- They meant the lifetime of QLink, of course. Probably they will offer to
- 'convert' these to anyone who changes over to AOL - which means abandoning
- your C= machine.
-
- I need to wander by there and start converting my Qpons to + time, now that

- I am convinced they could stay alive by making an Amiga version of the front-

- it die out? While I still avidly use my 64, I do not want to use my old 6480

- I think it would be obvious since July 91 when I quit that they are content
- enough to let Q-link die out. Amiga version of anything would make them
- nada. Even Gazette has dropped their Amiga version insert from what I
- have heard. There are just not enough installed U.S. users. Far more
- C-128 computers were sold than Amigas up to 91 even though they
- had discontinued the C-128/C-128D a long time before.
-
- Until you see someone introduce an amazing new machine with amazing marketing

- JBEE,
-
- I think you have Apple confused with NEXT. NEXT decided to leave the hardware
- market, and go solely software - too bad, as the NEXT was a nice machine.
-
- I don't think Apple is leaving the hardware market. In fact, the new Macintosh
- Tempest and Cyclone models which run on the new Power-PC chips (note that they
- are not the 68000 family anymore... interesting!) are due out soon. If they
- give the Macintosh machines the speed boost people say they can, you might see
- the Mac become a more popular machine.
-
- And Howie, Unix runs on a number of different architectures, including the
- X86, RISC chips, and ahem... the C128. ;)
-
- Anyway, this is getting off topic. Back to our C128-coloured regularily
- scheduled programming.

-
- Speculation in the trade magazines is Apple is positioning itself for

- DOS *WILL* run on a host of machine architectures, just like UNIX. At least
- this will be the case when Windows NT is released. NT runs on the X86 series,
- as well as the RS6000 and a couple of others. And, it will also run DOS
- programs. Of course, some emulation is occurring, but you couldn't argue UNIX
- exactly runs 'natively' either. OS/2 V3.0 is due to have the same "feature"
- when it uses the Mach Kernal as its OS base.
-
- However, this is getting off topic. If we really wanted to help the C64, we
- could all purchase IBM's and C compilers, and write Windows viruses. Nah,
- perhaps thats going too far...
-

- P.S. No kidding the UNIX on the C128 isn't real UNIX. :))

- Forrest,
-
- A very easy way to determine where the prob might be would be to attach the
- 1702 monitor to any VCR, or even the newer Cable TV boxes, the ones that
- output seperate video and audio.
-
- If the monitor works, then the prob is probably with the C64. If it doesn't,
- then the monitor might need fixing. In *that* case most any TV repair shop
- ought to be qualified to do the work.
-
- Please note how I've hedged my bets on this. Another area where the prob
- might be is with faulty or improperly attached cables. This is usually the
- least expensive to fix, and most often overlooked.

- I may be wrong, but I seem to remember from hookups at our user group that
- the 1702 has a switch behind the door (just below the screen) that you
- flip side to side. What you are describing could be caused by that switch

- Is the power light on the C64 comming on? If it is not, you probably have a
- bad power supply. If it is on, I'd check the fuse, then the PLA in that
- order. The PLA decodes all address from the CPU, including the I/O chips. If
- it goes, you'll get a blank screen like you described, and other I/O

- COMMODORE LOSES $177.6 MILLION IN THIRD QUARTER
-
- NEW YORK (MAY 28) PR NEWSWIRE - Commodore International Limited (NYSE: CBU)
- today reported a net loss of $177.6 million, or $5.37 per share on sales of
- $120.9 million for the third fiscal quarter ended March 31, 1993.
-
- This compares with earnings of $4.1 million, or $.12 per share on sales of
- $194.6 million in the year-ago quarter.
-
- For the nine months ended March 31, 1993 the net loss was $273.6 million,
- or $8.27 per share compared with net income of $49.5 million, or $1.47 per
- share in the same period of the prior year. Sales for the nine months were
- $517.2 million compared with $770.3 million in the year-ago period.
-
- Overall the sales decline of almost 40 percent for the quarter was
- primarily due to prevailing economic softness in all of the Company's major
- markets, especially Germany. There was also significant pricing erosion for
- the Company's older Amiga models and PC products. Unit volume of Amiga
- products declined 25 percent while Amiga revenues declined over 45 percent.
- PC unit volume increased 30 percent, but revenues increased only slightly
- from
- the prior year. C64 computer sales were nominal in the quarter.
-
- The unit sales decline and severe pricing erosion during the quarter,
- primarily in the month of March, had a substantial adverse effect on
- profitability for the March quarter. In light of this significantly changed
- business environment, the Company reevaluated projected inventory values and
- determined that writedowns of $65 million were required to reduce inventory,
- including the older Amiga products, to current estimated net realizable
- value.
- In addition, the Company made a provision of $70 million for special pricing
- and promotional allowances, additional restructuring costs, and asset
- writedowns.
-
- Irving Gould, chairman and chief executive officer, stated: "We are
- extremely disappointed with our results for the first nine months of this
- fiscal year. We believe that Commodore's technology, brand name and
- distribution network continue to have significant value and we are exerting
- all of our efforts to restructure the company to take advantage of these
- values during this period of severe difficulty."
-
- Commodore International Limited through its subsidiaries around the world
- is a manufacturer and marketer of computer-based products for professionals
- and consumers. The company's major product group is Amiga multimedia

- Mark,
-
- Now that is what I call dedication: going into a frig in order to compute. I
- am definitely impressed! :)
-
- We had a heat wave here in NY today. 37 degrees.
-
- As cold as it was ( and we broke all records) we never went below zero. Did
- get to 4 degress tho, which is close enough.
-
- I think I am ready to visit Florida. Or, maybe Puerto Rico?

