<giggle> It's true. We're the most frugal computer users there are.
Although I've heard WD-40 isn't good for the printer, but I don't
remember the specifics of it.

You probably didn't do anything wrong. There are a couple of things
that can go wrong when you get files from the Internet, depending on
how you get the file, though.
If you use FTP, you must remember to type the word "binary" as a
command before getting the file.
If you use WWW, it's possible that the file was incorrectly transferred
as a text file rather than a binary file. To avoid this, you can have
a file in your home directory (if you have a UNIX style account) named
"mime-types". Within the file, (it's just a text file), it should
look like:
application/octet-stream sfx arc sda ark c64 prg lnx lbr caf ca- sdi
Include ANY Commodore program type suffixes you can think of, and when
you use lynx to grab files, they should transfer correctly.
Cheers,
Gaelyne

Subject: to be or not?
Date: Sat, 20 Jul 96 07:20:00
Hi All,
As more and more commie user groups go belly up. Our club is
deciding whether to close our BBS, or not. Financially we can't afford
the rent and costs to keep a BBS running, our club has been offering
free access to the board with unlimited ul/dl's and yet we only get
maybe a dozen calls in a month(mostly from my son).
The system is a 286, with small HD. I am wondering what my "friends" on
the echo would do, should I take over the board and pay the phone bills
myself and leave it the same? Or should I start a True Commie board
with a 128 as the brains behind the system. Can I use the Hard drive in
the 286 for the mass data storage(for a 128 system) or would I need a
cmd device? which I cannot afford.
These are all questions that will need to be answered in the near
future and am hoping for some input to help guide me through this
endeavor.

You know, of course, that free advice is worth what you pay for it? ;-]
Forget the club BBS. Find another board locally with a
helpful sysop, and see if you can talk him into creating a
Commodore area. Offer to moderate it, and to upload or
otherwise transfer some of the better C= files for download.
The downside is that if the guy takes his board down, you've wasted some
effort. The upside is that you don't have the expense or
hassle of running your own board; local BBS support stays
available for whoever wants it (and it doesn't sound like a
huge demand anyway); the downloadable files should at least
whet any user appetites for more and may cause more people
to show up at a user group meeting to become a member; etc.
Much more elegant solution.

I am having no problems with my 28.8 Sportster on my 128D, but I gather
from reading the USR echo that some of the newer 33.6 Sportsers indeed
have a freezing problem, and the temporary fix is to turn off the
compression with at&k0. I ordered the 33.6 Sportster upgrade before I
knew any of this (I didn='t keep up on the USR echo), and the chip has
not come yet, so I have no first hand knowledge of the problem. The
newer Sportsters have something like a 90MHZ clock rate, while my
Sportster still has the older 20MHZ clock rate, so I'm not sure how
that affects this problem, if at all. I hope whenever they send the
upgrade chip it contains the bugfix, assuming I'll need it going to
33.6! :)

kernal (ep)rom ala JDos. Is it possible to get the two to reside
together, perhaps by relocating the Quicksilver code to and eprom that
goes into the spare socket or am I stuck with non JDos machine when I
wish to use my plotter? Is there some other way of getting the plotter
to run with a JDos machine? Any ideas? I've seen the Commodore IEEE
interface, did it need any software to make it work? If so would it
work with DJos and Homedesigner 128?
Can you help?

You mean you don't think it's compiled BASIC? I didn't want to believe
it, myself, until I ran Mark Dickenson's Blitz!/Austrospeed decompiler
on it. (I'm referring to the 109 block file, which basically runs the

I'd hum a few bars of the file, but I don't think it would make much
sense to most folks. Since I just reviewed the US Copyright Law, though,
I might make it available via email to the unbelieving. Posting it here

Don't get me wrong; Novaterm has a nice interface, and does its job
adequately. It's just that writing in ML would be preferable than
compiled BASIC, especially if one requests more than $20 for the

Agreed... and it certainly wouldn't be any a lesser of a program even

Oh ? Why do you say that ? Surely you can't honestly put a value on
a program simply because it is written in a particular language ?
I'd much rather pay $20+ for a program like Novaterm (assuming it is
compiled BASIC), than I would for a lesser program written in
assembler.

Correct. I think the one you need is Quicksilver 128
interface; probably still available from CMD. (Even in
Sweden, you DO know about CMD, don't you?)
The other solution is to visit more flea markets until you
find an 8032 or SuperPET 9000 to go with the drive. If you
find a 4040 or similar drive for the PET/CBM-- such drive
having essentially the same format as the 1541-- you could

You can use it on your 128, All you need is an IEEE Flash 64 card (this is
for 128's & 64's). It is made by Skyles Electronic Works. I have 2 8050 Drives
here on the shelf, as well as 3 1001SFD's. This is why I picked up the IEEE
Flash..

