  11.     (Collins; $45). On May 20, 1992, 75 photographers invaded
  12. Movietown for 24 hours. They emerged with a revealing album of
  13. stars and wannabees: tots holding their 8-by-10 glossies;
  14. Harrison Ford, burned out from too many interviews; Hugh Hefner
  15. coming to the door accompanied by a Doberman. Hollywood has
  16. never looked so energetic, wealthy or anxious.

  18.     THE UBIQUITOUS PIG

  21. this work whimsically demonstrates, porkers are everywhere, from
  22. OvidUs verses to Miss Piggy's flirtations; from cartoons to
  23. medical labs, where cross-species organ transplants led
  24. scientists to observe, "Man is more nearly like the pig than
  25. the pig wants to admit."

  30. House; $85). History unfurls like the tricolore in this opulent
  31. work tracing Bonaparte's 14 years of supremacy. Within that
  32. astonishingly brief period, the little Corsican won wars and
  33. women, revised laws and set a style still echoing in EuropeUs
  34. corridors of power.

  36.     THE BRANCACCI CHAPEL

  38.     By Umberto Baldini and Ornella Casazza (Abrams; $125). Now,
  39. after years of dedicated labor, the frescoes in the Florentine
  40. chapel look as they did in the Renaissance. The biblical figures
  41. painted by Masaccio, Masolino and Filippino Lippi glow anew in
  42. this testament to religious faith, artistic genius and
  43. scientific restoration.

  48. $18.95). According to the Balinese, their religion is
  49. monotheistic; but their God "takes as many forms as the sun has
  50. rays." The most dramatic of those forms are here, along with
  51. scores of other stark, comic or beautiful masks. Each is
  52. exquisitely carved; all express the yearning of an ancient and
  53. still dynamic culture.

  58. fellow painter: "Monet is only an eye." Perhaps, but with that
  59. organ the great Impressionist analyzed the effects of sunlight
  60. on cathedrals and haystacks and water lilies -- and altered our
  61. perceptions forever. A scholarly appreciation reveals why and
  62. how.

  67. years a Belgian photographer-writer lived and traveled with the
  68. last nomads of Africa -- the Tuareg, Bororo and Danakil tribes.
  69. His diverting account shows many things these supposedly
  70. primitive wanderers have to teach the outsider about family
  71. values.

  76. liner went down on its maiden voyage in 1912, its story had
  77. scarcely begun. The entire epic is here, from the fatal
  78. encounter with an iceberg to the discovery of the sunken wreck
  79. in 1989. Ken Marschall's paintings imagine the past in careful,
  80. chilling detail.

  85. Rome, the Muslim conquest, the age of Christian Kings, the
  86. Napoleonic era, the modern epoch -- Spanish style is long and
  87. wide enough to embrace all periods. This landmark book covers
  88. every significant design. Its descriptions are brief, but
  89. Roberto Schezen's photographs speak volumes.
