  6.     Coming in from the cold got too hot for Edward Lee Howard,
  7. the CIA's only known cold-war defector to the KGB. After a short
  8. interlude in Stockholm, during which Swedish authorities
  9. considered whether he had spied against their government, Howard
  10. scurried back to Russia. "He's safe in Moscow," said Howard's
  11. lawyer. U.S. Department of Justice officials, frustrated because
  12. espionage is not included in the U.S.-Swedish extradition
  13. treaty, vowed in a statement "to bring Howard to trial no matter
  14. how long it may take."

  19.     The House banking scandal has claimed another victim. Mickey
  20. Edwards, the fourth-ranking House Republican, went down in a
  21. five-way primary race in Oklahoma. Edwards, who bounced 386
  22. checks at the House bank, finished third with only 26% of the
  23. vote. In a concession speech, the eight-term Congressman blamed
  24. the anti-incumbency mood among voters for his loss. Said
  25. Edwards: "They saw some new faces out there, and they're not
  26. real happy with what's happening in Washington."
