- I wonder if you might have tried: go 128

- Yes I tryed go 128 in 64 mode but it don't work. I tryed running a 128 program
- in 65 mode. Don't work. I am on my c65 now! with my Aprotek minimodem c24.
- Using nova term in 64 mode on the c65. The 2nd SID chip is addressed to $d420
- the 1st is $d400. Showdow of them at at $d440 for the 1st SID and $d460 for
- the 2nd SID chip. After that something else is addressed at $d480. There is a
- jumper in it that says NTSC I jumped it but no diffints. The video in RGB
- don't look good. gray and wight colors go all wight. Switch to 40 modem and
- it's just black and witht but clear. At lest in mine the bilt in 1581 don't
- work good. I have to put a disk in and out then some times can get a dir. And
- some times load a file. So I just run a changed device program gthat came with
- my 1581. so I don't have to use the bilt in 1581. A lot of programs work in 64
- mode! I know stereo editer works and it did not when I tryed with the Turbo
- master CPU that has a c5c02 and this c65 usis like a 65c02 the 65 bilt in
- monitor will show c5c02 codes. I don't now how this modem is working because
- this is suppos to have a bilt in ulta chip. I wander how it hooks up? O well I
- will see if I can get a stereo player to work with this. But is't hard because
- it is not at a start of a page and have to change the other byte too. Mybe
- stereo player 10.04 will be out if I can do it.

- Well Some things about the c65. I am on it now. I did have some problums with
- the video. But I was using digital RGB mode. I put it to Analog RGB and it
- works and looks a lot better! I have having problums with the right cerser key
- It was because the top cuver of this c65 was rubbing aganst the key. I
- chissoled some plasic off with a knuff. The same problum was with the disk
- drive. Tjhe bilt in 1581. Plasic would not let the disk set good in the drive.
- I knuffed if off too and now it works very good. As a fast 1581 in 64 modem on
- the C=65. I don't think it's as fast as jiffydos but seems to be all most as
- fast. I think it only uses 1 CPU to do the computer and disk drive. It looks
- like this has a 256k ROM chip in it for all the ROM. It don't look like in 64
- mode it uses any thing but the 2nd sid chip in 65 mode. I will you could go
- the +3 mhz. But don't look like it can. I think the RS232 switch in 65 mode to
- a aulta type. I hope we can get some info on how to program this in 65 mode.
- Else this is just a 64 with bilt in 1581.

- How could we get some info on the c65? Is there any way? The expansion port
- has 50 pins. Could there be some way to convert it to use c64 cartridges?
- This must be the best 8 bit computer. It seems like about 550% of programs run
- in 64 mode. In 65 mode it has some commands that say unimplemented command
- error. Like rgr, width, sprdef, quit, off set, viewport, and pic. The ones I
- have found. It has genlock that I don't know how to use or what it does. It
- has backup. I can't figger it out. In 64 mode it will not clear the 2nd SID
- chip but in 65 mode it will with a RUN STOP, RESTORE. I guess Fred Browd or
- how every you spell his name would know about this. How could we get a hold of
- him. Some one should send him all this text in this topick. If Commodore
- finnshed this and sold it, how menny would get it? It looks like a very good
- computer. Better then the 128 you don't have to swop screens 80 and 40 are all
- in RGB. But the 64 mode has some problums. It seems like no fast loads will
- work with it. One good thing is the screen will not make diz. sound sound any
- diffint with the screen on or off! This VIC 3 must not take any timming out of
- the CPU. This computer don't get hot at all to! no heet sinks on any chips!

