If an egg is fertilised by an X-carrying sperm, then the baby will be a girl. If the egg is fertilised by a Y-carrying sperm, then the baby will be a boy. Men produce roughly equal numbers of X and Y sperm, so the chance of a boy or girl being born are about equal in the population as a whole.
