- D & D Services, Inc. (DADS.INC) has just announced that it has sold all
- production rights for BellTerm 64 to Juliani Communications of Norristown, PA.
-
- BellTerm 64 is a Terminal Program for the Commodore 64 that uses 'overlays'
- for its many different features such as 80 column mode, Y- Modem batch
- downloading, and Auto-Un-Arcing while downloading programs to disk.
-
- The new producer has plans for completing an ANSII screen overlay for existing
- BellTerm versions and a new sub-menu structure to simplify usage in later
- versions.
-
- BellTerm 64 is one of the few Commodore 64 Terminal Programs that will operate
- with the SwiftLink-232 at speeds up to 19.2K CPS.
-
- BellTerm 64 is distributed and supported by Parsec Inc, of Salem MA.

- Don't throw out that old keyboard! It may be thoroughly repairable. A couple
- of months ago, my a key died... got weaker and weaker, to the point where I
- couldn't get an a on my 128's screen at all. Well, I did some asking around,
- and it turned out that all I needed to do was take the 128 apart and clean the
- keyboard's contact board. An eraser will work, but you are probably better
- off doing it with some electronics cleaner. After doing this, my keyboard
- worked fine!

- Hi Rob,
-
- I plan to keep the old keyboard around.
-
- Actually it works fine. Just a sense of getting on the spongy side from
- all the use. By far the biggest activity on the 128 has been WP, and I quess
- after 5 years of pounding, the springs have lost some of their bounce.
-
- Because nothing really went bad, it wasn't the sort of thing that I noticed
- immediately. Instead, just sort of slowly got this sense of the keys
- starting to get 'tired'.
-
- Since the keyboard has all the moving parts, it seems resonable that it might
- begin to show some wear and tear after 5 years...

- IPaint, the excellent 80-column paint program, is no longer being distributed
- by Voyager Mindtools according to Rick Kane, the author. He advises that you
- SHOULD NOT send any money to VMI in an attempt to buy this product.
-
- He will continue to support this product through sales and customer service

- SUBJ: C128 based lab wins award FROM: CRL 10/20/91
-
- NCRPTL (a national technology in education group) just announced the 101 best
- uses of technology in education. Psychology Laboratory, based on the C128, was
- one of the winners. The secret of success was BASIC 7.0. NO other computer
- puts so much application development power in the hands of a non programmer
- (from this narrow point of view the Mac and PC are impossible, and the Amiga
- is a nice game machine). A problem in my field (Psychology) is that to
- develop a new application one must usually choose between being a professional
- or being a programmer. On the C128 programming is so easy one can do both.
- Anyway, I thought you all would like to know that there is bite in the old dog
- yet. We have had 20+ C128s supporting our program at Northern Michigan Univ.
- since 1987. I don't see any reason to change until something actually
- superior comes along. Commodores empower people 8-)

- Hooray! 3 cheers for the 128! It's good to see that there are pockets of
- people around who recognize that you don't need a 50 MHz 486 to do most things
- people want to do with a computer.
-
- Now, consider: for the cost of the 20+ 128's, how many Macs would you get???
-
- I tried to program a Mac once, in C. Boy, was that painful! I eventually
- managed to get the program running, but kept running into weird problems when
- I just wanted to get console input from the user ("input a$" kinds of stuff).
- I find the Amiga more programmer-friendly. Haven't tried a PC. But, as the
- article says, nothing is as easy as sitting down and writing and running a
- program in Basic 7.0!

- Too bad, yes and no. I loved INFO for its honesty in the early days, but they
- got unbearbly pompous after awhile. Granted, they were one of the best C= mags

- Info was good reading in the days of 8-bit coverage. I dropped them when they
- 'dropped us' but leafed thru it when I saw it on the newstand once in a while.
- I was never convinced that they were all that square with 8-bit readers for

- The main theme of the past issues was "who would want to own a 8 bit
- computer".
- The current issue might have been who would want to own stock in a Amiga
- magazine.
- Oh, I suppose we will always remember those good issues, like the ultimate
- Amiga system for only $10,000+ . Yea, that's a *real* home computing
- platform, NOT!
- Because I was unfortunate to renew my subscription just as they decided to
- drop Commodore coverage I wrote to them and pointed out besides owing me
- a refund that all I thought they would be now is a bunch of turncoats and
- another Amiga rag.
- Like every other good Commodore magazine that went Amiga they went under.
- - no loss -
- My only question is what kind of caliber men are they really?
-
- Since they use to brag about the days of their C-64 and 9 pin printer
- issues are they going to do the honorable thing and make sure they refund
- everyone's money?
-
- Or will everyone remember them like this, Info turns their back on their
- original customers, Info refuses to refund issues remaining on current
- subscriptions to people that could care less about the all Amiga
- magazine, Info goes out of business, Info stiffs all current subscribers.
-
- Hey, it is not my picture on the inside cover ...
-
- But that is what I think of them and how I will remember their smiling
- faces - I suppose a run for Congress would be in order now.

- In this case what you hope for and what you get are two different things!

