  6.  ^^^^^^^^GOOD, BETTER, BEST!    
  7.      There is only one program in the
  8.  TI disk community that is (as my
  9.  5th-grade pupils would say) "totally
  10.  wicked awesome rad to a gnarly
  11.  degree."  I agree with the sentiment,
  12.  if not the mode of expression.
  13.      Nothing else in our world
  14.  computer community has equalled the
  15.  impact of the FUNNELWEB environment
  16.  created for us by Tony McGovern and
  17.  his son, Will.  These two Australian
  18.  geniuses (and I do not use the word
  19.  lightly) put together what all of us
  20.  deemed impossible for the TI.
  21.      FUNNELWEB just grew and grew.
  22.  The original American release was a
  23.  TI WRITER and EDITOR ASSEMBLER combo,
  24.  more or less (actually more).  Next
  25.  version a few months later contained
  26.  a bit more with lots of enhancements
  27.  of what went on before.  TIW, for
  28.  example, does not contain a ruler or
  29.  address recall or macro-key CAPS or
  30.  LC.  Tony put all these things in
  31.  fairly early versions, all of which
  32.  we take for granted in our word
  33.  processing activities.  The
  34.  environment always loaded by either
  35.  E/A or XB, thus making it ideal for
  36.  supercarts (again from earlier
  37.  versions) or RAMs or whatever device
  38.  hardwarers could devise. Then things
  39.  like Disk Manager 1000 and Diskpatch
  40.  were added and modified.  As were
  41.  loaders for c99, FORTH, etc.  Each
  42.  time Tony (primarily) would unravel
  43.  the complexities caused by these
  44.  needs and create new and better
  45.  solutions than dreamed possible.
  46.      When he came up with the
  47.  windowing effects for the CONFIG
  48.  program, for example, which
  49.  established aprofoundsystems
  50.  configuration (still able to be
  51.  porteden masseto any newer version,
  52.  I felt he had reached his peak.  Boy,
  53.  was I ever wrong.
  54.      FUNNELWEB is not a program. It is
  55.  an environment which gives you, the
  56.  user, some great computing tools in
  57.  such a complete package that it
  58.  becomes almost impossible to do
  59.  without them after using them.
  60.      Probably 80% or more of normal
  61.  (non-programmer) use of computers -
  62.  expecially the TI - is word
  63.  processing.  People need to
  64.  communicate.  FUNNELWEB turned TIW
  65.  into a great word processor, adding
  66.  so many features that should have
  67.  been in the original cart/disk combo
  68.  that when you go back to that combo
  69.  you are apalled at its limitations.
  70.  As I say, we have become spoiled by
  71.  Tony and take for granted what is
  72.  surely a remarkable achievement.
  73.      Much as I  my TI, I know that if
  74.  FUNNELWEB did not exist I would no
  75.  longer be TIing.  I couldn't.  FWB's
  76.  a structure equal to the best that
  77.  any home computer has to offer its
  78.  users at any price.
  79.      Let's face it.  It serves as a
  80.  Master DOS.  What does a Disk
  81.  Operating System do?  Well, it lets
  82.  you load up other programs,
  83.  primarily, or lets you handle some
  84.  disk management tasks.  FWB does all
  85.  that as a sideline.
  86.      With the new 4.31 FUNNELWEB the
  87.  console 99 disk user has just leaped
  88.  quantumly into an exciting era.  The
  89.  40-column (standard) TI computer fan
  90.  now has available to him or her a
  91.  package heretofore only available to
  92.  non-standard 80-col upgraders.
  93.      Before I go on, I'd like to say:
  94.      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^STOP!    
  95.      The bad news is this: Will went
  96.  over to the Amiga a long while ago,
  97.  and his father will be following
  98.  shortly.  This will mean that the
  99.  greatest single piece of software for
  100.  the TI will no longer grow; nor will
  101.  we be seeing any other pieces come
  102.  from Funnelweb Farm; nor will there
  103.  be any more great tutorials
  104.  (particularly those on exploring XB).