- We currently got our two new c65's to Germany. It came (nice for us) with a
- 220 Volt power supply and PAL, but it didn't contain any documents. So I'll
- ask this question here: How do I get the 320x200x256 color mode? Most commands
- are c128like, but some are not. GRAPHIC, for example, does always give a
- syntax error :( Three or four of the commands already in ROM produce an
- "UNIMPLEMENTED COMMAND ERROR", while the ROM-version still is 0.9.90111. There
- are other interesting commands like GENLOCK, but no description at all. Has
- anybody else made other "investigations"? Thanks for help in this case Yours
- Matthias *s Something more (now online): We actually didn't find that much
- programs running in c64-mode. GEOS doesn't ( [C [D [D [D. Most games do have
- problems with their sound. There are a lot of jumpers on the board, but we
- couldn't figure out one to change the device number of the internal drive. In
- 40 and 80 columns the screen is very bright and colorful, but as I wrote, the
- new VGA-mode isn't to find. One nice "bug": If you format a disk in 64-mode,
- you have to write ..."N0:test,xx" while with the 64 the "N" is enough... The
- board is assembled in Hongkong, keyboard by Mitsumi, drive by Chinon. The
- BasicV10 sits in bank 3 while in bank 2 there is the floppy-rom. The drive has
- its own FDC but no CPU.

- We know it have a command called genlock because you can use the bilt in
- monitor to see the ROM and this command is in it with others and genlock don't
- give a unimplemented command error. With this you can store a byte from 0 to
- ffff in bank 1 but $1f800 to $1ffcf is color for the 80 collum just like $d800
- is on the 64 and this color ram is 8 bits wide not just 4! In 65 made I can't
- figger out how to see the input output of the SID chips. But in the roms its
- at $d400 and $d420. The control G will dig on one side and play will sound on
- the other side the vide U shapped DIN plug will out put in mono that is both
- SID chip. I wish some one could tell us some good info on this.

