  4. Three bold spacewalkers manhandle a wayward satellite

  7.     Imagine trying to seize an elephant that is spinning overhead
  8. by grabbing onto three makeshift handholds the size of soup cans.
  9. Then consider performing this feat swaddled in a 255-lb. rubber
  10. suit, suspended in midair, with no net. It was a comparable
  11. challenge that confronted the Endeavour astronauts last week
  12. when they rescued Intelsat, a 4.5-ton 17-ft.-long
  13. telecommunications satellite, from its useless orbit 230 miles
  14. above the earth. In a record 8-hr. 29-min. space walk, with the
  15. world rolling by beneath them, Commander Pierre Thuot, Richard
  16. Hieb and Lieut. Colonel Thomas Akers wrestled the satellite into
  17. the shuttle's cargo bay and attached a rocket booster that would
  18. enable it to achieve its proper orbit 22,300 miles high.

  20.      Two previous attempts to reel in Intelsat with a
  21. spring-loaded capture bar had failed. Each time Commander Thuot
  22. tried to hook his target, the satellite just bounced away. After
  23. a day's reflection, the shuttle crew thought of a way to steady
  24. the satellite and allow attachment of the bar. The bold proposal
  25. involved an unprecedented trio of astronauts working together
  26. in the unforgiving vacuum of space. If Thuot, Hieb and Akers had
  27. not coordinated their actions exactly, they could have set the
  28. satellite wobbling so hard it might have crashed into the
  29. orbiter. Had either end of the capture bar hit one of the
  30. thrusters on Intelsat's rim, the resulting explosion of rocket
  31. fuel could have ripped through the men's space suits.

  33.      The bulk of the pressurized suits makes physical activity
  34. extremely awkward and quickly exhausting. Astronauts have found
  35. that their hands chafe sorely, particularly the fingertips,
  36. which can be rubbed so raw that the deltas, whorls and ridges
  37. of their fingerprints disappear. But the Endeavour crew
  38. accomplished its spectacular mission and, just for the record,
  39. completed a fourth jaunt in space before preparing for their
  40. scheduled return home.