  105.  This is not only BAD news, it is
  106.  HORRIBLE news.  Not that I can blame
  107.  Tony.  Although close to 100% of all
  108.  TI disk users use FWB and its
  109.  upgrades, an extremely small number
  110.  has ever paid the author a penny -
  111.  and a tinier number, still, has ever
  112.  given a second contribution (though
  113.  the original to present upgrade is
  114.  similar to the difference between my
  115.  salary and Donald Trump's).  And a
  116.  tinier number, still, have ever
  117.  written to Tony to tell him how much
  118.  they use and appreciate FUNNELWEB and
  119.  all the other great things he has
  120.  done for us.
  121.      Remember, this is not
  122.  commercialware.  Fairware authors
  123.  need and deserve our support.
  124.  Fairware authors of the stature of
  125.  Tony McGovern have earned massive
  126.  support financially and socially.
  127.  They just don't get it.
  128.      I urge every user group to
  129.  "charge" a minimum $10 copying fee to
  130.  each member for this upgrade and send
  131.  the entire collected sum to Tony.
  132.  Send a group letter.  Write him up in
  133.  your newsletter.  Let's let '91 be
  134.  the Year of the McGovern. Even more,
  135.  I urge every single reader to sit
  136.  down at your first opportunity and
  137.  write (probably using FUNNELWEB) a
  138.  supporting letter, enclosing the
  139.  largest cash (certified check,
  140.  international coupon, money order)
  141.  contribution you can really afford.
  142.  It'll still be cheaper than anything
  143.  you'd have to pay for that would be
  144.  in the same league as FUNNELWEB (if
  145.  such a thing exists).  People
  146.  couldn't wait, for example, to shell
  147.  out $60 for PRESS (sight unseen) or
  148.  $25 to $60 for data bases.  Many of
  149.  our game cartridges cost at least
  150.  five times what some consider a
  151.  "fair" price to pay for the finest
  152.  piece of software ever for the TI.
  153.      How about this for a rule of
  154.  thumb?  Take the most expensive piece
  155.  of software you ever bought (and
  156.  probably don't even use anymore) and
  157.  double it.  Send that as a donation.
  158.  Remember what you paid in those
  159.  pre-inflationary days for LOGO and
  160.  MULTIPLAN and TI WRITER and DISK
  161.  MANAGER II and E/A and whatever?
  162.      Well, the new FUNNELWEB has so
  163.  many new features that most of those
  164.  expensive cartridges and upgrade
  165.  disks can be chucked in the basket.
  166.      What's your TI worth to you?
  167.  What'll it be worth to you down the
  168.  road with Tony McGovern gone?  Decide
  169.  soon about your commitment and make
  170.  the investment today in your future.

  172.      So what are a few of these
  173.  outstanding features?  Well, for one,
  174.  there is no more Disk Manager 1000
  175.  nor Disk Patch, because the new Disk
  176.  Review performs all the functions of
  177.  both (and then some) fromwithinthe
  178.  FWB environment, including COPYING
  179.  FILE BY FILE (to eliminate fractures)
  180.  WHOLE DISKS TO MULTIPLE DRIVES! So
  181.  stick a disk in Drive 1 and copy to
  182.  Drives 2, 3, AND 4, while you go comb
  183.  your wallaby.  Disks can be FORMATted
  184.  to Quad density, if you have the
  185.  right controller.  Any program can be
  186.  RUN right out of DR, including the
  187.  huge IV254s.  The Quick Directory
  188.  now lets you mark a file from WITHIN
  189.  the FORMATter or ASSEMBLER.  And the
  190.  disk editing functions are plentiful
  191.  and profound.
  192.      The whole FUNNELWEB 4.31
  193.  environment is profound.  You'll
  194.  realize this immediately when you see
  195.  BOTH central menus displayed on the
  196.  screen simultaneously and you just
  197.  have to move the cursor around to
  198.  either RUN the program (or VIEW
  199.  and/or PRINT the text file).
  200.      This is amustfor eveyone!
  201.      Get it from your user group
  202.  today, being aware that everything
  203.  worthwhile in life costs.