- === LONG POST WARNING! ===
-
- It has arrived!
-
- After sacrificing a good deal of time I should have been sleeping (and paying
- for it that night at work), I learned a few things about the C65:
-
- First, a 1581 power supply (at least the one I have) *is* sufficient to power
- the machine. The power supply does get quite warm in doing so, but I worked
- at least a few hours today with no problems. However, for long term
- reliability (of the power supply), I would still advise the use of something
- with more reserve, such as a CMD HD power supply, or a PC power supply with a
- 4-pin DIN grafted on.
-
- The only flaw I have found in the construction of the machine is that the
- right cursor key binds. This was true for another person on comp.sys.cbm, and
- in his case, turned out to be a fixable construction flaw. Since I will be
- taking mine apart, I should be able to remedy this on mine in much the same
- manner as he did.
-
- The cursor keys are in a inverted "T" arrangement, just like the Amiga and
- most modern PC keyboards.
-
- The C65 screen comes up beautifully on my 1080's screen in gloriously crisp
- RGB analog, with a deep blue background, and white text, defaulting to 80
- columns. The borders are very small, giving more screen real estate than a
- C64. Their is a rainbow of color bars at the top left, the "COMMODORE C65
- DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM" logo, and the BASIC 10 logo with the revision number
- (which is 0.9xxxxx something; I forgot to write all those numbers down
- <grin>). Oh, and it also says "NO EXPANSION RAM PRESENT". (The C65 has a
- hatch on the bottom roughly 3" x 6" [I have not measured it yet] with an
- expansion connector inside, similar to the Amiga 500 and 1200).
-
- Now for some info most of you might find of some interest, but fellow and
- future C65 owners will especially want to take note of. (Most of this message
- will be posted on the Commodore groups on Delphi, GEnie, and comp.sys.cbm).
-
- FUNCTION KEYS:
-
- F1 - Toggles from 40 columns to 80
- F3 - "DIR"
- F5 - Moves cursor to beginning of prior word (or space if blank line)
- F7 - Moves cursor to beginning of next word
- F9, F11, F13 - No apparent function
- HELP - "HELP"
-
- The shifted function keys:
-
- F2 - Erases all below cursor
- F4 - "DIR "*=PRG""
- F6 - "KEY 6"
- F8 - Goes in machine language monitor
- F10, F12, F14 - "KEY x" (x = fkey#)
-
-
- Issuing a "PRINT FRE(0)" command gives a result of 57,085. An argument of (1)
- gives 55,296. (2) gives 0, and (3) gives an illegal quantity error.
-
- POKE 53280,x still changes the border color, but there is a BORDER command
- that does the same (and a FOREGROUND and BACKGROUND command, as well). Only 1-
- 16 is accepted, in both 40 and 80 column mode, so evidently the 265 color
- mode is not available in text mode (or at least, is not the default). 0-255
- is accepted if one uses the POKE, but it rolls over after each increment of
- 16, resulting in the same colors.
-
- THE REGISTER COMMAND DECIPHERED:
-
- The REGISTER command takes the following form:
-
- REGISTER x,y,a,b,c
-
- x = 0 or 1 (I don't know what this does yet) y = 0-255 (the register number) a
- = 0-15 (red value) b = 0-15 (green value) c = 0-15 (blue value)
-
- Unfortunately, this has no effect on the text screen, and the GRAPHIC command
- apparently has a different syntax than the C-128's BASIC.
-
- OTHER NEW COMMANDS DECIPHERED (at least partially):
-
- DMA: Accepts DMA0,DMA1,DMA2,DMA3. I do not know what this does, other
- than the fact that a value of 1 or 3 fills the screen with "@"
- symbols.
-
- TYPE: Apparently displays a file (sequential) to screen. (Sorry folks,
- I did not have my disks handy to try this out).
-
- PEN: Form is PEN x,y, where x=0-2, and y=0-255.
-
- DPAT: Form is DPATx, where x=0-63
-
- GENLOCK: Either GENLOCK ON or GENLOCK OFF. You will note a difference
- in the screen, but I doubt this will do much without
- genlock hardware. <grin>
-
- CHANGE: I used the form CHANGE "CHARLE" TO "CHARLIE" , and it did not
- give me an error. I suspect this is a text editing command.
-
- FIND: Using FIND "CHARLIE" gave no error. (In retrospect, I really
- should have written a program with REM CHARLIE in it and then
- tried this.
-
- UNIMPLEMENTED COMMANDS:
-
- Issuing the following commands results in an "UNIMPLEMENTED COMMAND ERROR"
- (BASIC 10 was not yet finished, folks):
-
- PAINT, PASTE, CUT, LOCATE, SCALE, WIDTH, QUIT, OFF, SET, VIEWPORT
-
- There may have been others, but these were the ones I recorded. BTW, if you
- want to search for commands, look in memory, starting around decimal 9380.
-
- OTHER COMMANDS:
-
- Many other commands (such as WINDOW) appear to work just as in BASIC 7.0 on
- the 128. GRAPHIC CLR works, but as noted, the standard 7.0 syntax for GRAPHIC
- otherwise gives a syntax error.
-
-
- BTW, I plan on digitizing the exterior and interior of my C65 and uploading
- the results. Likely I will not have time to accomplish this until the
- weekend. The digitizers I have access to work on the STe (VIDI-ST), and the
- Amiga (DCTV). If anyone knows of a utility that will convert these to a form
- suitable for viewing on a C64/128 (other than GIF, which is all I can do
- now), let me know.
-
- Unfortunately, even with DCTV, the pics will be only greyscale, as I only
- have a B&W camera in my possession. (I have to travel 150 miles to borrow a
- camcorder for use with DCTV, at present).
-
- Also, if there is sufficient interest in seeing, or at least having, these
- pics in their native format, let me know, and I will post them as well.

-
- If you are using an Atari ST, it is best to do the grayscale as dithered

- out is the filter audio in for the other channol of sound. In 65 modem you can
- put a audio out on pins 5 and 7 to run them though the filters in both SID

- Someone else may have answered already, but yes, the F1 key toggles from 40

- My machine was ordered at the end of September, and finally arrived last

-
- I saved money on calls to Grapevine, since except for the calls I made to get

- Trouble with Grapevine! Boy! I have had an order in for a 128 motherboard and
- power supply since Oct 1993.
-
- I received a power supply in Nov and it turned out to be for the 64. I finally
- got one for the 128 this past Fri. I hooked it up Sat and it lasted about five
- minutes before failing.
-
- In the meantime I am spending a small fortune in postage returning items and
- have received no credit todate.
-
- They have often stated they are swamped with backorders and received a bad
- supply of power supplies. Looks like they may still be bad.

