The spine or backbone is made up of 26 bones called vertebrae. Some of the vertebrae are joined together.
Others are separated by small disk shaped pieces of cartilage that act as shock absorbers to protect your spine from damage when you are running or jumping.
Vertebrae have a hole through the middle which contains and protects the spinal cord.
