  4. The razing of a mosque ignites riots that pose the worst crisis
  5. since 1947

  8.     They called it Kar Seva (Holy Work), but the consequences
  9. were devilish. To the sounds of conch shells and clashing
  10. cymbals, a mob of Hindu fanatics wielding pickaxes, crowbars and
  11. bare hands descended upon the Babri mosque in the northern town
  12. of Ayodhya and razed it. Never mind that the Supreme Court of
  13. India, eager to preserve the nation as a secular state in which
  14. all religions are respected, had ordered that the mosque be left
  15. alone. The existence of the mosque, built by a nobleman of a
  16. Mughal Emperor in 1528 on the spot where the Hindu god Rama is
  17. said to have been born thousands of years earlier, was deemed an
  18. insult by many Hindus, egged on by politicians eager to convert
  19. fervent faith into political power.

  21.     But the destruction equally enraged Muslims -- roughly 12%
  22. of India's population of 870 million -- and ignited the gravest
  23. crisis in India since the religious massacres that followed
  24. independence in 1947. Muslim and Hindu mobs armed with knives,
  25. hatchets and fire bombs attacked each other's houses of
  26. worship, homes and people in Bombay, Calcutta and other cities.
  27. A semiofficial death count topped 1,000, though the true toll
  28. was believed to be much higher. Muslim mobs burned Hindu temples
  29. and homes in the neighboring, predominantly Islamic countries
  30. of Pakistan and Bangladesh; more than 30 people were killed in
  31. Pakistan. Even in far-off Britain, 12 Hindu temples were
  32. torched.

  34.     India's Parliament met but could conduct no business;
  35. legislators only banged their desks and screamed insults at one
  36. another. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao came under heavy fire
  37. for indecisiveness and overly conciliatory gestures toward
  38. extremists. In response, he ordered the arrest of two senior
  39. leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, a Hindu nationalist group
  40. that has become the second largest political organization in
  41. India, on charges of inciting violence. If convicted, they could
  42. be imprisoned for 11 years. Rao also banned three Hindu
  43. organizations and two fundamentalist Muslim ones and at the same
  44. time promised Muslims that his government would help rebuild the
  45. Ayodhya mosque -- moves that some Hindu leaders warned might
  46. spark more resentment and violence. At week's end army troops
  47. were slowly bringing the violence under control. But the
  48. long-run survival of secularism and tolerance in the world's
  49. most populous democracy was by no means assured.