- I also am having problems with a order that I place back in the begining of
- Nov 93 for a that REU without the case. I called them a couple times and have
- been given various excuses but they have said that I will recieve one. I
- noticed in there ad that they no longer have the REU as well as the C65. Will
- keep you all up to date.

- I don't know why grapevine bothers to advertize stuff they don't have or cant
- deliver? It just wastes everybodies time.

- Great News! We have recently got the complete "C64 DX System Specs" by
- Commodore, with very god description of all commands, hardware, bustiming and
- so on. Author: Fred Bowen, with contributions by Paul Lassa, Bill Gardei and
- Victor Andrade. Of course, everything is preliminary and dated march 1, 1991.
- While it is stated that "this documentation contains confidential, proprietary
- and unpublished information of CBM Inc.", it was send by Grapevine with a
- greater order of C65`s so I think there should be no problem to spread it
- under c65-owners. One big problem: It is around 500 pages "big" so I cannot
- send more than one piece to US ;-) I think you`ll understand that... Feel free
- to ask questions. I will scan & ocr important pages as I have thetime to and
- upload the text. Bye Matthias

- M.MATTING [mats]:
-
- I've got a question: What is the syntax for the C-65 "GRAPHIC" command (and
- the other graphic-related commands, if you have time).
-
- I'll post any info recieved to comp.sys.cbm and Delphi to help spread the
- wealth (hopefully others will hit CIS and other services).
-
- 500 pages? Yikes. Has anyone in the US volunteered to pay yet for
- photocopying and to act as a "C-65 information source" for other C-65 owners
- (i.e, to photocopy this tome for others for cost + postage)?
-
- If not, could you tell me how much (if you would do it) charge for getting
- the thing copied, and sending it to me?

- What, because you order a lot of C65's they sent you this 500 page info? My
- be you could send it to Parsec, Inc. And he could copy it and sell it to all
- that would like it. I guess he has the stuff to copy something like that.

- If C= would give the permission, the best thing would be to get the
- original ASCII text file and offer it as several SFX files online or
- in printed form. BTW: yes, I do have various binding and copying
- equipment.

