  6.     Kira closes her eyes for a moment, tries to keep the 
  7.     pain of loss from overwhelming her.
  8.  
  9.                     KIRA 
  10.             Did they die quickly?
  11.  
  12.                     BASHIR
  13.  
  14.             Instantly.
  15.  
  16.     Kira reaches up and takes the earring from her ear and 
  17.     looks at it. There's nothing more for Bashir to say 
  18.     and he doesn't even try. After a beat, Odo ENTERS from 
  19.     the Infirmary.

  21.                     ODO
  22.             Doctor, may I... ?
  23.  
  24.     Bashir nods and waves him in. Odo comes over to Kira 
  25.     as Bashir EXITS to give them a moment alone. She 
  26.     stares down at the earring in her hand.
  27.  
  28.                     KIRA 
  29.             I was thirteen when I joined the 
  30.             Resistance. I'd been hanging 
  31.             around the Shakaar base camp for 
  32.             a few weeks, running errands, 
  33.             cleaning weapons, that kind of 
  34.             thing.
  35.                 (beat)
  36.             One night they had an ambush 
  37.             planned, but they were a man 
  38.             short. I volunteered to go, but 
  39.             everyone said I was too young, too 
  40.             small. But Lupaza stuck up for 
  41.             me... said I had the heart of a 
  42.             sinoraptor and this was no time to 
  43.             be choosy.
  44.                 (beat)
  45.             Furel made some joke... I don't 
  46.             remember what it was, but I 
  47.             remember Lupaza hitting him -- she 
  48.             always did that. They loved each 
  49.             other in a way. But it was up to 
  50.             Shakaar, and he stared at me for
  51.             a long time before deciding that 
  52.             maybe I was big enough to carry 
  53.             a phaser rifle after all.
  54.                 (beat)
  55.             So that night, we set up an ambush 
  56.             on the ridgeline and waited. It 
  57.             was cold and my hands kept 
  58.             shaking.
