  7. 49   INT. WARDROOM

  9.     Later. A party for the high-ranking Cardassians is in
  10.     full swing. The officers are drinking and laughing
  11.     with some of the Bajoran comfort women. Most of the
  12.     women are doing their best to be accommodating; they
  13.     know that to resist the drunken kisses and the
  14.     wandering hands is to invite severe punishment.
  15.  
  16.     CAMERA COMES TO REST on Kira and Meru, who stand in a 
  17.     corner looking at the activities swirling around them. 
  18.     Kira clutches a bottle of kanar; it's uncertain if she 
  19.     intends to pour drinks or clobber the first Cardassian 
  20.     to come within range.
  21.  
  22.     Meru, though distressed by what she's witnessing, keeps 
  23.     looking down at her elegant clothes, smiling.
  24.  
  25.                     KIRA
  26.             Would you mind telling me what 
  27.             you're smiling about?
  28.  
  29.                     MERU 
  30.             The Prophets. I never realized 
  31.             they had such a sense of humor. 
  32.             When I was a child, I would dream 
  33.             of having enough food to eat and 
  34.             pretty clothes to wear.
  35.                 (looking down at herself) 
  36.             And now, look at me... I have 
  37.             everything I ever wanted...
  38.                 (smiling at the irony)
  39.             ... and I feel horrible.

  41.     Kira smiles.

  44.             It is kind of funny... in a 
  45.             horrible sort of way.

  47.                     MERU 
  48.             I suppose if I can survive 
  49.             starvation, I can survive this...

  51.     Kira looks at her mother with newfound respect.