-
- Well, here are some of the command explanations:
-
-
-
- GRAPHIC - select graphic mode
-
- GRAPHIC CLR
-
- GRAPHIC command#, [,args]
-
-
-
- Basically this is a modified C64-type SYS command, minus the address. In the
-
- C64DX system, this will represent the ML interface, not the BASIC 10.0 inter
-
- face which is implemented in the development system.
-
- [*** THIS COMMAND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE ***]
-
- GRAPHIC CLR initializes (warm-starts) the BASIC graphic system. It
-
- clears anyexisting graphic modes, screens etc. and allows a program
-
- to commence graphics from scratch
-
-
-
- ((Doesn`t say to much ... mm))
-
-
-
- DMA - Perform a DMA operation
-
-
-
- DMA command [,length,source(l/h/b),dest(l/h/b),subcmd,mod(l/h) [,...]]
-
- [*** THIS COMMAND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE ***]
-
-
-
- The DMA command defines and executes a DMA operation. The parameters are
-
- used to construct a DMA list, which is then passed to the DMA processor
-
- for execution. Refer to the DMA chip specification for details. Chained
-
- DMA commands are not allowed. (...)
-
-
-
- DMA 3,2000,ASC("+"),0,DEC("800"),0 Fill screen with "+"
-
- DMA 0,2000,DEC("800"),0,DEC("8000"),1 Copy screen to $18000
-
-
-
- DMODE - Set graphic display mode
-
-
-
- DMODE jam,comp,inverse,stencil,style,thickness
-
-
-
- jam 0-1, complement 0-1, inverse 0-1, stencil 0-1, style 0-3,
-
- thickness 1-8
-
-
-
- FRE(0) memory left in the program area (bank 0)
-
- FRE(1) memory available in variable area (bank 1)
-
- FRE(2) number of expansion RAM banks present
-
-
-
- GENLOCK - Enable or disable video sync mode & colors
-
-
-
- GENLOCK ON [,color#]
-
- GENLOCK OFF [,color#,R,G,B]
-
-
-
- To enable video sync mode and specify which colors are affected, use
-
- the GENLOCK ON command, and list the palette color indices (0-255)
-
- which will display external video
-
-
-
- MOUSE - Enable or disable the mouse driver
-
-
-
- MOUSE ON [,port[,sprite[,position]]]
-
-
-
- port = joyport 1,2 or both (1-3)
-
- sprite = sprite pointer (0-7)
-
- position(x,y)
-
-
-
- The user must load a pointer into the proper sprite area ($600-$7ff).
-
-
-
- PALETTE - Define a color
-
-
-
- PALETTE [screen#COLOR],color#,red,green,blue
-
-
-
- RMOUSE - Get the mouse position and button status
-
-
-
- SCREEN - Graphic command
-
-
-
- The SCREEN command is used to initiate a graphic command. It always precedes
-
- another command word which identifies the graphic operation to be performed.
-
-
-
- SCREEN CLR color# Clears the currently opened graphic screen using the
-
- given color value
-
-
-
- SCREEN DEF define a graphic screen
-
-
-
- SCREEN DEF screen#,width,height,depth
-
- screen# (0-1), width (0=320, 1=640, 2=1280), height (0=200, 1=400)
-
- depth (1-8 bitplanes = 2-256 colors)
-
-
-
- defines a logical screen, specifies size and color. Does not allow access
-
- to it and does not display the screen.
-
-
-
- SCREEN SET - Set draw and view screens
-
-
-
- SCREEN SET DrawScreen#,ViewScreen# (0-1 both)
-
- screen must be defined and opened first.
-
-
-
- SCREEN OPEN - Open a screen for access.
-
- SCREEN OPEN screen#[,error_variable] (0-1)
-
-
-
- This command actualy sets up the screen and alocates the neccessary memory
-
- for it. If it`s the view screen it will be displayed. If it`s the draw
-
- screen, it can now be drawn to. (...)
-
-
-
- SCREEN CLOSE - Close a screen
-
-
-
-
-
- Hope graphic programming will be possible now!
-
-
-
-
-
- I could send the whole bunch of pages to c128.jbee if he would have the time
-
- to distribute copies. No money neccessary ;-)
-
-
-
- Anybody could contact COMMODORE for asking if it is allowed to
-
- distribute the system specification on GEnie?
-
-
-
- Yours M. Matting [mats]

- Colors could probably be done like they are on the +4/128
-
- COLOR #,#
-
- First number is the mode, second is the color. I would just try
- color 1,1
- color 2,1
- color 3,1
-
- etc and see what changed.
-
- Throw it in an FOR/NEXT loop with either a SLEEP or GETKEY command.

- Ooooh- that should be good. Makes me wish I had stuck with the C65 order
- instead of cancelling it when I found out it was PAL. Ah well.
- Grapevine is ticking me off too. They *still* haven't delivered my
- printer, mouse, and programs I ordered in place of the 65- I call every so
- often, and it's a different excuse each time. First it was waiting on
- ribbons. Then they were waiting for them (printers) to come from their
- warehouse (?- snow too heavy for someone to go over?!?). Last I heard they
- were waiting on paper guides. ***NEVER*** again shall I order from Grapevine.
- I'll consider myself fortunate ***IF*** I get this order, never mind the $20
- difference they'll owe me from what I sent for the 65. I'm wondering what
- horrors I will have to go thru to retrieve that.
