e Star Commander and Transfer 64 - personally, I recommend
TP> T64. You also might want to get X1541 for a diagram of the cable.
Thanx for the help.. I already have the cable.. I'll be grabbing those files

Subject: Question...

Q-1. Who knows how to change the device numbers for the SFD 100I Drives?
Q-2. What is the default number of the SFD? Is it #8 ( I have an IEEE FLASH)
Q-3. How do I change the device number for the 8050 Drives? (include device
number & pin {jumper} settings).
Q-4. How can you go beyond Device #15 on the Commodore 64 computer?
( in the IEE Flash manual it says that the IEE handles from Device #12
to Device #31 automaticly)
See I have two 1541 drives (device #8 & device #9). I want to keep Device
#10 open ("IF" I can find a CBM hard drive {ei. 9060 or 9090}). Then I have
two 8050 Drives & three SFD drives. I want to hook them all up together.

If I can remember correctly,
Parsec sells the most recent version of the Stereo SID Editor.
What is their address and phone number?
I also understand that they are in charge of distributing the commercial
version of DualTop for GEOS. I want that too.

You can get a SwiftLink and a Boca 14.4K modem from Creative Micro
Designs for US$159. You can also get the Aptotek Minimodem C-24 from
CMD for $69 or from Software Support International for $49.95. It's a
nice little 2400 bps modem that just plugs into the user port.

Check out the fidonet trading echo's ... they are being sold on a
very regular basis.. I've often seen 14.4k modems being sold off for
less than $150 ... 2400's are almost given away these days.
KL> I am also interested in buying an adaptor called shiftlink. Can you

That's a "Swiftlink" not a "Shiftlink". These don't turn up on the
secondhand market very often, so don't go holding your breath for one.
You can buy then new, direct from CMD (Creative Micro Designs) for
just under $40 (USA) .. or about $50 Aust (plus postage).

I have a copy of SAM around somewhere. I have no documentation. I got
the copy when I bought out a former Commodore user's software library.
It may have been pirated for all I know. I never use it myself. It was
fun to play with a couple of times but I didn't get into it at all.

Subject: Compute!'s Gazette
Date: Thu, 25 Jul 96 00:05:00
I was recently elected to be the Public Domain Software
Disk Librarian for my local C= users' group. Lately, I
have been doing some remodeling in the library, compressing
its contents and storing the archives on 1581 disks, etc.
I have noticed, however, that there are some disks which
are either missing or hopelessly damaged in our club's
Compute!'s Gazette disk collection.
Can anybody help me restore and/or complete our set?
We have every disk from May 1984 to February 1995 with the exception of:
2/88, 9/89, 12/89, 7/90, 8/90, 9/90
Also, I have attempted to Convert all of the included GEOS
USR files in this collection over to standard PRG files so
that they can be successfully compressed into the archives
I'm making, although 3 of the 4 USR files on the 6/89 disk
will not convert. Any clues on why this is not happening?
I'm currently using a batch version of Convert 2.5 to do this.
Also, why is there a GEOS USR file called "CALENDAR" on both the 3/90 and
2/91 disks? This particular file on the 3/90 disk is
corrupt and I cannot compare them to detect the differences
between them. I thought it odd to find two GEOS files with
the same name on two different Gazette disks 11 months
apart.
Can anybody supply for me a replacement copy of the 3/90
"CALENDAR" file so that I can restore this particular disk
issue in our library and compress/archive its contents too?
Thanks in advance for any and assistance offered!

The only direct-connect Commodore modem that does 2400 was
made by Aprotek. However, any RS-232 adapter should allow
you to do 2400 with any standard modem.
KL> I am also interested in buying an adaptor called shiftlink.
KL> Can you tell me

I suspect you mean "Swiftlink", which is an RS-232 adapter
that can allow you to do way beyond 2400 (to 38K something
or 56K something, I forget). They are still sold
commercially by CMD; the only way to get one *cheap* would
be to find someone selling a used one.

