- I received my letter. I was kind enough to send in the $50. It just
- basically says that because of some of the complaints and lack of support
- that the ZIP chip was being dropped in favor of a few other Commodore
- projects. Which, if successful, might bring the ZIP chip back onto the front
- burner for production. I have to say that I am disappointed. I would have
- really liked to see one. I would have been willing to order one sight-unseen
- if JBee could have used the money to make one. Unfortunately, there are
- limits to me capabilities. I can't do the cost of producing a production
- level product, so I can only be disappointed. Somewhat in Jbee, and somewhat
- in the Commodore community.

- Interesting to hear Doc, I haven't been much on the C= scene in awhile, and I
- hadn't heard anything about the ZIP board in about 19 months. Now that I am
- back on GEnie I am sorry to hear that it didn't go over. I make relatively
- little per year myself, so GEnie is a big luxury for me, else I would have
- surely put in a few bucks at least. I am curious though; what were the
- complaints you mention? I don't see how anybody could complain about a product
- like a speedup board. If you need the speed, you buy it, if you don't, then
- you don't. What is there to complain about?

-
- Consider this more a "leak" than a product announcement ;)
-
- (he said I could offically "leak" this to you and anyone interested can
- leave there name here). RIO will also have a product support section
- here on GEnie :)
-
- Once we get his account set up and category started you can post messages
- on the BB to him.
-
- The new product is a REAL genlock for the C-64 (and if enough people
- are interested a C-128 RGBI -> NSTC genlock). The cost will be under
- $300, come with titling software, and will out perform any dedicated
- titling machine. This is just a "tip" of the iceberg when you hear
- what he has to offer ;)
-
- Some of you may have remembered my post about the C-128 RGBI->NSTC
- a while back, I must have been a reason forasking it ;)
-
-
- Now this is a TRUE high quality genlock suitable for cable operators and
- such or someone who wants to run characters or C64 video (animations)
- onto tape for broadcast. You guys probably don't know this but we have
- C-64 users that use their C-64s for public access cable right
- here online.

- I got a demo tape from them on this product. My major complaint was that its
- effect generator (an extra cost item) would do wipes and things only within
- the confines of the 64's border. This is quite annoying to have a transition
- with the 64's border getting in the way either showing the picture through or

- I believe you might be able to do wipes and such with PD software vs. the
- special effects module. You should also be able to display any C-64
- graphic and place it over the VCR video signal, though any black color
- will be not transfered.

- I relize that it keys out Black. Buying the effect's modual wasn't my
- complaint. Simply that in the demo tape it appeared that the effect's modual
- didn't overcome the problem of the border.
-
- So if you were doing a wipe and you had a black border, the middle of the
- screen would have the effect, but the edges would retain the original picture
- (or else you have a colored border around every effect you do).

- Yes, but that means all the effects still happen within the border, even if
- the border is invisible. This new system, since it is hardware based, should
- overcome that problem. I'm hoping that an update of the software is possible.
- I know that many people have been turning the border two different colors
- using raster interrupts. If you could fine control that in a pattern, you
- could overcome that problem and do a wipe across the enire screen.

- We all ought to be more considerate of our eyes.
-
- I was cautioned a long time ago by someone who had the awful experience of
- having spent long periods working close to a monitor, only to later be told
- that, as a result, he now has permanent scaring and irrepairable damage to the
- retinas of both eyes.
-
- His advise for anyone spending any amounts of time before a monitor is: tinted
- glasses, WITH anti-glare, AND ultra-violet protective coatings. I followed
- this advise, along with his additional recommendation for the use of a tinted,
- polarized screen filter.
-
- It results in an outstandingly crisp screen, with minimal reflective
- interference, and no eye fatigue.
-
- He also suggested that the glasses receive periodic UV re-coatings since this
- tends to wearout with normal use.
-
- Considering that ones eyeballs must last for the duration, these all seem to
- be very reasonable precautions.

- Any fairly new monitor since the 80s radiates less UV than most background
- noise and is NOT a source of UV radiation. So getting extra coating on
- your lenses is a waste of money. There are also no studies done that

-
- Now that is not to say, that if some other machine will do something

- It really all depends upon what a user may require.
-
- Today, I am finding my 128 doing more things than I ever imagined it would

- And, speaking of the absurd... We were, wern't we...?

