CNN reported today that ESCOM has files for bankrupcy protection.
They lost USD 118 last year. They plan to 'lose' half their staff and
sell non-core businesses. Some product lines will also go.
There was no mention of the CBM name etc...

Can anyone give me their opinion of this printer?  I would assume that it
can be driven by GEOS.  Is there anything I should look for?  I have
found a used one.

Any input would be appreciated.

I can't tell you anything specific about the 1750 clone not working with
the SX64.

I can tell you that some 1764 and 1750 REU's will not work with some SX64=
s.
The reason for this is that the socket on the expansion port sits too dee=
p
to make a good connection. The very simple solution is to open the SX cas=
e,
unscrew the two screws holding the socket in place. Insert small rubber
O-rings between the support in the SX and the plate holding the expansion
port connector. Use longer screws if necessary to re-install the socket.
Raising the socket just the fraction of an inch by inserting the o-rings
is enough to insure a good connection.

Also, It has been documented that there are two different power supplies
for the SX64. One is a heavy duty supply that was originally meant for th=
e
never produced two drive portable. The other one is supposedly a lighter
power supply. I have heard of this one but have never run into an SX with
the lighter power supply. All I have had have worked fine with the REU on=
ce
the socket was raised.

Those who tell you their SX works fine with an REU probably bought one th=
at
a previous owner had made the small, unnoticeable mod too.

On your 1750 clone that will not work with the SX: Perhaps one of the
small changes in the ROM of the SX cause the clone a problem. Try
replacing the SX ROM with a standard ROM and see if that works.

The REU's power consumption has nothing to do with what works and doesn't=
 on the SX-64.  It has to do with
the timing of the computer/REU; which seems to vary.  I have 2 SX-64's an=
d I can't get the 1764, a 'newer'
1700, or the 1750 clone to work with them.  The only thing that worked wa=
s an old 1750 with a long ceramic
controller chip in it;  not the square plastic chip.

Oh really?

1) Have you ever seen the original commented source from Commodore?  I do=
n't think so, or you would
immediately see how close many of the comments are!  It sure did surprise=
 quite a few of the guys at CBM
at the time... other than the one who let it out!

2) First, I was told so by those same CBM guys.  Second, nowhere in the b=
ook will you find something
akin to "...the commented source code sections of this book have been rep=
rinted with permission from
Commodore Business Machines..."  Bottom line:  they took the stuff and ma=
de a few bucks; very few, I
guess, since I heard that Datamost screwed them over.

P.S. If you're interested on page 0001 of the source code (listing date: =
15:00 21 may 1982) it states:

  disk operating system and
  controller routines
  for the following cbm models:
    1541 serial disk
    with single sa390 drive
  copyright (c) 1981 by
  commodore business machines (cbm)

This is some of the only text that did not make it into their book!

     If you can get the generic number off the part itself, you've got a
shot. I would call Computer Component Source (CCS) @ 1-800-356-1227. Ther=
e
catalog lists several hundred monitor flybacks, but under generic numbers=
,
not model numbers. Yours just might be listed. There were several
manufacturers that made Commodore monitors, hence the confusion. If you
want to email me back with a number, I'd be glad to look it up for you.

It's a monochrome NTSC signal and it comes out of pin 7 of the 9 pin "D"
connector. Normally, that connector is used to feed a RGB color monitor,
but for those who don't have one, they can still use their 128 in 80
column mode. The quality really depends on the monitor you use. Not all
TV/monitors are equal, just as all video-only monitors are not equal.
Direct video is always better than going RF (channel 3 or 4) through a TV
tuner, but you're limited by the standard (NTSC) itself.

If you're speaking of RGB color mode, of course it looks better, but the
resolution is no greater. Trying to read fine print on a 1902 or 1084
gives me a headache. I don't like wordprocessing in the 80 column mode
with a color monitor. It's the same as the original IBM CGA mode. That's
why they went to EGA, then to VGA... more lines per inch and better
resolution.

You could do it that way, if you don't have a video monitor, or your TV
set has no direct video inputs. That offers the poorest resolution, and
the picture is usually noisy.

Of course not. TV sets, even top of the line, are only required to do
video. SVGA computer monitors can handle resolutions as high as 1024 line=
s
(and above) where the best that video can do is about 320 (broadcast
standard encoded NTSC). TV sets are not normally driven by computers.

Computer monitors made today don't do NTSC video. There are a few
multi-sync exceptions, but to achieve the extremely high resolution that
surpasses the TV video standard, you need a lot of memory in the driver
card and a fast computer to feed it. No manufacturer wants to look back.
Commodore stuff is closer to standard video than it is to present day
computer (SVGA and above) standards.

hi again
i recently downloaded novaterm 9.5 from somewhere in a .sfx format
and i cant get it to run
i have All 3 parts copied on to one disk and when i run part 1 it turns t=
o a
yellow screen and freezes up.
i am also having problems with other stuff i download i load it but it fr=
eezes
when i hit run
is it bad software??? i am also downloading commodore64 stuff in 128 mode=
 is
that bad???
how would i load that stuff up???
one more ques... will plus fpour stuff work on a commodore 128??

According to _Mapping the Commodore 64_ by Sheldon Leemon, the locations
53295-53311 are in the VIC-II chip, but are not actual memory. "When
read, they will always give a value of 255 ($FF). This value will not
change after writing to them."

Locations 53312-54271 are the VIC-II register images. You'd do better
asking a programmer what these are for.

Dennis:  First did you transfer the files in BINARY mode?
Second - there are archives that are not execuitable under CP/M.
i.e. .LBR, .LQR (squeezed LBR), .LZR ( crunched .LBR),
.LYR (LZH crunched .LBR), .PMA (PMA archive), .LZH/LHA
( -LH1- hopefully - if -LH5- must use PMA to dissolve), .ARC/ARK
(Same as DOS archive), .ZIP ( if it's not PKZip 1.10 or below
forget it under CP/M).

In short - almost all program files end with the extension of .COM

I own both MPS801 and a 1526... No, they are NOT the same. The 1526 has
only one addressable graphics character that has to be redefined for
every "card" - a very slow printing process.

As far as using the 1526 with Print Shop, etc. - it won't work. Unless
someone knows something I don't. Sorry.

The RREG stands for Read REGesters. This instruction returns the contents=
 of the
accumulator, x regester, y regester, and the status regester.

Try this: Type sys828. That jumps into the ml monitor and displays a brea=
k.

BREAK
    PC  SR AC XR YR SP

Nox type `x' to exit the ml monitor. Next use the RREG statement

RREG a,x,y,s

Last, type: print a,x,y,s

What a great idea!  Let's take it one step further.  How about a browser
that supports only Commodore Graphics!  The pages could still be setup th=
e
same way (i.e. http://www.yourplace.org/whatever].  Just that when a PC o=
r
MAC browser gets there, it would get gibberish while a true Commodore
Browser would get the full C/G graphics we've come to know and hoard. :)