We have been chatting this up for as long as I have been on

RP> Hi Ron,
RP> Man! That's a good one. Too many people, each doing things their own
RP> way. The docs for QWKRR were done using SuperScript, I think, or at
RP> least with something that formats the same. To print them out, set the
RP> paper so that QWKRR128 V4.3 Documentation prints out on the very top
RP> line of the page. That will give you that header on each page plus a
RP> footer with the page number.
Got it! Thanks for the tip.
RP> Other docs are done differently. Some run it all together and all you
RP> can do is set the DIP for skip perf and let her run. When you do that,
RP> you start on the 3rd line, then it will print 60 lines and skip 6.
Well, left to my own devices I actually start a little further down than
that. My printer (Star NX1000C) is such that it seems better to roll the
top of form perforation up under neath the retaining bar that holds the
paper in place. My page length is set to 54 lines. If set up like that,
print head is actually 5 or 6
lines below the top of the sheet. So if the author of the document has
also put a top margin on the document, I end up starting about a third
of the way down the page.
RP> A page is 66 lines for most 9 pin dot matrix printers. I'm not sure
RP> about the 24 pin printers.
Mine is 9 pin. Find that 66 lines (IMHO) doesn't leave enough of a margin
at top and bottom.
RP> Most docs will have a half inch margin at
RP> top and bottom, or have no margin and expect you to set the DIP.
Well there ya go. I prefer an inch. So that's no doubt the problem.
RP> I know that just added to your confusion and I'm sorry.
Not at all sir. In fact you've helped to shed some light on the subject.

Exactly. And every time I go to read it, the format jumps out at me

Yup. That's where the difficulty lies. So I suppose as long as one is aware
that, one can start the top of the page where the top of the page is supposed
to start, allowing for any offset imposed by the printing device. >8)

RM> And how long is it? 66 lines? 54 lines?

True. Now if I go to my 'all singing - all dancing' wordprocessor on the

name it.
RG> A4 paper is generally printed at 66 lines per page, but this in itself

That's it exactly. If I had my druthers (which I seldom do), those
circulating soft copies of docs would leave the formatting to the user
rather than pre-supposing any common setup.
But then who the hell am I?
RG> Another problem is that some programs used for printing tend to either

There's another one I must re-acquire. My CS-DOS got swallowed somewhere in

Armed with this, I should be able to get it right.

Hi Phil,
Good to hear from you again! You have a great memory, it
has been a long time since you passed along the info on
that Gemini 10X. I guess I just can't stay out of trouble
with those darn printers HA HA.
Looks like for the old bubble jet I will be dumping print
shop for GEOS. Print shop lets me be lazy and fast. It's
been a long time since I have booted my GEOS stuff.
Thanks for the reply and great hearing from you again.

Depends on how frequently the printer is used. WD-40 has a
tendency to gum up if left for long periods and seems to attract
dust like few other compounds. Although there is no warning
about plastics on the label, it has also been known to melt
some computer keycaps (Burroughs/Computer Automation government
models)

then transfers it over to his Commie.

Consider this: I'm talking about 12 years of collected
commodore stuff. I'd guess if I could piece it all out at
half what it origianlly cost, I'd get maybe 4 times what
I'm asking as a bulk deal.
Also if you do decide you want this stuff, a few other things to think about.
theres a CW/ converter in a plugin (only works on the 64.)
A term program for the 64 on a plugin. both with docs.
about 5 5 1/4 cases of filled software. Books,
manuals,etc..
To ship it anywhere someone doesn't actually pick it up in
person, I would have to CASE it all in a wooden case. I'd
say consider 100 lbs shipping as a conservative guess. I
wouldn't even think of using cardboard for this type of
shipment.
Oh yeah this will be coming from Cocoa Florida.. On the
map, mid state and on the east coast.
If you decide to take it, figure shipping for 100 pounds.
If it's more than 100 lbs, I'll eat the difference. If
less, I'll return the diff.

When I went to remove a keyboard connector from the
motherboard of my 128, one of the wires broke real close to
the connector.
My solution: Go to Radio Shack and ask for a crimp-type DB9 comnnector
(be sure to specify female). It'll be under $2.00.
The pins in the package are on a tree.
With a small jeweler's screwdriver, push the old pin out.
(they are pushed from the wire side) As you push, you will
see the connector emerge from the case. Pull this out the
rest of the way with pliars.
Okay. Push the wire through the connector and attach the
new pin. make sure everything is crimped down well. There
are 2 crimp zones on the pin. One is for the wire, the
other is for the insulation.
When everything is well, push the new pin into the plastic