- Now for a 64 laptop that can take the cold.

- Opps , sorry about the blank message above. My phone line from the modem
- froze up and I had to get a hair dryer on it so the data would start flowing
- again.
-
- Well the last I heard the high for today was something like 17 below zero!
- When I went to work this morning it was 28 below. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
- Same thing is predicted for tonight again. Kids love it, no school again ;)

- Mark,
-
- Well, at least you can quote all those temperature readings in the "below
- zero" category.
-
- Here it is just plain old cold, and nothing startling to show for it....
-
- While I am thinking about it, I wonder if perhaps you could help me with a
- scientific experiment I have been intending to conduct. You see, when I was
- in high school they told us that the colder wires would get, the faster the
- electrons would travel. So I was wondering if you could check out that frozen
- telephone wire and let us all know if all this sub-zero weather is actually a
- way to increase 2400 bps up a notch or two?
-
- And, while doing all this experimenting: It would sure be intersting to know
- how much cold actually enters the house from the frozen telephone wires....
-
- I think I liked the July 8th melt better...

- Howie,
-
- I tried the experiment with the 'frozen' phone line vs a warm one and didn't
- notice any difference in baud rate. One thing I discover though is that
- it sure is easier to type now that I don't have to wear mittens to keep
- my hands warm! ;> Yep, temps are back to normal here. Even above normal!

- Frozen fingers and phone lines, huh?
- Well, I do have a few fingertips that were cutup slightly making it sore to
- type. But as some of you know, I travel all the time carrying my C64C from
- motel to hotel to motel all across the USA.
- I have been in the L.A. area of California for 3 weeks now. The temperature
- here is in the 80's. It rained for the 1st time this year today. The rest of
- the time it is between 75 and 85 here during the day. But during the night it
- drops into the 40's during the winter.
- But before you say that I wish that I was there, think about how they do the
- Rock-AND-Roll out here. They REALLY Rock and Roll out here! The big earthquake
- hit here Monday with a force of 6.6. But because of the unusual way it hit, it
- had the effect of a much larger quake in places. The week prior to quake,
- there were two quakes in the bay off of Long Beach measuring 3.5. Since the
- quake there have been 4 aftershocks measuring between 5.0-5.9, (A 5.0 is
- considered a major quake) a half dozen measuring between 4.0-4.9 (The most
- recent one was at 8:15 pm today), and a total of about 2,000 aftershocks. This
- will probably continue for years... (Yesterday, there were four 4.4
- aftershocks from 4 seperate faults.) Some sinkholes have started to appear
- close to the beach soon after the main quake. The main Earthquake lasted 40
- seconds and over 20,000 people are without a home because of it. Many people
- are sleeping in tents and makeshift shelters because they are afraid to sleep
- in a building with a roof. (Several 3 story buildings became 2 story buildings
- with the ground floor apartments or garages being flattened. The majority of
- deaths were because of this.)
- It sort of looks like you have your choice. You can put up with artic
- weather, or come and watch me do the Rock & Roll. Neither one is a picnic

- Living Proof, Ltd., developer and publisher of 'I Paint', has now released
- I Port'--- which allows you to import GIF, Mac, Geos, Basic8, Doodle, and
- Printshop files into I Paint's 640x400 interlaced color screen ---
- Sophisticated 'PALETTE EQUALIZER' allows you to set just how reddish, or
- greenish, or how bright, etc., a picture is converted from GIF! --- Replace
- any GEOS or Doodle color with any interlaced 16x16 color!
-
-
- Also, EXPORT I Paint to GIF...
-
- I Port costs 24.95 (postpaid) from:

- Thanks for the kind words. I have not dealt with any but 'GIF87a' files, but I
- THINK I Port will allow any later version by skipping unknown extensions. ---
- I Paint is NOT required. I Port stands alone. For simply viewing I Paint
- files, either use IVS, or open them under I Port's IPAINT to GIF option.
- They'll be displayed before converting, and you can abort back to opening a
- different file... so it's kind of like driving a Porsche at rush hour, but no
- harm done. :) --- I Ports DOES require 64K of VDC RAM. The Doodle import can
- use a mouse, but doesn't require it.

- Howie, Thanks! I dug around and found a Spring '92 catalog from them. They are

-
- I like the idea of that along with I Paint(I read the description). I run an

- how to port it over(Null modem probably) to the 128.

- Oh yes! Software Support International is quite active and alive and well and

-
- As for porting program material between the 128 and any other computer either
- a null modem connection, or a modem to modem connection using a piece of
- telephone wire should do very nicely.

- I use BIG BLUE READER for the 128 and CROSSDOS for the Amiga to convert files-
- it's a little roundabout, converting from Amiga to IBM on the 1000, then
- putting the 3.5" IBM format disk into the 1581 and BBRing it to Commodore
- format, but it works and I'm a fairly patient person.
- So, has anyone gotten IPort yet...? I saw the ad too, and it looks way
- cool. NOW all I have to do is allocate about $50 for IPaint and IPort... SOON!