Hello all,
Having lots of trouble with Fido on this end. I
think I've been getting most of the posts but have not been
able to send any messages. My SYSOP thinks its fixed so
THIS IS A TEST. Hope it finally goes out. If anyone sees
this please let me know.
Also someone was looking for information on C= BBSs earlier:
Our local one here is:
The Dungeon
Scorpio (SYSOP)
(615) 648-0577
He is currently networked with several other C= boards also.
Again hope this gets out finally. Thanks for all the good
tips I've been able to eavesdrop on. <G>.

I have uploaded TWSCANBJ.SFX and TWSCANBJ.TXT to
ccnga.uwaterloo.ca and also to ftp.funet.fi. I will also
send them to 221 Baker St.
They are on the waterloo site in the incoming 128utilty
directory and are already active. The Finland site may take
a couple of days to make them active for FTP.
The are also available for download or FREQ from the BBS in
the origin line of this message. First time callers can
download.
These arethe printer drivers for The Write Stuff written by
Ron Hackley of Fun Graphics Machine. THey were written
specifically for the Canon BJ200e but should work with all
Canon BJ printers and with all 24 pin printers that have an
Epson mode.

Subject: PKT files and WWW site
Date: Mon, 22 Jul 96 11:25:00
G'day All,
I posted the following message in the COMMODOR Mail List and thought
I'd post it here, too, as someone (David Veatch?) was asking about
Browser's ability to view PKT files, and because of the information
about the changes for my WWW site:
I'll start a new web page on my site for samples of CBM related Fidonet
mail, with either a link to download the .PKT files (which can be read
with Rod Gasson's Browser program), -or- as plain text, depending on
how things work out.
The pkt files can be read as plain ASCII but the formatting for the
To/From/Date/Echo headers will be a bit messy.
The main reason for doing this is so those on the Internet can see the
type of messages they can find in the CBM Fidonet echos.
I make no promises or guarantees on how often I'll update the file.
After all, the reason for presenting the material is so people can see
what the CBM Fidonet echos are all about -- not to supply the echos for
people to read. In other words, what I'll have available is a *sample*
of Fidonet CBM echo mail that's periodically updated.
This will take me a few days to get organised - but as soon as it's
going I'll post another message.
Also, while on the subject of my WWW site, the permanent and ONLY
location for it is now:
http://hal9000.net.au/~moranec
I'm sorry I couldn't keep a USA mirror site, but the good news is that
it'll be a lot easier for me maintain and keep just one site updated
rather than two.
Cheers,
Gaelyne

Subject: SFD
Date: Mon, 22 Jul 96 23:59:00
I have been having some unusual trouble with a SFD of mine. It was running
fine all until a few days ago, when out of the blue the
drive became active. I looked over at it and there was no
activity light on, and the power light was still green, but
it did not shut off. After waiting about a minute I turned
it off and on again, and the thing reset fine, but when I
went to read the disk it could not find the directory. I
placed another disk in the drive and it read it fine. So I
took the (now) bad disk out and placed a blank one in,
formatted it, and then copied the files back onto it from a
backup. Then it worked fine for another while, but the same
thing has happened and the directory lost. Is this a sign
of old age or is the thing gone on a disk-assasinating
spree? I can't leave any disk in the drive while it is on
anymore for fear of the same problem returning. Does anyone
know what it is doing and even better how to fix it? I
doubt it is a heat problem because it sits by itself on the
desk, nothing under it (but desk) and nothing above it (but
roof) so it's likely not that, and the other SFD is even
closer to the monitor than it so I doubt it is electrical
interference from that... It just seems sort of spurratic
and wild, crazy, unpredictable, dangerous sort of thing.
Any help is appreciated. Thanx. Cube

You might be interested in 64NET. This program allows the PC to be a
slave to the C64, and the CBM can use the storage resources of the PC.
If you have Internet access, it's available via FTP at
ccnga.uwaterloo.ca/pub/cbm/ or you can download it on first call to
221b Baker St BBS at (904) 862-8643. Sign on as "Commodore Caller" with
password of "CBM" (without the quotes, of course). I've forgotten the
exact filename, but 64NET*.ZIP should get it. It is zipped with PKZip
2.04g, which the CBMs cannot dissolve, but you need a DOS box to use
it, so it was left in that form.
Cheers,
Phil
