MILESTONES, Page 27
DIED. Albert Pierrepoint, 87, Britain's best-known hangman,
who dispatched 433 men and 17 women in a 25-year career; in
Southport, England. Pierrepoint, whose father and uncle were
public executioners, hanged World War II traitor William Joyce,
known as Lord Haw Haw, and Ruth Ellis, the last woman executed
in Britain. He defended the noose as humane and quick (11 sec.
when done properly), but when he retired in 1956 (soon after
Ellis' hanging) he became a vigorous opponent of capital
punishment.
