nearly as clearly! And I never figured out the need for
- exiting to save the data... like I said before, as a programmer, I have no use
- for some programs. That lack of prompt thing drove me MAD! And when I get a
- FORMAT DISK screen that seems to offer no alternative, I tend to be kind of
- linear in my thinking (and come up wit the disk). I too ran the wide print,
- but again without your foresight. I *do* have a wide carriage printer but
- didn't have wide paper in at the time. The printout looked as though it might
- be nice, but it was hard to tell. VERY nice piece of work tho! (Your getting
- an answer to this, not the guy who wrote it). And don't you hate mis-
- spellings in programs.