- I was recently involved in helping an Asian oil refinery find new

- costly, and they got an estimate for ms/dos replacements at a cost of

- I don't expect any improvements in either version of Wizard from the author,
- what we have is it. For the C64 you might try BELLTERM or NOVATERM, both
- are excellent programs. (they work at 2400 baud too ;)
-
- This new GEnie pricing is great! Let's see...under the old pricing, going
- online only 3 hours a month in say the libraries would be about $23 right?
- With the new pricing that same 3 hours would be about $18. Then there is
- something about "up to 4 hours free" each month. Don't quite understand
- how that is going to be set up, but it sounds neat!
-
- btw, I'll move this topic over to category #2 ;)

- My interpretation of the e-mail that I recieved was simple -- 4 hours of
- service FREE per month. This is probably being done to offset little things
- like e-mail, so while yes, you do have to pay for it, 4 hours of free time
- (for $9 a month) is very liberal indeed! :) Of course, My habits on GEnie
- will change, too (as will most everybody's), and I will be using text uploads,
- etc, instead of being lazy and typing it on the spot. My evaluation thus far
- is simply that the new system (hey, I'm not particularly fond of changes
- either!) will work as good or better for me, and I'm probably about a "Joe
- Average", as fas as usage goes. Also, services will expand in my opinion.
- Access to the Internet with no surcharge is one example I can think of!

- huh?
-
- 3 hours at the old pricing is $18 for me. And when the new pricing goes into
- effect that gets reduced to $9. Or, $3 per hour.
-
- This makes the Commodore 64/128 RoundTable, it Bulletin Boards, Libraries, and
- Real Time Conferences the best bargain around.
-
- Did I leave anything out? :)

- Unforatunately, I only have a 64 and can't use RTC 128.
-
- I agree that that the new rates will make the Flagship a better bargain. Also,
- I plan on getting a 2400 baud modem before July and will be experimenting with
- Novaterm scripts.

-
- Actually, you *are* fortunate ;)
-
- I will be giving seminars later in June about using GEnie and Commodore
- terminals to maximum advantage.
-
- For what it is worth, I expect very few of our RT members to leave and
- expect a BIG increase from other services. We will be expanding our
- RTC hours to reflect that change.
-
- I remember paying something like $12 an hour to access GEnie (I use to
- be a paying member in 86;) and I think $3.00 an hour is a great deal
- and affordable. With the bigger graphic files available for viewing,
- downloading, and converting, for active Commodore users I think this
- will be a big advantage.
-
- I think the only ones that will *really* leave and complain the loudest
- are those that forced a change in the flat rate service by making GEnie
- a life (style) by spending 100+ hours a month in Basic service and
- NEVER venturing to outside of the $4.95 a month charge. Just read some
- of the posts by people in Cat 1 Topic 49 of the GENIEus BB!
- Anyway, this change makes GEnie the leading value in online services for
- those that use their computer for something other abusing GEnie*Basic
- services. I LIKE that and that is my opinion.
-
- Also, someone earlier mentioned four free hours, they are four CREDITED
- hours plus the monthly charge. Also with these new rates, access by
- those in Canada becomes extremely affordable!

- I am here to STAY! GEnie was a good bargain when I started here about
- a year ago, and it will be an even better bargain after 1 July.
- I'm looking forward to spending more time in the RTCs!!!!!!

- I will be definitely coming to GEnie more than ever with the new rates
- beginning July 1! With 4 hours of free time and $3.00 per hour aafterwards,
- it's gonna be even better for us in the Commodore areas! Now, after July 1,
- maybe we should get some of Q-Link's members to come over here!

- Great!! After the news spreads, you sysop guys and gals will have your hands
- & fingers full!! By the way, I found out from Q-Link how many members they
- still have. If you want to believe, they still have around 15,000 members!
- Sounds like the truth is added by a few zeros. I did found out there are
- people who got in a lifetime membership years ago ($150), so that could count
- for most of that amount.

- I would stay on Q if they would offer the same pricing plan as they do their
- AOL Customers. But, pay more for less (err no) service? no way!
-
- At 2400 baud, GEnie will be the Q-Equivalent of $1.50 an hour.

- for the lack of a local node. Glad to see the 8 bits surviviing.

- I have been on both Qlink and Genie for a long time (in terms of C= years)
- and found they nicely complimented each other in terms of supports for our c
- C= commies, but with the management 'form letters' I keptt
- getting from the management from my complaints of the directories (over a 6
- months period), I got fed up and finally dropped the service.
- The ironic s thing about it was... afterwards, I received a nother form
- letter, (only this one in the mail) from the management informing me of their
- displeasure that I left, but that I really ought to give AOL a try, since it's
- the 'i like an enc hanced version of Q-link'.
- How stupid do they think I am? I ou wouldn& 't didn't like the way
- they were running the first network (in the last year or two a , atleast), so
- why do they think I would wanto to put up with them on the parasite that
- has su helped suck the life out of Q.
-
- I hope this doesn't sound bitter or anything, because I really do wish them

- If you have a 9600 modem, sometimes using the 1-800 WATTS line is a

- A now non-existing CraigB15 has been making posts on QLink saying Q will shut

- That is precisely why I left Qlink, because they would not announce anything

- I just had to say my views about the lowering of Q-Link. It is now past July
- 1st, and Q-Link is still there, if you call what's left of it. I have seen
- RabbitJack's Casino area being left empty, like the list of weekly highest

-
- We all know Q-Link will leave soon, problem is when? Only AOL knows.
