  43. The Translation Tables of GeoDOS allow it to be
  44. used for different fields of application:
  45. #    Converting between Text Programs.
  46. GEOS uses the Standard 7-Bit ASCII Code. Other
  47. C-64 text programs use either the PETSCII Format
  48. or a proprietary system. If you translate the text 
  49. 1:1 from one program to the other there is no
  50. guarantee that the text will be represented
  51. correctly. Example:
  52.     The GeoWrite Text:
  53.     `361"GeoDOS User Interface"`
  54.     copied 1:1 to PETSCII results in:`
  55.     `361"gEOdos uSER iNTERFACE"`
  56. The Upper and Lower-case letters are exchanged.
  57. This is only because of the different text formats.
  58. #    Output Text to Printer.
  59. Since the Commodore ASCII Character Set differs
  60. from the Character Set used by some printers it
  61. is possible to have similar translation faults
  62.  here
  63. as described above.
  64. In order to correct such translation faults GeoDOS
  65. uses its Translation Tables. These tables translate,
  66. for example, the "PETSCII" Character Set to the 
  67. "PC437" Character Set used in many Printers.
  68. When printing documents from GeoWrite this is
  69. achieved through the normal operation of the
  70. Printer Driver. Since GeoDOS uses its native print 
  71. routines, to also print data unchanged, you must
  72. select a Translation Table here.

  105. These three tables are used when text is supposed
  106. to be copied from PC-DOS to GeoWrite. German
  107. umlauts & special characters get comprehensively 
  108. adapted to the GEOS character set.

  113. These three tables are used when text is supposed
  114. to be copied from PC-DOS to standard Commodore.
  115. Umlauts are left unchanged as the normal PETSCII 
  116. Format does not support these. Special Characters, 
  117. e.g. characters for frames, are adapted to the
  118. Commodore Character Set if possible.

  121. This table is used if you copy text from PC-DOS to
  122. Mastertext format. The umlauts and special 
  123. characters are comprehensively adapted to the 
  124. Mastertext character set. For this operation you 
  125. should turn off the 'Ignore Linefeed' Option in the
  126. 'DOS ^ CBM' Parameter Menu.
  127. As a CBM Filetype you should select 'PRG'. You 
  128. must also rename the Source Files. Their names
  129. must be 16 Characters long and be terminated with 
  130. a 'k' for compressed Mastertext file. 
  131. Note: For technical reasons the first two characters
  132. of the PC-DOS file get lost.

  134. #    "PC437    >    Startexter"
  135. This table is used if you copy texts from PC-DOS
  136. to Startexter format. The umlauts and special 
  137. characters are comprehensively adapted to the
  138. Startexter Character Set. For this operation you
  139. should turn on the Option 'Ignore Linefeed' in the
  140. 'DOS ^ CBM' Parameter Menu.
  141. As a CBM Filetype you should choose 'PRG'.
  142. Note: Unfortunately, due to technical reasons, the
  143. first two characters of the PC-DOS file get lost.
  144. Now Run 'Startexter' and load the text. The text
  145. must subsequently, where appropriate, be re-
  146. formatted.

  171. Standard Commodore files to the PC-DOS format.
  172. Special Characters are comprehensively adapted  
  173. to the PC-DOS character set. You should turn on 
  174. the 'Insert Linefeed' option in the 'CBM ^ DOS' 
  175. Menu when using this function.

  178. This table is used if you copy MasterText files to
  179. the PC-DOS Format. The umlauts and special char-
  180. acters will be adapted to the PC-DOS character set.
  181. For this you should turn on the 'Insert Linefeed' 
  182. option in the 'CBM ^ DOS' parameter menu.
  183. GeoDOS can only copy the compressed MasterText
  184. files (identified by a "K" at the end of the file
  185. name). For technical reasons two characters are
  186. inserted at the start of the PC file. You can delete
  187. these characters later.

  190. This table is used if you copy Startexter files to
  191. the PC-DOS format. The umlauts and special char- 
  192. acters will be adapted to the PC-DOS character set.
  193. For this you should turn on the 'Insert Linefeed'
  194. option in the 'CBM ^ DOS' parameter menu.
  195. For technical reasons two characters are inserted
  196. at the start of the PC file. You can delete these
  197. characters later.

  199. #    "BTX    >    GEOS-ASCII"
  200. This table is used to copy BTX files (a German
  201. communications text format) to GeoWrite.
  202. BTX Control Characters (with no particular text
  203. formatting use) are filtered out of the BTX text.

  205. #    "GEOS-ASCII    >    BTX"
  206. This table is required if you would like to copy
  207. files from GeoWrite to BTX format. Note:
  208. Texts in GeoWrite should be written continuously.
  209. This means do not press <RETURN> at the end of
  210. a line. Despite that each line must be 40
  211. characters wide.
  212. To achieve that, open a new GeoWrite Document
  213. (V2.0), set the left edge at <12> (this value is the 
  214. default if you have created a new file) and set
  215. the value for the right edge at position <52>. Now
  216. you can write the text for the first line until you
  217. arrive at the end of the line. Pad the line to the
  218. right edge with blank spaces until the cursor  
  219. appears at the left edge again. Now you can enter
  220. the text for the next line. Pay attention to the
  221. max. number of lines. Using the BTX messaging
  222. service of the German Telekom this value is 18 
  223. lines/page.
  224. Note: BTX has been taken offline since GeoDOS was
  225. written. This information is provided here in the
  226. English documentation translation for the sake of
  227. continuity and to explain what these options 
  228. would be used for.
