- The 128 version is now in the file area 128 telecommunications under the name

- Global War Term is a term for playing GLOBAL WAR online game, A game much like
- risk. What global war term does is allow you to play the game quicker. It
- stores the maps in the memory of the 128 so they do not need to be sent over
- the phone lines, thus speeding up play tremendously. If you play Global War
- this is definately worth the download.
- It is also a full functioning ANSI term with a good number of typical term
- features, Real time chat mode, 47k buffer Xmodem dl abuility etc. It is for
- the c128 in 80 column mode for HAYES compatible modems.
- It also has a few little extras that no other term I have used for the 128
- does, like SCREEN DUMPING abuility etc. It is not meant to compete with the
- big terminals, but I think you will find it for the most part adequate, and
- definately very usefull if you do play global war.
- It speeds up game play over 100% even at 2400 baud, even more at slower baud
- rates.

- The GW maps are popped up by the BBS software, you cannot have the software
- pop up the maps on your own, unless of course you nullmodem to to your 128
- using it as the term program and hit ESCAPE # capital M I believe (# can be 1-
- 7) The feature is automatic in the software.
- The BBS will send a verification code to the terminal, if the terminal
- supports the GWTERM feature the terminal sends back the ACKnowlegment
- codecode, and from then on the BBS sends only the special codes to tell tthe
- terminal what map to display, if the BBS does not get an ACKnowlege tthen it
- will send the maps via ansi codes.

- The GAME is not built into the term. The game is on the BBS! What is built
- into the term is the abuility to tell the BBS you have this special abuility,
- and the BBS will then treat the term as such. If you do not pplay global war
- this term is just a term, you cannot tell it is GW capable by any commands or

- Global War game on BBS's that have it that the extra ability comes out.

- The game is an online game for IBM BBS's although there are versions for AMIGA

- GWterm 128 will work with the game on both the IBM and AMIGA platform. I know
- of a few places that have it in my area, but alas most do not have very
- active games right now.
- I would suggest calling Joel Bergen's board (he is the origional author of
- the GLOBAL WAR GAME and GWTERM for the IBM.) I do not have his number handy,
- but will post it at a later date. Only drawback is his board is in the state

- What I would suggest is ask around on your local BBS's if there is a board

- As of the version you have NO, it did not support the Swiftlink cartrige.

- sometimes occurs at 19.2k baud (although this data loss problem should be

- I did not get a swiftlink until about 2 months ago, when I purchased a

- RS,
-
- Exactly when are things locking up?
-
- You should not need any different initialization string for 2400 or 9600 bps
- connections. Most all 14.4k modems, Boca's included, are pretty smart, and
- will "sense" what the other modem requires, and connect accordingly.
-
- oh! You aren't by any chance referring to not connecting when making a call,
- as locking up, are you? The reason I ask is that the newer modems require
- extra time to actually establish a connection. Or at least to "negotiatiate"
- with the other modem and to agree at which bps they will talk.
-
- For some long distance calls, I find that it is necessary to allow as much as
- 45 seconds. A shorter time results in the program hanging up during this
- negotiation process, and no connection.

- Nah JBEE, this does not remotely sound like anything hardware related, at
- least as far as the computer is concerned.
-
- However, now that we have a better idea of the prob, it might be related to
- noisy phone lines. Especially if Randy (it is Randy, isn't it?) is using a
- Term with hardware flow control, which is what he should be doing. When a line
- is especially noisy, the Boca, as well as other new 14.4k modems will attempt
- to "re-negotiate" to a lower bps connection with the host modem. If your
- modem offers a LED display you would see the letters `RT' while this is going
- on. During an RT (ReTrain) your keyboard would appear to be locked. The Boca
- will not accept any further data from you, until it has successfully
- renegotiated to a lower bps, or it has hung up the phone line, because it
- could not communicate at any speed. One or the other condition would give you
- back your keyboard.
-
- Does this sound like what might be happening Randy?
-
- If so, the solution is to give the Boca and the host modem enough time to
- complete this process.

- With a user port interface, I think your best bet with the SupraFax is simply
- to keep MNP/LAPM (compression/error correction) disabled. This is easily
- achieved by typing
-
- at\n0 (normal mode) <-- Best bet for user port interfaces at\n1
- (direct mode) at\n2 (reliable mode)<-- Will DISCONNECT if remote computer
- isn't using MNP/LAPM at\n3 (auto-reliable)<-
- - Will connect wit or without LAPM/MNP.
-
- The problem is that using LAPM/MNP waits an additional 3-10 seconds for the
- CONNECT message to be given -- And also, it sends handshake characters (in
- LAPM/MNP mode) that will sometimes confuse a remote bbs system being called,
- if that system's computer doesn't negotiate LAPM/MNP. Typical symptoms are
- being in C/G mode and being thrown into Ascii or worse yet, ANSI mode, all
- because the remote bbs confused those LAPM/MNP handshake chars for a non-C/G
- delete key :)
-
- The Suprafax 14.4 V.32bis also sports TWO NONVOLATILE memories, which can be
- fetched with a simple ATZ0 or ATZ1. Writing to them is as easy as typing
- AT&W0 atd AT&W1.
-
- I like that feature -- I use mine on my BBS, and I have a different memory
- configuration that I use for network mode :)
-
- If you have any other questions, feel free to ask...

- Ed,
-
- The Boca 14.4k is a FAST modem, as you note. It is also SMART.
-
- If it is left (or re-set to its default settings) it will auto-negotiate with
- any modem it connects, and set itself up to use the fastest compatible bps, in
- the case of GEnie, 9600 bps, best compatible compression, and the same for its
- error correction.
-
- All of this can be over-ridden, and the Boca forced to run at whatever the
- user wants.
-
- One factor that seems to be a prob for a new user is that all this smartness
- comes at a price: Generally it takes a lot longer for the fast, smart modem
- to do its negotiating. Whereas 15, or 30 seconds might have been sufficient
- to determine if there is a CARRIER DETECT, it can now take upwards of 45 or 60
- seconds. In other words, the CARRIER DETECT setting within Terminal programs
- like Dialogue *MUST BE RESET* to allow for this extra time it takes to
- negotiate the logon.

- Mark,
-
- Well then, if Wizard will not wait the required 45 or so seconds, a user might
- want to send his/her Boca an AT\N or AT\N1 to disable reliable mode before
- running Wizard.
-
- I'd suggest that this get issued as part of a Wizard's modem initialization
- string. This way, an ATZ will reestablish reliable mode for using other
- terminal programs.
-
- The string could be sent direct once the user is in terminal mode, else maybe
- a line could be added to the Basic starter to send this string?
-
- Adding one line to the Basic starter is the easier (read: do it once and
- forget it) way. I know how to address the RS-232 port in Basic, not quit sure

- You *may* be able to send a modem command in the BASIC loader
- depending on a couple things. Does the Wizard boot send one there?
- If so, Bill's wedges may already be installed and may just tap into
- the chkout/chrout vectors, meaning any calls to the modem are
- sensed and trapped. I know that George Hug's wedge does this, and
- if Bill spliced his into his SwiftLink wedge, this may be possible.
- It would pay to at least try to send it if desired. There is an
- even chance it will work. If the wedge is installed after entry to
- the ML, or if Bill uses direct calls to send characters to the modem
- (that is the way I do it in my stuff), you won't be able to send things