- P.O.Box 7062

-
- Twin Cities 128
- Well, I have now receieved issue#29 and it is a very interesting
- issue. A bit on the small side (20 pages) but that is twenty pages of text,
- source, and pictures without any ads.
- All in all a very good issue and I think for content it rates amoung
- the best yet! I am taking it to the printers tomorrow. I was hoping to
- do three colors but I think that will have to wait until issue #31. Loren
- will be producing #30 and that should be done in 4 weeks or so. Money
- permitting we will publish #30 right away to get "caught up" and so
- there will be good reading material for the summer. The hardware projects
- will be enough to keep anyone busy :)
- Expect to see the issue arriving in 4 weeks or so (1 week at the printers
- and 3 weeks or so for the bulk mailing). After that it will be arriving at

- Well, as long as Gary is speaking of magazines.... There is one very
- un-slick one that notwithstanding its lack of glossy cover, is just chock
- full of some very useful, timely, and interesting articles.
-
- I'm referring to geoJOURNAL put out by the geoMETRIX GEOS User's Group. Most
- everything happening in GEOS is covered, and things not happening in GEOS,
- but happening in the 64 and 128 worlds are also there. It far exceeds the
- quality of a periodical that you'd expect to see coming from a User Group.
-
- They will send a sample issue for a buck, or you can subscribe to 6 issues
- for $5. It comes out about every two months, or three. I'd suggest going for
- the subscription. And, don't be fooled by the low price. It is put together
- by guys who gotta really like what they're doing, and do it well, for the fun
- of it, and not for profit. So it doesn't cost much, but offers a lot.
-
- [Geeesss.... I'm beginning to sound like a walking, talking commercial. So,
- I'll say right here that my only interest in geoJOURNAL is that of a very
- satisfied subscriber!]
-
- You can write to them at:
-
- geoMETRIX GEOS Users Group
- 20224 S. Sprague Road
- Oregon City, OR 97045-9641

- do carry 1-2 Commodore columns. The rates for RUN and Compute are far too
- much unless you are selling $2000+ If you belonged to a local User Group
- you could try them.
- Around here we have two major magazines available almost anywhere that sell
- used items and they always have a big and healthy used section.
-
- You could also try the Flagship in Cat#10 as there are horsetraders
- and buyers online ;)
-
- If you are a subscriber to TC128 you can place a advertisement free.
- I believe Microbytes also places ads at a fairly cheap rate.
- I know
- The Final Horizon
- 1409 Mill St.
- Laramie, WY 82070
- also accepts ads. I think their rate is $10 1/4 page.

- Yes we do have a low rate, JBEE. Complete "rules" and "regulations" :), rates
- too, are in cat 15 top 3. The quarter page is the cheapest.

- I also noticed on page 159 of Computer Monthly, May 92 (this month) there
- is an ad for a place selling refurbished Commodore equipment.
- The place is called Tech Data Services Inc.

- Just looked over the latest (July/Aug) issue of RUN. Getting thinner and
- thinner! Also getting darn close to half advertisements.
-
- Did learn one thing though I wish I had known earlier. In the Commodore
- Clinic section RUN replies that GEOPublish WILL NOT work under GEOS 128 V2.0!
- Now I find out :( after I purchased a used copy of GEOPublish, sent it in
- to GEOWorks for the upgrade, and made all them posters/signs for my kids!
- How was I to know it wasn't *really* working just fine?!

-
- Ok, ok maybe a little too sarcastic. Do have to give them some credit
- I guess for sticking around where a lot of other mags folded or sold out.
- Was a little disappointed to see GEnie mentioned only once(barely) in the
- PD/shareware article. Whole thing sounded like an ad for Q!
-
- Ah well, at least we have TC64 and TC128!

- Mark,
-
- It seems that RUN goofed not once, but *TWICE* when they reported that
- GEOPublish will not run with GEOS 128.
-
- I cannot imagine how they could possibly make such an horrendous error.
-
- Perhaps RUN's editors should visit the FlagShip and GEnie more often, so
- we all can tell then what is what. :)

- Well, its like saying Paperclip III loads faster off a 15xx drive than
- a HD with a parallel connection.
- Plain common sense would tell you to check that "tip" from a reader before
- publishing it. A call to CMD would have cleared that up.
- It comes down to if you don't use the hardware or software everyday you can't
- expect to edit or write decent articles about it.
-
- Every magazine makes mistakes or publishes incorrect information, matter of
- fact I have to republish the Eprom article (found a way to add FOUR
- battery backed 32k SRAMs/Eproms to a C-128!) in #29.
- There was a technical snafu found out after it was widely tested.
- So, noone is perfect.
-
- I think what people are finding downright annoying is the plain stupid
- mistakes published. It looks more like slinging the hash with trash then
- cooking up a good meal. More than ever people want quality from the
- last remaining Commodore only glossy.
-
- Run can do it and I think they are on the right track by having USERs
- write the articles (I recognised a few good customers names in recent
- issues). But if they are going to stray from that strategy for other
- columns then they should have USERs proof read the issue before
- publishing it.
-
- There is no reason why they can't email someone the articles to proof before
- going to the press.
-
- I think we can all live with typos, misspellings, missing column layouts,
- misnumbering, cheaper paper, and what have you as long as content is there.
- That is what people want.
-
- As it is, RUN is down to 48 pages, at least try to pack the remaining pages
- with excellent information even if the information is of a general/hobby
- interest.
-
- I have said this before and I wish to say it again.
- C128 and C64 owners do not care to read ads about Amigas, PCs, or anything
- else. Use your editorial power to fill the magazine with COMMODORE ADS
- which will benefit the magazine and extents its life.
- I think it is far better to break a small cleric sweat signing up 12
- shareware
- authors for ads to make a complete page of advertising than it is to
- give it away to a sister magazine to advertise a competing computer at
- a cut rate price that doesn't make much money for the magazine.
